Walter L. Hunt
UNADILLA — Walter Leon (Buster) Hunt, 77, a lifelong resident of Unadilla, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.
He was born on Nov. 17, 1924, the son of Walter Lincoln Hunt and Leona Van Cott Hunt.
In his youth he attended the first Boy Scout National Jamboree in Washington, D.C., in 1937.
He graduated from Unadilla Central School in 1942, and served in the Army in Europe during World War II.
For 40 years he managed the family business, J.W. Van Cott & Son, a local retail lumber company. After his retirement in 1984, he was active in the antique business and real estate investments. He specialized in the collection of antique clocks and watches.
He was actively involved in the community all his life. He was a past president of the Unadilla Rotary Club, a longtime, 50-year member of the American Legion Joyce-Bell Post 578, Unadilla Masonic Lodge No. 324, and the Unadilla Rod and Gun Club.
He also was a member of the Sidney Elks Club, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and the Lyon Patrol, the alumni of Boy Scout Troop 1. He was a past member of the Unadilla Fire Department and Emergency Squad.
He was a lifelong member of the Unadilla United Methodist Church.
He was a caring, devoted grandfather, who enjoyed supporting all of his grandchildren's activities.
He is survived by his children, Phillip Hunt and friend, Mary Mundt of Baltimore, Md., James and Amy Hunt of Annapolis, Md., Nancy and Thomas Dalton of Unadilla, Dixie and Ulysses Grant of Bull Head City, Ariz. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Wesley and Matthew Hunt, Kristina and Katherine Struble, Chelsie Dalton and Dayton and Freemont Grant. He is also survived by his loving and dear friend, Joan Pell of Sidney.
He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara A. Hunt; and by his brother and sister, Stanley V.C. Hunt and Barbara J. Hunt.
His marriage to Jean H. Hunt ended in divorce.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Unadilla United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kip Stratton, pastor, officiating.
There will be no calling hours.
Interment will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Century Fund of the Unadilla United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 608, Unadilla NY 13849 or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.
Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home in Unadilla.
Phyllis J. Schriver
FRANKLIN — Phyllis J. Schriver of Franklin died on Friday, May 17, 2002, at Albany Medical Center. She was 72.
Mrs. Schriver was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Granton, to William and Geraldine Drumm Beers.
On Dec. 8, 1948, she married Donald Schriver in Cannonsville. Mrs. Schriver lived in Franklin for the past 40 years, before that she lived in Rock Royal from 1930 to 1962.
Mrs. Schriver will be remembered for her generosity to others and her love for her family.
She is survived by her mother, Geraldine Beers, of East Branch; her children, Debbie Fauci of Kingston, Bonnie Gregory of Walton, Linda Menke of Delhi and Gary Schriver of Hawley, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, LaVerna Foree and Ruth Tennant, both of Unadilla, and Terry Lambrecht of Walton; her brothers, Richard Beers of Unadilla, William Beers of Roscoe, Earl Beers of Clayton, N.C., and Andrew Beers of Walton.
Family members who died earlier include her husband, Donald; her daughter, Sharon; her father, William and her brother, Clinton.
There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to either the Franklin Fire Department or Rescue Squad would be appreciated.
Andonia Riggi
MARGARETVILLE — Andonia (Anna) Riggi, 85, of Margaretville, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2002, at the Mountainside Residential Care Center, Margaretville.
She was born Aug. 27, 1916, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Domenico and Marie (Munce) Riggi.
Anna worked in the packaging department for the pharmaceutical company Becton-Dickenson in New Jersey.
Before entering the nursing home she resided at the Kirkside Adult Home in Roxbury.
She is survived by her sister, Lena Postler of Florida; her sister-in-law, Louise Riggi; and several nieces and nephews, including Jack Riggi and family of Arkville.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Holy Family Church, Nutley, N.J.
Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J.

