Alta M. Mason

DELHI — Alta Middlemast Mason, 98, of Delhi died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at Delaware County Countryside Care Center in Delhi.

She was born July 17, 1904, in Delhi, the daughter of Thomas and Violet (Anderson) Middlemast.

She married Harold A. Mason on April 15, 1930, in Delhi.

A lifelong area resident, she was bookkeeper for Delaware National Bank of Delhi for more than 40 years.

An 81-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delhi, she also belonged to its Esther Circle, and she enjoyed membership in the Eastern Star for 50 years.

She will be remembered for her love of reading, working in her garden, crocheting and knitting. She especially loved pinochle with her late husband, Harold, and the dining out that they did.

She was predeceased by her husband on Jan. 24, 1985, after more than 50 years of marriage; an infant son, Thomas B. Mason in 1932; and a brother, Lloyd.

She is survived by her "Bank Family" and her "Church Family."

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi, with Rev. Arvid Whitmore officiating.

Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Delhi.

The will be no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Catskill Area Hospice.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home in Delhi.

Henry Gardner Jr.

OXFORD — Henry. J. Gardner Jr., 80, a resident of the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford, went to his heavenly home to meet his heavenly family on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002.

He was born March 20, 1922, in Unadilla, the son of the late Henry and Carrie Coulton Gardner Sr.

Hank married Roberta Beardsley on March 4, 1950, in Sidney. Roberta passed away Sept. 7, 1973. On Sept. 30, 1977, he married Dorothy M. Brown in Oxford. She passed away June 14, 2001.

He was a retired employee of the Borden Chemical Co. of Bainbridge. Hank retired on March 31, 1984.

Mr. Gardner was a veteran in the U.S. Navy, serving his country during World War II.

He was a former member of the Afton Golf Club and the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277 in Sidney.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dawn Sharp of Sidney, and Mrs. Rebecca Williams of Windsor; son, Danny Lee Gardner of Oxford; brother, Richard Gardner of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Betty Youngs of Bainbridge and Doris Moxham of Stamford; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A son, Larry Gardner; two daughters, Charlene Curry and Billie Rae Bargher; and his son-in-law, Thomas Williams, predeceased Henry.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., in Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Rowe, pastor of the Harpursville Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Glenwood Cemetery in Afton.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at the funeral chapel. His family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the New York State Veteran's Home Patient Fund, Oxford, NY 13830.

Harold Macintyre

PRATTSVILLE — Harold A. Macintyre, 85, of Prattsville, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his residence.

He was born in Port Chester on Dec. 28, 1916, to James and Minnie (nee Pease) Macintyre.

He was married for 62 to years to his wife, Louise, on March 29, of this year.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Barbara Duffy of Stamford, Conn., Grace Macintyre of Stamford, Kathy Macintyre of Stamford, Conn., Richard Macintyre of Prattsville; and his brother, George Macintyre of Norwalk, Conn. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Janice Duffy of Stamford, Conn., and Kristal Macintyre of Stamford.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., in Windham. A service will be held at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m., with the Rev. Roger Schafer.

Private cremation will follow on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at the Wiltwyck Crematory in Kingston.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in his name to the American Heart Association, would be greatly appreciated.

Floyd Rockefeller

SIDNEY — Floyd M. "Rocky" Rockefeller, 76, of 2 Sunset Ave., Sidney, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.

He was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Delhi, the son of the late Floyd Mitchel and Jessie Bell Hoag Rockefeller.

On June 29, 1968, he married Helen Hart in West Monroe.

Rocky was a veteran with the U.S. Navy serving on the U.S.S. Los Angeles during World War II.

For 37 years he was employed at the Amphenol Corporation, Sidney. Rocky retired in 1988.

He was a life member with the Donald Gleason American Legion Post 190, Delhi. Mr. Rockefeller also was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose No. 277, Sidney, and the I.A.M.&A.W. Local 1529, Sidney.

