Gordon D. Byron, 81, of 34 Pomeroy St., Cortland, died Sunday. He was born in Solon. He retired in 1982 from New Process Gear after 19 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 489 and Loyal Order of Moose 1512, both in Cortland, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2191. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Unit 153 and was an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, the former Arlene Maycumber, died in 1976.Survivors: His wife of 25 years, the former Nancy Glezen; a daughter, Joanne Corvo of Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Cary of Ocala, Fla., and James of Tully; two brothers, William J. of Cortland and Robert of Binghamton; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Services: 2 p.m. today at Black Funeral Home. Burial, McGraw Rural Cemetery. Calling hour, 1 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, 5736 Telephone Road Ext., Cincinnatus. Nicholas C. Cardell

Nicholas C. Cardell, 77, of 219 Candee Ave., Syracuse, died Monday. Born in Smith Falls, Ontario, he grew up in New York City and moved to Syracuse in 1974. He graduated from Columbia College, Meadville Theological School at University of Chicago and Meadville/Lombard Theological School. He was a minister emeritus at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society since 1974. He was chair member of UUA Ministerial Fellowship Committee from 1984 to '88. He was a member of the board of Hemlock Society of Central New York and a member of Central New York School of the Americas Abolitionists since 1996. He won many awards, including the CNY/ACLU Ralph Kharas Distinguished Service Award. He was an Army Airborne veteran of World War II and was a prisoner of war, captured during the Battle of the Bulge, and later escaped.Survivors: His wife, the former Catherine Seeger; a daughter, Leslie Cardell of Yonkers; a son, Scott of Pullman, Wash. Services: 7 p.m. Thursday in May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. The family will greet friends after the service. Laura Mae Shell Cunningham, 77, of 2400 state Route 48, Fulton, died Saturday. She was born in Fulton. She retired in 1985 as a leader-assembler at General Electric Co. in Syracuse after 37 years. She was an officer of Veterans of Foreign Wars 5885 Auxiliary and a member of Minetto Town Planning Board. Her husband, Roland J., died in 1981.Survivors: Two daughters, Joyce McGarritty of Pittsburgh and Debra Smith of Oswego; a son, R.E. James of Fulton; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. He retired as a pharmaceutical salesman and had owned and operated Discenza Limo & Printshop. He was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.Survivors: His wife of 60 years, the former Christine L. Fantacone; a daughter, Rosanne Discenza of Liverpool; a son, Patrick of Liverpool; two grandsons. She retired in 1998 as a receptionist for M&T Bank after 11 years and had worked at Sears in the catalog department for 17 years. She was an Avon representative for 20 years. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Cicero and a member of its Altar Guild and choir. Her husband, Frederick Sr., died in 1983.Survivors: A daughter, Edith Roeder of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, David C. and Frederick P. She was lawns and garden supervisor at the Mansion House in Kenwood for 40 years. She was a Meals on Wheels volunteer and board member. She was a board member and tour guide at Oneida Community Mansion House and a board member at Planned Parenthood. Her husband, Jerome, died in 1976.Survivors: A daughter, Cornelia Hatcher of Kenwood; a son, Joseph of Kenwood; two brothers, Joseph and Fredrick Austin, both of Kenwood; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. She attended Syracuse University and graduated from Syracuse Memorial School of Nursing where she was a private-duty nurse for seven years. She retired in 1972 as school nurse in the Skaneateles school district after 28 years. She was honored by the Onondaga Chapter of the American Red Cross for 40 years of volunteer service. She also volunteered for the Syracuse Regional Blood Program in Skaneateles. Her husband, Porter W., died in 1983.Survivors: Two nieces; two nephews. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Ryan Funeral Home.
