Jane S. Hess
ONEONTA — Jane S. Hess, 83, of Oneonta, died unexpectedly Jan. 26, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.
She was born Feb. 28, 1919, in Oneonta, the daughter of Elbert and Hazel (Crawford) Sexton.
She married Lawrence Hess on April 20, 1937, in Oneonta. Mr. Hess died Oct. 12, 1979.
Mrs. Hess was a housewife and a former employee of Bendix Corp. in Sidney.
She was a lifelong area resident and a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church and the Women of the Moose.
She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and was particularly fond of ceramics.
Mrs. Hess is survived by two sons, Wayne and his wife, Frances Hess of Laurens and Brian and his wife, Gail of Oneonta; one daughter, Linda and her husband, George Starley of West Windsor; six grandchildren, Bryn and Gavin Hess, Joel and Brian Starley and Brad and Kyle Hess; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Edith Lawton.
Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service time, when the family will be in attendance. Funeral service will be held at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Eileen Cornwell, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, officiating.
Burial will be later in the Plains Cemetery.
Those who wish may make contributions to the Plains Cemetery Association.
Funeral arrangements are by the Lewis-Hurley Funeral Home.
Hilda V. Kipp
WALTON — Hilda V. Kipp, 90, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, surrounded by her loving family at her home on East River Road, Walton.
She was born in Drachten, The Netherlands, on Oct. 23, 1912, to John and Katherine Rinsma Vanderzee.
She was married to Francis Kipp on June 7, 1933, who predeceased her in 1989.
Mrs. Kipp graduated from Walton High School and had early employment in area homes, the Guild Drug Store and the Kayser Mill. She later spent many years caring for others, first as a nurse's aid when Delaware Valley Hospital opened in 1951, and then for many years in many private homes.
She was a loving community volunteer, spending many years working at the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, Delaware Valley Hospital Auxiliary, being given a 50-year service award in 2001, and the First Congregational Church, Walton, where she was a valued member since 1957. She took much pleasure from the fellowship, participating in suppers, organizing the rummage sales and being a member and treasurer of the Good Will Class. She was awarded the BPW Woman of the Year in 1994, for a lifetime of service to the people of Walton. She also volunteered many years for the Democratic Party.
Hilda Kipp was a loving mother and grandmother and had the joy of having her family very close for most of her life. She will be remembered for many things: her love of family and friends, her enjoyment of music and dancing, her wonderful cooking and her beautiful smile and graciousness.
She is survived by two sons of Walton, John and wife, Judy and Frank and fiance, Ann Lavin; three granddaughters, Trisha Kipp of Granby, Mass., Dr. Tara Kipp of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Anna Kipp and husband, Joe Waddell of Mebane, N.C.; and great-granddaughter, Aurora Waddell of Mebane, N.C. Three sisters also survive, Ann Taggart of Franklin, Frederika Cranston of Walton and Katherine Warner of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Pedley.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the First Congregational Church, Walton, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul Cronin officiating.
Contributions to the Memorial Fund at the First Congregational Church, 4 Mead St., Walton, N.Y., 13856 in her memory would be appreciated.

Thelma G. Schriver
WALTON — Thelma G. Schriver, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at her Walton home. She was 72.
Mrs. Schriver was born July 20, 1930, in Walton, to William John and Julia Hoyt Gregory.
She was married to William Schriver, who predeceased her in 1988.
She was a member of the DeLancey United Presbyterian Church and was a 4-H leader for many years.
Thelma Schriver is survived by daughters Susan (Robert) Matthews, Delhi, Brenda Rowe, Endicott, and Betsy (Gregory) Coffin, Schenevus; sons William (Kareen) Schriver, Bainbridge, Robert (Lisa) Schriver, Vestal and James (fiance, Mary) Schriver, Unadilla; brothers, Lester Gregory, Sidney, Wilbur Gregory, Walton and Robert Gregory, Boonville; sister, Lillian Wischhusen, Sidney; 10 grandchildren; and 10 stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call at Lyon Bros.-Way, Inc. Funeral Home, corner North and Delaware Streets, Walton on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Walton Cemetery in the spring.
Jesse G. Presley
GILBOA — Jesse G. Presley, age 68, of Gilboa passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003.
Mr. Presley was born in Tupelo, Miss., the son of the late Oscar and the late Felicia Albarella Haemmerle.
He served in the Air Force from 1959 to 1962.
Jesse's career bridged a number of pursuits, including serving as a Police Officer, employed by the West New York, N.J. police department; an actor and member of the Screen Actors Guild; a song writer and one man band; also as a self-employed owner/operator of Jesse's Hot Dog Wagon in Grand Gorge.
Mr. Presley was a member of St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Grand Gorge, where he served in the choir, as an usher, Eucharistic minister and custodian. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart-Saint Anne's Knights of Columbus and the New Jersey Policemen's Benevolent Association.
He will be remembered by his wife of 26 years, Jackie Cassens Haemmerle of Gilboa; his sons, Christopher and Daniel; his daughter, Amanda, all of Gilboa; his brothers, sisters, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Anthony Ligato on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, in St. Philip Neri RCC, Grand Gorge, at 10 a.m.
Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Hall Funeral Home, Stamford, under the direction of William A. Tari.
Bonne Lee Figary
SIDNEY — Bonne Lee Figary of Sidney passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City.
Bonne was born Feb. 24, 1944. Her parents were Leland Laraway and Agnes Tate Laraway. Bonne graduated from the Utica Free Academy in June of 1962.
On June 10, 1968, Bonne married Jack Figary. Bonne and Jack lived together in Sidney, where Bonne was a hairdresser for many years. Bonne enjoyed cooking, collecting Beanie Babies and spending time with her family.
Bonne will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity and desire to give to everyone she knew.
She is survived by her loving husband, Jack Figary; and three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Grace Cappelli of Chenango Forks, Jack Figary II and his wife, Jennifer of Sidney, and John and Kristen Figary of Sidney Center. Bonne is also survived by five grandchildren who were the light of her life, Athena, Giovanni, Julia, Vito and Jack III. Bonne is also survived by a brother, William Laraway of Texas, several nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
A memorial service for the family and friends of Bonne will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in Sidney. A social gathering will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bonne's family to assist with expenses.
Alvin O. Van Aken
ROXBURY — Alvin O. Van Aken, 77, of Roxbury passed away Jan. 27, 2003, at the Margaretville Memorial Hospital in Margaretville.
He was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Roxbury, the son of Claude Van Aken and Edna Bailey.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 in the Korean War.
He worked at Daitch Dairies in Roxbury for several years until his retirement. He also worked for Whites Dairy, Roxbury.
He graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1944.
He was a member of the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury and the Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post No. 1785, Chaplain for several years.
He is survived by two sisters, Doris Kelly, Halcottsville, and Eleanor Eigenbrode, Wexford, Pa.; two brothers, Otis Van Aken, Redmond, Wash., and Robert Van Aken, Fairfax, Va.; one sister-in-law, Olive Van Aken, Roxbury; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, with the Rev. Richard Dykstra, officiating.
Burial will be in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.
Contributions in memory of Alvin Van Aken can be made to the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, Roxbury or Ralph S. Ives Jr. American Legion Post No. 1785, Roxbury.

