Evelyn Buck

JEFFERSON — Evelyn Mary Margaret Manning Buck, "Lynn" to all, died comfortably at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002.

Lynn grew up in Floral Park on Long Island and came upstate to attend Oneonta Teachers' College. She graduated with a degree in education in 1959.

While at college she met and married "her farmer." Charles and Lynn were married on Jan. 24, 1959, after a three-year courtship.

Lynn enjoyed farm life. She and Charles had four children between 1960 and 1964, creating the farm family she had always wanted.

Lynn taught first grade at Gilboa Central School and kindergarten at  Jefferson.

But, her real love was farm life, so she soon returned to the farm to milk cows, raise kids and make maple syrup, a hobby she shared with her husband and children every spring.

Lynn founded Buck Hill Farm Fancy Maple Products in 1978, and was a very talented businesswoman. She was instrumental in Buck Hill Farm's success. During this time Lynn was active in the Schoharie County Maple Festival.

In later years, Lynn worked full time caring for several of her young grandchildren and for her widowed mother.

Lynn strove to be a good example to her children, to be hardworking and honest, and to have fun. She always fondly remembered the active years when she watched Charles cut wood in the backyard while she sewed, cooked and gardened. Her times spent with family and friends picnicking, snowmobiling and working hard together were among her happiest.

Lynn enjoyed her yearly vacations to St. Marten with Charles, doing crossword puzzles, listening to Rush Lumbaugh and watching the Food Network.

Lynn was immensely proud of her husband and children and enjoyed watching her kids exhibit the strong parenting skills they learned from her.

Lynn's deepest values were family, love, friends and work, and she was content surrounded by these things.

She is survived by her husband, Charles D. Buck, of  Jefferson; her two daughters and their husbands, JoAnn and James Little, of Hobart, Sharon and Jeff Collins, of  Jefferson; a son and his wife, Daniel and Tammy Buck, of  Jefferson; a brother, Robert Manning; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and several dear cousins and friends.