After retirement, Rocky bowled with the retirees at the 20th Century Lanes, Sidney. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish and hike through the woods.

Rocky loved to go to Nancy's and the Country Store to have a coffee and visit with his old and new friends. He was always ready to help a friend in need.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Helen Rockefeller, Sidney; son and daughter-in-law, David and Roberta Owens, Mallory; sister-in-law, Mary Hart, Sidney; three granddaughters, Tresia Easterly, Patricia Giovannini and Susan Kimball; nephew, Robert Rockefeller, Delhi; niece, Joyce Rockefeller, Gainesville, Ga.; two great-nieces, Virginia and Kristy Rockefeller, both of Gainesville, Ga.; several cousins and numerous caring neighbors and friends.

Rocky was predeceased by two brothers, Howard and Silas; and his sister-in-law, Margaret.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. David Masland, pastor of the Sidney United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial with military honors with follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, after 3 p.m. His family will be in attendance from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts in his name may be directed to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River Street, Sidney, NY 13838.

Gerald Jenkins Sr.

MIDDLEBURGH — Gerald W. Jenkins Sr., 67, of VFW Lane, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Mr. Jenkins was born Dec. 30, 1934, in Worcester, the son of Orrie and Phoebe (Millias) Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins moved to Middleburgh 34 years ago from Worcester.

He retired due to disability in 1988 from General Electric in Schenectady, where he was a bucket assembler. Following retirement, he did woodworking as a hobby.

Mr. Jenkins was an avid fisherman and hunter and a former member of the Middleburgh Rod & Gun Club.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1955 to 1959.

He was predeceased by his twin brother, George Jenkins, another brother, Harold Jenkins; and a sister, Barbara.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel (Conklin) Jenkins; a daughter, Kimberly Birsen of New Milford, Conn.; a son, Gerald W. Jenkins Jr. of Richmondville; two sisters, Sharon Nesbitt of Middleburgh, and Elizabeth Esolen of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two brothers, Warren Jenkins of Ponce Inlet, Fla., and Robert Jenkins of Sacramento,  Calif.; three grandchildren, Christopher and Nicholas Birsen, and Gerald W. Jenkins III; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with the Rev. Scott Thompson of the Wesleyan Church in Cobleskill, and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Robert Herrala, officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp., Middleburgh, NY 12122.

Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.

Harlow P. Titus

UNADILLA — Harlow P. Titus, 88, of Unadilla passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at The Heritage Nursing Home in Athens, Pa.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1913, in Deposit, the son of the late Edwin and Bessie (Tiffany) Titus.

He was married to Marion G. LaVelle on Feb. 19, 1943, in Saratoga Springs. Mrs. Titus passed away April 30, 1980.

He had been a resident of Unadilla since 1944, for many years he owned and operated Titus' Mobile service station in Unadilla.

Harlow is survived by a daughter-in-law, Sally A. Titus of Unadilla; a stepdaughter, Vivian Reeves of Saratoga; two granddaughters, Patricia and Timothy Grow of Bainbridge and Sonia and Wayne Hall of Bainbridge; two grandsons, William and Gay Reeves of Unadilla and Robert and Roberta Reeves of Saratoga; his great-grandchildren, Timothy and Gwen Grow Sr. of Mount Upton, Cortney Grow of Bainbridge, Michael, Robert and Kimberly Reeves of Saratoga; also great-great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Timothy Grow Jr., Dakota Cotten and Michaela Cotten Grow.

He was predeceased by his son, George Titus.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at the Westcott Funeral Home, 123 Main St., Unadilla, with the Rev. Allen L. Presby, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Unadilla, officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unadilla Fire Department Building Fund or the Unadilla Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Vernon A. Wilsey

ONEONTA — Mr. Vernon Allen Wilsey "Shorty," 74, of Oneonta died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, of the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born June 23, 1928, in Charlotteville, the son of Alvero and Cora (Eighmey) Wilsey.

