Walter F. Simonds

SCHUYLER LAKE — Walter F. Simonds, age 82, of County Highway No. 22, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2002, in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.

He was born on March 17, 1920, in the town of Exeter, son of the late Ralph L. and Leona Higbie Simonds.

Walter was raised and educated in Exeter.

On Aug. 18, 1962, he married the former Marjorie Coger in Cooperstown.

For 35 years he was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Schuyler Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Marjorie; one son, Jeffery Simonds of Pittston, Pa.; two stepsons, Robert Charles Coe of Schuyler Lake and James V. and his wife, Cindy Coe of Richfield Springs; one stepdaughter, Carla and her husband, Frederick Eckler of Richfield Springs; two brothers, Ralph Simonds of Sacramento,  Calif., and Lyman Simonds of Floyd; three sisters, Pauline Cleary of Schuyler Lake, Madeline Wallace of South Daytona, Fla., and Minerva Stickles of Oneonta; four grandchildren, Darren and his wife, Lisa Eckler of Clifton Park, Jason and Eric Coe of Fly Creek, Robert Coe III of Schuyler Lake; one great-grandson, Jared Eckler of Clifton Park; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Deleban and Damon Simonds.

Funeral service and interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Schuyler Lake First Responders or the Richfield Springs Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.

Ora M. Busch

NEW BERLIN — Ora M. Busch, 83 years, of New Berlin, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2002, in New Berlin.

She was born April 12, 1918, in Pittsfield, the daughter of Albert and Mae (Truax) Gould.

She married Edmund L. Busch on April 18, 1937, in Sherburne. He survives.

She spent her childhood in the New Berlin and Pittsfield areas.

She was a graduate of New Berlin Central School.

She was a licensed practical nurse family care provider in Pittsfield.

She was active in various organizations including the New Berlin Fire Auxiliary, and after moving to Pittsfield, she joined the auxiliary there.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, where she was a Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Brownrigg, Burlington Flats, Anita Taft, Rochester, Aleta Dunham, South New Berlin, and Janet Griffiths, Leonardsville; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers and one sister, Frank and Andrew Gould and Pearl Walkden.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 22, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, with the Rev. Beverly Butler of the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, officiating.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 21, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Emergency Squad, New Berlin, or the First United Methodist Church, New Berlin, NY 13411.

Walter E. Armstrong

ANDES — Walter Emory Armstrong, 79, of Andes, who served as trustee and longtime mayor of Andes, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, March 16, 2002, at O'Connor Hospital, Delhi.

He was born in Andes on Dec. 18, 1922, the son of Emory and Estelle (Sanford) Armstrong.

He married Irene Devine on Nov. 19, 1952.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.

He was a longtime resident of Sea Cliff, Long Island, where he and Irene raised their five sons. Walter and Irene moved back to Andes in 1983, where he worked at Andes Central School until retiring.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; sons, Michael of Halifax, Va., Richard and wife, Isabel, of Long Island, James and wife, Kathleen, of Bovina Center, Patrick and wife, Janice, of Andes, and Robert of Andes. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Lauren, Sarah, Bradley, Caren, Steven, Kevin, Julie, Jenny, Rebecca, Katie, Curt and wife, Hope, Jeff, Dillon, Robin, Matthew and Walter; and his great-grandchild, Olen.

He was recently predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Diane of Halifax, Va.; two sisters, Marie McFrederick and Dorothy Holloway.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Andes Emergency Squad.

Friends may call at the Jester-Stanley Funeral Home, Andes, on Friday, March 22, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m.

There will be a memorial service held at the Andes Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 23, 2002, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Daniel McCollister officiating.

Charlotte Hanvey

OTEGO — Charlotte Hanvey, 84, of Otego, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, unexpectedly.

She was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Pepacton, the daughter of Albert D. and Martha (Paul) Young.

She married Lyle (Pat) Hanvey in Gilbertsville on April 18, 1937. He predeceased her Oct. 18, 1967.

She was a housewife, having worked during World War II at Scintilla in Sidney.

She has been a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the River Street Baptist Church and the Laurens American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Janet Hanvey of Otego; two sisters, Marion and her husband, James, Holcomb of Oneonta and Bernice Kane of Schenevus; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also predeceased by a brother, Gerald Young; and a sister, Dorothy Hendricks.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Mel Farmer, pastor of the River Street Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be later in Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Funeral arrangements are by Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Nelson F. Hatch

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Mr. Nelson F. Hatch, age 92, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.

He had been a resident of the St. Johnsville Nursing Home for nearly a year.

He was born Aug. 7, 1909, in Peakville, the son of Zara and Maggie Mack Hatch.

He was a self-employed farmer in Unadilla for most of his life. He was also a town supervisor in that area, and a New York state dairy inspector at one time.

He is survived by his wife, Leona McLaughlin, of Unadilla; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Letha Hatch; and also by his sisters, Lizzie Miner and Pearl Connor; and by his brother, Guy Hatch.

A private interment service will take place at the convenience of the family at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., Gloversville.

John R. Sise

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Rev. John R. Sise died on March 19, 2002, after a short illness.

He was born in Watervliet, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 1920, the son of John J. and Mary A. McHale Sise.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Sise Donlon.

He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy, N.Y., and was a member of the first graduation class of Siena College (1941). He attended St. Joseph's Seminary and was ordained Jan. 27, 1945. He received his master's in social work from St. Louis University.

