Ilene M. Gregory

STAMFORD — Ilene M. Gregory, age 73, of Stamford, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in the Countryside Care Center, Delhi.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Gilboa, the daughter of the late Morton and the late Cora Stone Germond.

She was married to Robert E. Gregory on Sept. 27, 1947, in Grand Gorge. Robert predeceased her on Oct. 23, 1985.

A lifelong area resident Mrs. Gregory was a member of the Stamford VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Post 6292. She was a longtime employee of the Ben Franklin variety store in Stamford.

Mrs. Gregory was an avid bingo player and was a collector of all kinds of Owl memorabilia.

She cherished her grand and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Robert B. Gregory Sr., of Stamford; her daughter, Marilynn Price and her husband, Bob; three grandchildren, Michael Chichester and wife, Linda of Stamford, Dawn Gregory of Sharon Springs and Robert B. Gregory Jr., of Oneonta; six great-grandchildren, Megan and Zachary Chichester of Stamford, Heather Sawyer of Laurens, Jesse and Matthew Campbell of Laurens, and Makayla-Terese Miller of Cortland; her brother, Timothy Germond and his wife, Betty of Trumansburg. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Barbara Germond of Florida; an uncle, Ambrose Stone of Stamford; former daughter-in-law, Doris Allison of Laurens; special friend, Pat Vanhoesen of Davenport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Charles, also predeceased Mrs. Gregory.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Waylen Bray officiating.

Burial will follow the service in the Stamford Cemetery, Stamford.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Gregory's memory to the Stamford Emergency Squad, Stamford, N.Y. 12167 and/or Countryside Care Center, Delhi, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.

Larry W. Davis

EAST MEREDITH — Larry William Davis Sr., 61, of East Meredith passed away peacefully in his sleep at home Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002.

He was born May 21, 1941, in Hobart, son of Willis and Dorothy (Green) Davis.

He attended Andes and South Kortright Central Schools. His participation in varsity soccer, basketball and baseball were the highlights of his school career. He spent his early childhood in Hardscrabble, Roxbury, on a family farm. He later farmed in the Bloomville area and East Meredith areas from 1962 on.

His passions included hunting, bowling, snowmobiling, motorcycles, water skiing, camping and canoeing.

He married Karen S. Martin on April 22, 1961.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; three sons, Larry and Cheryl (Nygard), Karl, and Robert and his companion, Pamela Burgher; two daughters, Mary Beth and Robert Venth Jr. and Pamela and Clayton Finch; six grandchildren, Nicole, Danelle, Jessica, Jordan, Sean and Brooke; his mother, Dorothy Davis; a brother, Ronald; and sister, Diane; and several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins,

His father, Willis Davis; sister Patricia Van Buren; and grandparents, Horace and Effie Green with whom he spent much of his childhood predeceased him.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart. The family will not be in attendance.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the Hobart United Methodist Church, with Pastor Richard Elder officiating.

Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice in Oneonta or the First Baptist Church, Chestnut Street, Oneonta.

Burial will be in the spring in the Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Hobart.

Juanita E. Norton

ONEONTA — Juanita Ellen Norton, 69, of The Meadows and formerly of Cliffside, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 15, 1933, to Chester and Beatrice (O Dell) Beams, in Oneonta.

She married George W. Norton in 1953. He survives her.

Mrs. Norton was a waitress in several Oneonta restaurants including Jacks Restaurant, West End Diner and Nicks Diner for many years and most recently was employed at Astrocom and KMS plastics.

She was a longtime resident of Shady Acres Trailer Park.

She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, arts and crafts, yard sales and bazaars. Juanita enjoyed doing things for others particularly during the holidays.

She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family.

She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Rosemary Baldwin of Florida, Mrs. Clifford (Bonnie) Osborne of Starr, S.C., and Mrs. Lynn (Connie)  Johnson Jr. of Hartwick; three sons, George Norton Jr. of Oneonta, Randall Norton Sr. of West Oneonta, and Terrance Norton of Maryland; 10 grandchildren, Tracy, Katie, Greg Randall Jr., Kevin, Starlene, Clifford, Christopher, Jennifer and Michael; one great-grandchild, Celina; two brothers, Charles Wilson Jr., of Binghamton and Ronald Wilson of Ilion; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Wyona) Stapleton of Selkirk; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Russell (Ruth) Sherman of Alabama; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Wayne and LeRoy Wilson.

Private funeral services will by held at noon on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Edward Carlson, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service time and also after 1 p.m., at the Oneonta Moose Club.

Burial will be in the spring at Plains Cemetery, Oneonta.

Contributions may be made to the Dialysis Unit of Bassett Hospital, 1 Atwell Road, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.