Vernon was a print operator at the G.E. Plant, in Schenectady, for a brief time.

He was a lifelong area resident and was a member of the Oneonta Moose Club.

He is survived by his children, LeRoy and his wife, Beverly of Elgin,  Texas, Ruth and her husband, Larry Shibley of Elgin,  Texas, Mary Bennett of Conklin, and Joan and her husband, Dennis Martindale of Worcester; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by one brother, Ralph Wilsey of East Worcester; four sisters, Margaret Cannon of Oneonta, Clara and her husband, Danny Vitch of Mauldin, S.C., Dorothy Strobeck of Tucson, Ariz., and Marion Wilsey of Rivena.

He was predeceased by a brother, Clarence Wilsey.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judy Thistle, chaplain at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery, Summit. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Jackie Wicks

AFTON — Jackie Helene Wicks of 223 North Main Street, Afton, passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at The Hospital in Sidney.

Mrs. Wicks was born on Sept. 24, 1936, in Sidney, the daughter of Earl and Doris (Dean) Hunt.

Most of her life was spent in the area. She was a bookkeeper for Sidney Appliance and also worked for Horton Hardware, Master Oil and Rapp Signs.

Mrs. Wicks was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl S. Galloway and John Wicks, and her son, Earl S. Galloway Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Jenny Curtis of Afton; her sons, Jeffrey Wicks of Farmingdale and Russell W. Galloway of Harpursville; her grandchildren, Jacqueline Curtis, Richard Curtis, Matthew Robert Wicks, Doris Galloway, Teresa Galloway, Rachael Galloway and Claire Galloway; her sister, Sandra Burns of Florida; and her brothers and their wives, Robert and Heidi Hunt of Afton and Douglas and Helen Hunt of Tennessee.

Contributions in Mrs. Wicks' memory may be made to the American Lung Association of Mid-New York, 1249 Front St., Suite 105, Binghamton, NY 13905. Envelopes are available at the Joyce Funeral Home Inc.

Allen L. Epps Jr.

EAST MEREDITH — Allen L. Epps Jr., 54, of East Meredith, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

He was born Nov. 8, 1947, in Oneonta, the son of Allen L. and Sylvia (Austin) Epps Sr.

He married Frances Pedersen on Oct. 4, 1969, in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

A lifelong area resident, Allen graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport, and then graduated from an automotive school in Batavia.

He was an assistant to the director of the physical plant at the State University College at Oneonta for 32 years, retiring in December 2000. Most recently he was driving part-time for Gus the Bus.

He was Meredith town assessor for two years.

Allen enjoyed NASCAR racing, running his John Deer backhoe for anyone who needed it, camping, trains and woodworking, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.

He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends.

Allen was a member of the West Davenport United Methodist Church, West Davenport.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Fran Epps, of East Meredith; his daughters and a son-in-law, Nicole and Richard Brovetto of Worcester and Michelle Epps of East Meredith; his granddaughter,  Taylor Leisenring of East Meredith; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Sylvia Aneita Gesell of East Meredith and Andrea and Richard Hodges of Crystal River, Fla.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Earl and Lorraine Epps of Frankfort and Lauren Epps and his fiancee, Rhonda Rangel of Oneonta; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earling and Catherine Pedersen of East Meredith; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Catherine and Donald Quackenbush of Oneonta and Maureen and Thomas Jung of Germany; two aunts, Elizabeth Palmer of Grahamsville and Helen (Lena Mae) Dibble of Delhi Stage; an uncle, Arthur and Margaret Epps Jr. of Milford; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Allen was predeceased by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ronald Gesell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at the West Davenport United Methodist Church, West Davenport, with the Rev. Kenneth Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.

It has been requested that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either the Handicapped Veterans Association or to the First Responders East Meredith Fire Department, East Meredith, N.Y. 13575 in loving memory of Allen L. Epps Jr.

Funeral arrangements are by Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta.
