William R. Tauzel

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — William Robert Tauzel Jr., of Montgomery, Ala., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Drake Whitelaw officiating.

Burial will be in Cobleskill, N.Y., at a later date.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel having served 25 years. During his tours of duty he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Longevity Service Award with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After a distinguished and honorable career in the Air Force, Mr. Tauzel pursued a successful career in finance as a certified financial planner with A.G. Edwards & Sons and with H&R Block, until his retirement in 1998.

William R. Tauzel Jr. was a graduate of Georgia Technological University with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He also received a master's degree in computer science from  Texas A&M University.

He is survived by his mother, Esther C. Tauzel of Scotia, N.Y.; two brothers, David F. Tauzel and his wife Jane of Port Orange, Fla., and J. Richard Tauzel of Schenectady, N.Y.; his three daughters, Suzanne T. Zetty of Stafford, Va., Jean Marie Tauzel of Woodland Hills,  Calif., and Karen T. Efthemes and her husband Gregory of Henderson, Nev.; and four grandchildren, Lane Zetty, Jennifer Zetty, Christine Efthemes, and Kyle Efthemes.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, 2911 Woodley Road, Montgomery, AL 36111, (334) 281-1337.

Robert E. Boehning

STAMFORD — Robert E. Boehning, 75, closed his beautiful blue eyes on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, after a long fight with cancer.

He was a resident of Gilboa and former resident of Hauppauge, Long Island.

He served in the Army during World War II and was a 38-year employee of Grumman Aerospace.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen (Ginger) nee Cremmins; two sons, Robert and his wife Jan, and Timothy and his wife, Tammy; two daughters, Deborah Ann Boehning and Kathleen Boehning; a brother, Richard; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions may be made in his name to Catskill Area Hospice, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Lawrence Charles officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home under the direction of William A. Tari.

Emma S. Chase

COOPERSTOWN — Mrs. Emma S. Chase, 93, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Chenango Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 25, 1908, in East Meredith, N.Y., the daughter of Walter and Lela (Burdick) Smith,

Emma graduated from high school in the local area and then graduated from the Oneonta Normal School in 1928. She taught in several schools in New York and Long Island for about five years. She married Charles Ramon Chase on Aug. 26, 1933. They enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage until his death on Jan. 18, 1993.

She was active in many organizations during her lifetime, including the Christian Hill, Pomona and national granges, Otsego County Cooperative Extension, local 4-H, Christ Church in Cooperstown, St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta where she taught Sunday school for many years, Hartwick Historical Society and senior citizens groups in Hartwick and Mount Vision.

Emma enjoyed sewing, needlework, reading, traveling and doing puzzles.

Mrs. Chase is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Bartolo Natoli of Norwich and Florida; a daughter-in-law, Carol Butts of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren, Sharon Sommer of  White Plains, John Natoli of Norwich, Thomas Natoli of Binghamton, Steven Natoli of Clifton Park, Patricia Reynolds of Fly Creek, Kathleen Chase of Cooperstown and Michael Chase of Cooperstown; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, Donald W. Chase, who died June 20, 1971, and a brother, Howard Smith in 1997.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home in Cooperstown with the Rev. Douglas C. Smith, rector of Christ Church in Cooperstown, officiating.

Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. until service time when the family will be in attendance. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions may be made to the Chenango Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility in Norwich, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Terry A. Gale

MONROE, N.C. — Terry Allen Gale, 55, of Monroe N.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001.

Services were held Friday at Evergreen Cemetery, in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Gale was born on March 15, 1946, in Oneonta, N.Y. to Laura Gale Nelson and the late George Gale.

His survivors include his wife of more than 35 years Carol Gale of Monroe; sons, Brett A. Gale of Monroe, and Chad A. Gale of Matthews, N.C.; daughter, Carla L. Belk of Indian Trail, N.C.; his mother Laura Gale Nelson of Oneonta; brothers Gordon Gale, Ron Gale, and Tom Gale; and five grandchildren.

Muriel Tilyou

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Muriel (Oakley) Tilyou, of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away at her home on Nov. 29, 2001, at the age of 75.

Muriel had been ill for several years due to a stroke. She was born in Saugerties, N.Y. on March 9, 1926. Muriel married Vivan Tilyou in 1979.