His assignments included St. Joseph's in Schenectady, N.Y.; St. Francis de Sales in Herkimer, N.Y.; Director of Catholic Charities for the Albany Diocese; St. Matthew's in Voorheesville, N.Y. and St. Mary's in Cooperstown, N.Y., where he was pastor until his retirement in 1992.

In addition, he was an Air Force chaplain from 1953-56.

In his retirement years, he assisted at St. Cecelia's in Clearwater, Fla.

Father Sise is survived by his cousin, Robert J. Sise of Amsterdam, N.Y.; his niece, Mary Jo Avery of Averill Park, N.Y.; and several great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

Father Sise served on many boards, including Bassett Healthcare, the Scriven Foundation, Pathfinder Village and the Catholic Charities Board of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of Leatherstocking GC in Cooperstown and a former member of Wolferts Roost CC in Albany.

He had several friends of all faiths, lived life to its fullest, was quick to smile and to bring a smile to those he met.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, with Bishop Howard J. Hubbard presiding.

He will lie in state at St. Mary's Church on Friday, March 22, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christ the High Priest will be celebrated Friday at 8 p.m. at St. Mary's.

Those who wish to honor his life may make contributions in his memory to Siena College, 515 Loudon Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.

Douglas G. Palen

GILBERTSVILLE — Douglas George Palen, 51, of Gilbertsville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 13, 1950, in Goshen, the son of Wallace K. and Helen M. Palen.

He graduated from Wallkill Central School and attended Cornell University.

He was a former member of the New Hurley Reformed Church of Wallkill.

He had lived in the Gilbertsville area for the past 25 years and had worked as a self-employed farrier.

Doug was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.

He is survived by his parents; a daughter, Danielle Palen of New Cannan, Conn.; his brothers, Alan D. Palen of Campbell Hall, and Les K. Palen of Trout Creek, Mont.; his sisters, Donna P. Clark and husband, Warren, of Wallkill, Laure J. Palen of Kingston, Amy J. O'Hearn and husband, Edward, of Laconia, N.H.; his nieces, AM2 Jennie L. Clark of U.S. Navy at Lemoore,  Calif., Ali and Tami Palen of Walden, Kerri Krazia of Walden, Gerri Dedi of Kingston, Emma O'Hearn of Laconia, N.H.; a nephew, Michael Keator Price of Walden; and aunts and uncles.

There will be no calling hours, and a memorial service will be held at Doug's home on Saturday at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to the Otsego County Federated Sportsman's Clubs or the Gilbertsville Emergency Squad in his memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.

Ruth Audrey Groh

ONEONTA — Ruth Audrey Groh, 78 years, of Oneonta, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the Oneonta Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center, Oneonta.

She was born April 3, 1923, in Jersey City, N.J., the daughter of Carl and Anna (Ruhle) Treiber. Mr. and Mrs. Treiber were from Stuttgart, Germany.

Ruth married Peter Groh on Nov. 5, 1950, in West New York, N.J.

In 1965, Ruth and Peter moved from New Jersey to Delhi and in 1980, they moved to Oneonta.

Ruth was a loan officer and also the assistant vice president at Wilber National Bank, Oneonta, for many years.

She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sidney, and was very active in the church until the decline of her health.

She enjoyed baking and spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving husband, Peter Groh, of Oneonta; her son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Patricia Groh of Delhi; and her two grandchildren, Brian and Jenna Groh of Delhi; a brother-in-law and his wife, Walter and Carol Groh; and numerous cousins.

There will be no funeral services or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 139 West Main St., Sidney, NY 13808 in loving memory of Ruth Audrey Groh.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

James Cummings Sr.

COBLESKILL — James W. Cummings Sr., 94, of Darby Hill Road, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Cobleskill.

He was born on June 8, 1907, the son of the late James L. and Emma Tschanz Cummings.

Mr. Cummings was a lifelong resident of Quaker Street and a graduate of Delanson High School.

He was employed as maintenance and ways superintendent for the Delaware and Hudson Railway for 46 years retiring in 1972.

Mr. Cummings was highly respected in the area and will be remembered as a "first-class gentleman."

Spring interment will be held in the Grove Cemetery, Quaker Street.

Henry J. Seymour

MORRIS — Henry (Hank) J. Seymour, 79, of Morris, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in  Johnson City.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1922, in Norfolk, Va., the son of Henry J. Seymour and Alice (Osborn) Seymour.

He married Virginia Richards on June 20, 1948, in Williston Park.

He was employed by the Griffith Air Force Base in Rome, as a mechanic and later as a quality control evaluator until his retirement in 1984.

Hank and his wife had resided in the Morris area for the past 31 years.

He was a past commander and charter member of the Morris VFW and was also a life member of the VFW. He was also a life member of the Morris American Legion Post.

His wife, Virginia, of Morris, three nieces and a nephew survive him.

He was predeceased by his brother and sisters, who were Harold Seymour, Mildred Seymour, Margaret Sauer and Lola Zinzer.

It was Hank's wishes that no calling hours or funeral services be held at this time. He was cremated at the Hillington Crematory in Morris and his cremains will be interred in Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton.

Friends are asked to donate to the Morris Emergency Squad in Hank's memory.

Funeral arrangements are by the Johnston Funeral Home of Morris.