Sidney E. Vining

DELMAR — Sidney Erastus Vining, 67, of Delmar passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany.

Born on Aug. 20, 1935, in Lexington, he was the son of the late Newell and the late Avis Smith Vining.

Mr. Vining was formerly of Prattsville. He was married to Annette Vining.

He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Olsen of Prattsville and her husband, Thomas. He was the grandfather of Tanya Tyrrell, Natashia Tyrrell, and Brett Olsen. He was the stepfather of Larry Rivenburg of Latham, his wife Shandra and their children, Marissa, Ross and Shannon. Gary Rivenburg and his children, Jennifer and Ashley of Oswego. Shari Riggins and husband, Jeffrey and their children, Lindsey and Rebecca of Delmar. Laurie Ellis and husband, John and their children, Krista and Derek of Albany.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Ingeburg on July 2, 1981.

He was a staff sergeant in the USAF with the Hg 4050th air refueling wg(sac). He was stationed in Landstuhl airbase, Germany. He received the GCM w/2 Br. Lps (60) and AFLSA (58).

He was a member of the American Legion Virgil E. Deyo Post 1327 of Prattsville.

After retiring from the Air Force Mr. Vining worked for Carmen Trucking of Prattsville. He was the supervisor of the Town of Prattsville from 1979 to 1981.

Viewing will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Decker Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Windham, N.Y. 12496.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Reformed Dutch Church, Prattsville, with the Rev. Dianna Smith and the Rev. Roger Shaefer co-officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Prattsville Rescue Squad or the Delmar Rescue Squad.

Kenneth S. Stryker

STAMFORD — Kenneth S. Stryker, 50, left us Dec. 9, 2002, due to a sudden death in Marietta, Ga., where he has lived for the past 25 years.

Mr. Stryker was born in Stamford on Oct. 20, 1952, the son of Kenneth and Barbara Dewitt Stryker.

He graduated from Stamford Central School and has worked for 25 years in commercial construction, employed by Southern Penn, in Atlanta, Ga., and Florida.

He is survived by his three children, Jason Stryker and fiancee, Jeremy Stryker and Sarah Skinner, and Jennifer Stryker, all of Smyrna, Ga.: one granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Stryker the daughter of Jeremy and Sarah: his parents, Kenneth and Barbara Stryker of Stamford; one brother, Dennis Stryker and his son, Blake Stryker of Mareitta, Ga.; a sister, Tina Mirtallo of Stamford; and friend, Kim Arch and also so many special friends and relations.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Elder officiating.

Burial will follow in the Stamford Cemetery.

Esther M. Turner

MOUNT UPTON — Esther M. Turner of county Highway 1, Mount Upton, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday Dec. 10, 2002, at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Penn Yan.

She was born Nov. 5, 1910, in Deposit, the daughter of the late William and Ella Gould.

Esther was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sidney.

She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Jakubowski and her husband, Norman, Pauline Shugar and her husband, Frederick; son, Paul and his wife, Doris; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters and brother-in-law, Helen Patrick, Edna Holdridge, Letha Bridge, Ida and William Langlois and Ruth Malley; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Genny Gould; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased in death by her husband, Lawrence; infant son, Harold; and brother, Clifton Gould.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Sidney, with the Rev. Ronald Woudenberg of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Penn Yan, officiating.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Memorial contributions may be made in Esther's name to the Memorial Fund at the First Baptist Church of Sidney.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Sidney in the spring.

David H. Smith

DELHI — David H. Smith, 78, a well-known Delhi businessman, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002.

He was born Dec. 29, 1923, the son of John I. and Mabel (Seward) Smith.

His wife, Ann Stanton Smith; a brother, John I. Smith Jr. and his wife, Evelyn of Delhi; a sister, Judith Lee and her husband, Robert of Lewiston; and his nephews, Joel Smith, Robert Lee, John Lee, Stephen Lee and Philip Teaque, survive him.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Delaware Academy, Delhi. A Delhi businessman for many years David was employed in his family business, Smith's Jewelry Store until opening his own store Parker House Gifts.

A member of United Ministry of Delhi, he had also served on the Board of Directors of the Delaware County Historical Association and was one of the founders and first president of the Humane Society of Central Delaware County.

Memorial services will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the United Ministry of Delhi, with the Rev. Lisa S. Heckman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Humane Society of Central Delaware County or Catskill Area Hospice.

Burial will take place in the spring at Woodland Cemetery, Delhi.

Arrangements are with the MacArthur Funeral Home, Delhi.

Albert Bridger

ONEONTA — Albert "Bud" Bridger, devoted husband and father passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital. He was 80 years old.

He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Cherry Valley to Martha Wickoff and Leonard Bridger.