Frances W. Spangenberg
WEST FULTON — Frances W. Spangenberg, 81, of West Fulton Road in West Fulton died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Spangenberg was born on July 31, 1920, in Roxbury, the daughter of James and Viola Blish Meeker, and had lived in Huntersland, town of Berne, before moving to her late home in the town of Fulton in 1963.
She was married on Sept. 21, 1936, to Milton Spangenberg. He died Nov. 20, 1989.
Mrs. Spangenberg was employed as a nurse's aide and clerk at the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County at Cobleskill, from 1960 until retiring in 1972.
She is survived by a son, Milton K. Spangenberg of West Fulton; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Douglas Spangenberg in 1983.
She was a member and a past president of the Auxiliary of the Cobleskill Post No. 5088, Veterans of Foreign Wars, which will meet at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 108 Chapel St. in Cobleskill, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002.
Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home. The Rev. Niel Irwin will officiate.
Interment will be in Bedehl Cemetery, Middletown.
Lewis J. Cerone
COLONIE — Lewis J. Cerone Sr., 82, of Vly Road, Colonie, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 18, 2002.
Lewis was born in Colonie and was a lifelong area resident. He was the son of the late John and Ann Marie Cerone.
Mr. Cerone was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater.
He worked as a self-employed truck driver for large construction jobs.
Lewis was predeceased by his wife, Gladys (Dillenbeck), who passed away on Feb. 10, 2001; and by his brother, Frank Cerone.
Survivors include his sons, Lewis J. Cerone Jr. and his fiance, Tracey LaForest, of Colonie and Vito A. Cerone and his wife, Barbara, of Rotterdam; a daughter, Madeline Orlando of Oneonta. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Rose (George) Kotecki of Colonie; two brothers, John (Susan) Cerone of Niskayuna and Anthony (Jill) Cerone of Colonie; and a granddaughter, Madeline LaForest of Colonie. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home at 1605 Helderberg Ave. in Colonie. Calling hours will be Tuesday following the service until 8:30 p.m.
Interment will be Wednesday in Saratoga National Cemetery.
Lillian Cole
ONEONTA — Lillian Cole, 84, of Oneonta, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 17, 1917, in Schenectady, the daughter of Leonard and Rose (Van Valkenburg) Cole.
Miss Cole was a graduate of Cobleskill High School, Class of 1935.
In her earlier years, Lillian was employed at General Electric Corp. in Schenectady and in 1958, after moving to Oneonta, was employed at the Candy Counter at Bresee's Department Store in Oneonta until her retirement in 1979.
She was an active member of the Main Street Baptist Church and also did volunteer work at Fox Nursing Home and A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her twin sister, Lela Burton of Cobleskill; her sister, Mrs. Paul (Edith) Henry of Oneonta; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St. in Oneonta, with the Rev. Gary Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, officiating.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2002, when the family will be in attendance.
Burial will be in Sloansville Cemetery, Sloansville.
Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.
Dorothy Marsh
PRATTSVILLE — Dorothy Jutrzenka Marsh, 37, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta after an eight-year battle with cancer.
She was born on June 15, 1964, in Glen Ridge N.J., and moved to Gilboa, at the age of 13.
She was a 1982 graduate of Gilboa-Conesville Central School.
She is survived by her husband, Patrick; a son, Corey; stepdaughter, Jody; and two stepgrandchildren, Harley and Cody; her parents, Charles and Marion Jutrzenka; and brothers, Chuck, Steven, Gary and David Jutrzenka.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 20, 2002, at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St. in Windham. A funeral service will be at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Private cremation will follow on Tuesday at the Wiltwyck Crematory, Kingston.

MARGARETVILLE — Committal services for Francis G. Balcom, who died Feb. 1, 2002, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, May 20, 2002, at the Old Margaretville Cemetery, Margaretville, with the Very Rev. Robert H. Purcell conducting the graveside prayers with Military Honors by the Middletown American Legion Post No. 216.

Jennie K. Heon
ONEONTA — Graveside services for Jennie K. Heon, 71, of Oneonta, who passed away Feb. 2, 2002, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Plains Cemetery in Oneonta, with the Rev. John Greiner, pastor of the Assembly of God Church in Oneonta, officiating.
