Frederick A. Puritz

ONEONTA — Frederick Alan Puritz died Tuesday after a long and courageous battle with cancer. His death came peacefully, at home, in the presence of the family he loved so well. He was 53.

Fred was deeply loved as a husband, father, son, uncle, brother and friend. Easy going, sharp of mind and wit, extremely thoughtful of others and a lot of fun to be around, he was also a first -class athlete, an excellent teacher and a keenly competitive poker player. He loved books and movies, "The Godfather" and Tiger Woods, watching stock prices and eating bagels with lox. His love and companionship, his laughter, his good nature and good company, his advice and counsel and comfort, will be sorely missed by all of those who knew him and relied on him.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1948, in Larchmont, N.Y., the son of Edward and Cynthia Puritz. He married Roberta Williams on Aug. 26, 1973. His greatest pride and deepest affection were reserved for his wife and three children. It is therefore a blessing that Fred lived to see his son Nathan graduate last spring from Bentley College in Boston, and to see his twins James and Sarah graduate last spring from Oneonta High School and start their own college careers this fall.

In high school in Mamaroneck, Fred excelled at football, basketball and track and field. His love for golf and tennis began then and continued throughout his life. He attended the University of  Pennsylvania, earning his bachelor's of science in economics from the Wharton School of Business, following with an MBA from Harvard Business School and a second master's in economics from SUNY Binghamton. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After several years as an accountant and financial consultant for Booz, Allen, Hamilton and for Arthur Andersen, he and Robbie moved to Oneonta in 1980, where he remained, teaching business at SUNY College at Oneonta, raising his children and acting as loving partner and help to Roberta.

At SUCO, he taught a dozen business courses of all shapes and kinds, bringing to each his own style of insight, anecdote, knowledge and skill. He was a popular and sought after lecturer and gave freely of his time to union activities, where he was treasurer; athletic affairs, where he was chair of the Intercollegiate Athletic Board; and student activities, where he was adviser to the Investment Club. He authored several scholarly papers and educational texts. He was a member of Temple Beth El in Oneonta and the Men's Club there. Fred was busy in community activities, was interested in political goings-on, supported local theater and dance, and was a frequent and enthusiastic fan of Yellowjacket athletics, especially (but not exclusively) when he could root for his kids on the playing field.

Fred is survived by his wife, Roberta, and children Nathan, James and Sarah, mentioned above; his father, Edward Puritz of Schenevus; his brother James Puritz of Orlando, Fla.; his brother Andrew Puritz of Oneonta; and many beloved nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, aunts and uncles, all of whom, like Fred's many friends, will remember him with love, fondness and affection.

Contributions in Fred's memory may be made to any of the organizations and groups that were important to Fred during his life, or those which made such wonderful efforts on his behalf during his illness, such as Temple Beth El in Oneonta, SUNY College at Oneonta, A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Louis Busch Hager Cancer Center at M.I. Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown and Catskill Area Hospice.

There are no calling hours.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Temple Beth El, 83 Chestnut St., Oneonta, with Rabbi Donald Neil Roberts officiating.

Burial will follow in Temple Beth El Cemetery, Emmons, N.Y.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

LANCASTER, Pa. — Susan Mount Whitney, grandmother of six and a gifted teacher, died on Jan. 11, 2002, after a brief hospitalization in Lancaster, Pa. She was 60.

Susan Whitney was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Mount on Aug. 20, 1941. She grew up in Suffern and graduated in 1963 from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., where she majored in psychology, prepared for a career in elementary education, and served as senior class president.

For more than 20 years, Susan lived in Delaware County, where she taught elementary school in Treadwell. There she developed innovative systems of teaching arithmetic and reading and was a cherished teacher. A lifelong Episcopalian, Susan quietly radiated a deep and sustaining faith. Throughout her life she was active in several Episcopalian churches including St. Paul's Church in Franklin and St. Mark's in North Palm Beach, Fla.

Although she faced major health challenges throughout her life, she refused to allow illness to define her; rather, she used her own courage and wisdom to inspire and support others. In November 2001, she published an article describing her childhood experience with polio and her increasing awareness of the effects of post-polio syndrome.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents Wilbur and Eleanor Mount, and by her granddaughter  Taylor R. Nelson.