He moved with his family to Oneonta in 1932. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1941, and served in the Army in World War II, where he was stationed in Panama.

He married Viola "Dolly" Baumann on Sept. 7, 1944, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.

He was employed with Spaulding Bakery all his adult life, until his retirement in 1982.

Together with Dolly, he enjoyed camping, horses, horse clubs, trips to the Amish Country and long rides, as well as being a "gentleman farmer."

He was predeceased by Dolly in April 2002, his loving wife of 58 years, and his undying love for her was instrumental in the cause of his passing.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, CarolAnn and Albert Bagnardi and JoAnn and Diz LaMonica, both of Oneonta; two sisters, Marion Briggin of Staten Island, and Joan Lind of Los Gatos,  Calif.; two brothers, James Bridger of Balston Spa, and Leonard "Henry" Bridger and his wife, Jeannie of Maryland; one brother-in-law; and two sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren.

It has been requested that anyone wishing to make memorial contributions may make them to either St. Mary's Catholic Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820 or Catskill Area Hospice, 542 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820 in loving memory of Albert "Bud" Bridger.

There will be a celebration of Bud's life at Bookhout Funeral Home in Oneonta on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, from 4 to 6 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 5:30 p.m. with the Rev. Paul A. Roman officiating.

Celia A. Harrington

BAINBRIDGE — Celia A. Harrington, 96, a resident at The Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility, Sidney, and formerly of Bainbridge, passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, in Sidney.

She was born May 26, 1906, in Bennettsville, the daughter of the late Elliott and Olive Whitaker Axtell.

On Sept. 7, 1924, she married Lee Harrington in Bainbridge. He predeceased her on Oct. 20, 1974.

Mrs. Harrington retired in 1966, as a nurse's aide at The Hospital, Sidney.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law. Marian Schmelzle, Old Forge, and Louise and Harry Osborne, Bainbridge; 10 grandchildren, Peggy Hawk, Earlville, Brenda and Harry Glazier, Cookeville, Michael and Kristina Pyle, Sidney, Thomas Pyle, Gilbertsville, Ann and Terry Simpkin, Bainbridge, Lynne and Jeff Mazzarella, Sidney, Carol and Jim Brewer, Eureka,  Calif., Cindy and Cary Aden-Wansbury, Eureka,  Calif., Chris and Steve Smith, McKinleyville,  Calif., and Colleen and Jim Giampaola, Eureka,  Calif.; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews

Her son, Harold E. Harrington; grandson, Robert Harrington; two brothers, Millard and Ralph Axtell; and two sisters, Ethel Waidler and Florence Hitchcock predeceased Celia.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Burial will be at the convenience of her family in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.

Memorial gifts in her name may be directed to the Greenlawn Cemetery Association, Bainbridge, NY 13733.

Cornelius Allen

WESTFORD — Cornelius "Nick" Allen, 83, passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Bassett Healthcare Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born May 6, 1919, in Bumblebee, Ark., the son of Addison and Ellen (Lutan) Allen.

He married Roslyn Lewis in 1944. She predeceased him in 1980. He then married Mary A. Gartung in 1984 in Schenevus.

Nick was a United States Army Air Force veteran, serving in World War II in the 1040th Air Engineer. Squadron.

Nick was prominent businessman. He owned and operated the Main Auto in Patchogue, retiring to Westford in 1983.

He was a member of the Westford Fire Police, the Schenevus VFW Post 2752 and a past member of the Schenevus Rotary.

He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Allen, of Westford; son, Jason and wife, Shirley Allen, of Canton, Ga.; daughter, Libby Gallagher, of Medford, N.Y.; stepsons, Peter and wife, Tricia Mravlja of Rexford, N.Y. and Matthew and Heather Mravlja of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Dr. Lisa Allen-DeAngelo and husband, Marc, Adam Allen, Rachel Gallagher, Madison, Abby and Alexandra Mravlja; a great-grandson, Dylan DeAngelo; three sisters, Nevelle and husband, Eugene Danner of  Texas, Clarice and husband, M.B. Brockman of  Texas, and Charlene and husband, Gordon Etherton of California; two sisters-in-law, Cookie Felps of  Texas and Billy Jean Allen of  Louisiana; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Olaf and Eugene Allen, and a son-in-law, Jerome C. Gallagher.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 16, at the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Schenevus, with the Rev. Edward Golding as celebrant.

Interment will be in the Westford Cemetery at a later date.

The family requests contributions be made to the Westford First Responders, P.O. Box 187, Westford, NY 13488 or the Schenevus-Maryland Emergency Squad, 105 County Highway 34, Schenevus, NY 12155.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, 25 Arch St., Schenevus, N.Y.