She worked as a housekeeper at Stamford Community Hospital for many years before retiring and moving to Florida.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane (Oakley, Terry) Rasi and son-in-law Thomas; grandchildren Timothy and Tami Terry, of Cape Coral Fla.; her son, Michael Oakley and daughter-in-law Sharon, of Howard,  Colo.; grandchildren Mike Oakley, an MP in the Army stationed in the Middle East, and Brett and Yvonne Leven; great-grandchildren Joshua, Lindsay, Tyler and Reese, of Leesburg, Va., and Rick and Nancy Lutz; great grandchildren Coty, Sierra, and Stone Tanor of Forestport, N.Y.; her sister Rita; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Vivan Tilyou, and 10 brothers and sisters.

Private services were held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the home of Diane and Tom Rasi.

Burial will be in June of 2002 in Stamford, N.Y.

Helen O. Oliver

COOPERSTOWN — Helen O. Oliver was taken to be with her Lord on Dec. 15, 2001, at The Meadows, where she had resided for many years.

Helen was born on Dec. 8, 1916.

Helen was married to Harold G. Oliver, who predeceased her on Dec. 14, 1974.

Her parents, DeEtta, and William C. Osier, a brother, William Osier, and a son-in-law, Gerald Horth, also predeceased Helen.

Helen is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Madolyn Palmer, Mrs. Patricia Foster, Mrs. Janet Horth and Mrs. Betty Hooks; her two sons-in-law, Carver Palmer and Donald Hooks; and grandchildren, Randy Palmer, Sandra Rudebush, Carla Balnis, Cecelia Britton, Chester McAdams, Douglas McAdams, Gregory Horth, Julie Breitmaier, Wendy Horth, Donna McLean and James Hooks; and nephews, William Osier and James Osier.

Helen leaves behind many friends and co-workers from the national Boy Scouts organization, where she spent 28 years working as bookkeeper. Helen was extremely proud of her job and her years of service to this worthwhile organization.

Helen lived several years at Nader Towers and counted these people as her closest friends, especially Eva Hunt and Murial Jeffery, her neighbors.

Helen graduated from Worcester Central School and Albany Business College.

She attended Worcester United Methodist Church for most of her early life, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneonta until her death.

Helen worked for several years at Elmore Milling as a bookkeeper, and also at the Oneonta Grocery Co. She and her husband for many years owned and operated a gas station and small store at the foot of Franklin Mountain. From this business came a lifetime of friends for both of them. After her retirement, she worked part-time in the business office of the Oneonta City School District.

Helen was an active member of the DAR of Oneonta, and will be remembered by many people she assisted while serving as genealogist for many years. There was no challenge too great for her, and she assisted many families in tracing their history.

During her retirement she took up painting, and was very proud to have a painting displayed in the old Key Bank for several months.

Helen was a warm and giving person, and remaining friends will cherish her memory.

Her four daughters will always be extremely grateful that she came into their lives. Helen was a warm and loving mother and grandmother. They wish to express their gratitude to The Meadows, where Helen received the love and care of wonderful staff for many years. They were also her family.

Services will be at the Bookhout Funeral Home on Main Street in Oneonta at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, with the Rev. William B. Bouton, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

There will be no viewing, and burial will be in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at a date to be determined in the spring, by her daughters.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Otschodela Council of the Boy Scouts of America, or a charity of your choice.

David Carley

STAMFORD — David George Carley, 56, of Stamford, died Dec. 14, 2001, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born Sept. 18, 1945, in Delhi, the son of Harold and Clara (Getman) Carley.

He graduated from Ithaca High School and was a 1967 graduate of Cornell University, Ithaca.

David was a Vietnam veteran, serving from 1967-1970.

From 1977 until the present, Mr. Carley was CEO of Catskill Craftsmen in Stamford.

In 1967, he and Marilyn (Johnson) Carley were married.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, at home; two daughters, Heather (Michael) Walts of Grand Gorge and Melissa Carley of Fayetteville; a grandson, Gwilym Walts of Grand Gorge; a brother, H. Edwin Carley, Colorado Springs,  Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford with the Rev. Tracie E. Martin officiating. An hour prior to the service and following the service, the family will meet friends at the church.

Burial will be in Stamford Cemetery.

Donations in his memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, Stamford, or Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County - 4-H, Route 10, Hamden, NY 13782.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Dorothy A. Smith

TODDSVILLE — Mrs. Dorothy A. Smith, 75, of Toddsville died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2001, at The Meadows.

Dorothy was born on Jan. 20, 1926, in Westford, a daughter of Harry and Lucy (Pratt) Roseboom.

She married Richard F. Smith on May 21, 1943, in Milford. Mr. Smith died in 1976.

Dorothy attended schools in Westville and Milford, and then devoted her life to raising her family.

Throughout her life, she was also employed as a waitress and cook for both the Short Stop Restaurant on Main Street in Cooperstown and the Hyde Park Diner. For more than 21 years, she was associated with the Cooperstown Diner on Main Street.

In the early 1970s, she moved to LaFayette, and was employed at the LaFayette Diner in Tully, until she retired in 1982, and returned to the Cooperstown area.

An avid card player, Dorothy enjoyed her Solitaire games as well as bird watching and crossword puzzles.

She was of the Christian faith.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter and four sons: Grace Snyder of Hartwick, Richard F. Smith Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Oaksville, Eugene Smith and his wife, Lois, of Toddsville, Ronald Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Oppenheim, and Charles Smith and his wife, Linda, of Cedarville; an adopted daughter, Rose Wikoff of Mount Vision; two sisters and two brothers, Mary Broas and her husband, Edward, of Montgomery, Bernice Bachanas and her husband, Norm, of Fly Creek, F. Arthur Roseboom and his wife, Ida, of Westville and Donald Roseboom and his wife, Alice, of Toddsville; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends in Cooperstown, LaFayette and Tully.

She is predeceased by three sisters, Grace Roseboom, Bertha Teachout and Rena Short; and five brothers, Paul, Robert, Stanley, Freeman and Leon Roseboom.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown, with Ronald Smith of the Jehovah's Witnesses and son of the deceased, officiating.

Burial will be in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to the Fly Creek First Responders, P.O. Box 41, Fly Creek, NY 13337 or the Cooperstown Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 322, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.

Fannie D. Ireland

WEST WINFIELD — Fannie D. Ireland of 265 Skaneateles Turnpike, West Winfield, passed away at The Meadows in Cooperstown on Dec. 14, 2001.

She was born Nov. 10, 1909, in Coventry, daughter of Oriel and Mabel Barnett Dalton.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Croswell D. and Jane Ireland; four loving granddaughters, Orilee and Tom Ireland-Delfs, Karen and Peter Toth, Susan Ireland and Rebecca and Jeff Perry. Also, seven special great-grandchildren, Brigid, Ingrid, Martha, Mary, Allen, Emaleigh and Evan. She is also survived by sisters, Winifred Lord and Verna Carlson.

She was predeceased by her husband, Croswell W.; sisters, Viola and Shirley; and brothers, Hilton and Wesley.

Services were private.

Arrangements in care of Wilcox-Dimbleby Funeral Home, West Winfield.

Paul B. Hunt

ONEONTA — Paul B. Hunt, 31, of Oneonta, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 13, 1970, in Margaretville, the son of Robert and Virginia (Fulton) Hunt.

Paul was a 1989 graduate of Oneonta High School.

He worked at the Clark Foundation Fernleigh Greenhouse in Cooperstown.

Paul collected World War II model airplanes. He loved going four-wheeling in his Jeep, but most of all he loved spending time with his son, Jared.

Paul is survived by his parents, Robert and Virginia Hunt, of Oneonta; his son, Jared Hunt, of Unadilla; his sister, Cheryl Hinkley, of Roxbury; his brother, J. Vance Hunt, of Oneonta; his maternal grandmother, Irma Fulton, of Kenoza Lake; his niece, Kendra Hinkley of Roxbury; his nephew, Erick Hinkley of Roxbury; his very special friend Donna of Fly Creek; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Rodney Johnson, pastor of the Emmons Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will follow at the Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin.

The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today for those who wish to call.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Emmons Methodist Church, or to the charity of one's choice in loving memory of Paul B. Hunt.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Brett A. Oliver

LATHAM — Brett A. Oliver, 30, of New Loudon Road, died suddenly on Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas, while on a vacation cruise. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Born in Stamford on Nov. 11, 1971, he is the son of William D. Oliver of Latham and Gloria Lighte Oliver of Mechanicville.

Mr. Oliver was a 1989 graduate of Shaker High School, and he also attended Hudson Valley Community College.

Mr. Oliver was a construction laborer with Allied Craftsman Construction Co. of Schenectady.

Brett enjoyed life; motorcycling and playing golf were among his passions.

Survivors in addition to his parents include his brother, Chad Oliver, of Latham; a sister, Victoria Walsh, of Loudonville; his maternal grandmother, Helen Lighte, of Stamford; his nephew Shaun Morey; and his dear friend Mona Sallen of Clifton Park; along with several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were at 6 p.m. Sunday at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Calling hours were at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.

Burial will be in Stamford Cemetery at 11 a.m. today.

In loving memory of Brett, his family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.