Evelyn Mae (Brooker) Hill
RICHMONDVILLE — Evelyn Mae (Brooker) Hill, 86, passed away Jan. 24, 2003.
She was born in Richmondville on Dec. 2, 1916.
She attended Richmondville Central School and graduated from Ryder College, Trenton, N.J., with a BS degree in business.
In 1940, she married Lewis J. Hill (veteran, he is deceased). They resided in Trenton, where she worked as a member of the U.S. Postal Service.
She moved back to Richmondville in the early 1940s and became treasurer of Richmondville Central School and served in this position for many years. She and her husband also sold insurance in the local area.
A charter member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary, she was also a member of the African Violet Society and the Cobleskill Hospital Auxiliary. She was a lifelong and very active member of the Richmondville United Methodist Church.
In 1979, she became a part-time resident of North Port, Fla., and Richmondville.
She is survived by two daughters, Ina Truax of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Sheila Jackson married to Milan W. Jackson of Townsend, Mass., and Richmondville; six grandchildren, Sherwin Truax (deceased), Ina Himme of Port Charlotte, Fla., Cathy Coogan of North Port, Fla., Milan H. Jackson of Schenectady, Simon Jackson of Falls Church, Va., and Aaron Jackson of Fall River, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in North Port.
A spring memorial service will also be held at the Richmondville United Methodist Church before her interment in the Richmondville Cemetery.

Dorrance Weir
COOPERSTOWN — Mr. Dorrance Weir passed away Jan. 25, 2003, at the New York State Veteran's Home in Oxford.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.
Elizabeth J. Moore
ONEONTA — Elizabeth J. Moore, 84, of Oneonta passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital Nursing Home.
She was born in South Gilboa on July 13, 1918, the daughter of Edward P. and Dinah (Mann) Moore.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Laurens Central School.
Her employment career was with Homer Folks Hospital, NYS Unemployment Office in Oneonta, and the New York State Board of Education in Albany.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church and the CSEA.
Elizabeth loved to travel, and for a period of time she resided in Florida and Albany.
She is survived by a sister, Kathryn Frenier of Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Paul Roman, pastor of St. Mary's Church, Oneonta, officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, at which time the family will be in attendance.
Burial will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.

Kathy A. Winne
LIVERPOOL — Kathy A. Winne, 48, of Liverpool, Onondaga County, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at her home.
She was born in Albany.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center School of Nursing in 1989, receiving her registered nursing degree. She was employed as the clinical manager of St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Dialysis Programs until 1980.
She was a member of the American Nephrology Nurses Association and a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her husband of 24 years, David C. Winne; one daughter, Heather L. Winne of Liverpool; one sister, Colleen M. Carey of Rensselear; a brother, Herman E. Quay II of Dryden; her parents, Herman E. Quay and Lolita E. Quay of Cherry Valley; and two granddaughters, Maya Kathleen Winne and Bryn Elisabeth Winne of Liverpool.
She was predeceased by her brother, Glenn R. Quay, who died in 1998.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Maurer Funeral Home, Inc., 300 Second St., Liverpool.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 940 Vine St., Liverpool.
Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery.

Joan Ann Hallock
GILBOA — Mrs. Joan Ann Hallock, 61, of Bremer Road, died on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at her home following a long illness.
Mrs. Hallock was born on April 30, 1941, in Albany County, a daughter of Milford and Marjorie Wright Laraway and a lifelong area resident.
She married E. David Hallock on Sept. 15, 1962.
She was a 1959 graduate of Middleburgh Central School. She had worked at Woods Garage in Middleburgh and then for 22 years she and her husband ran a dairy farm. Upon selling the farm, Mrs. Hallock worked as a customer service representative for the Middleburgh Telephone Co. for 13 years.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband as part of the N.Y.S. Dairy Herd Improvement Association.
Mrs. Hallock was a member of the Broome Center Chapel Church where she had served as treasurer since 1975, and also was a Sunday School teacher
Surviving Mrs. Hallock are her husband, E. David Hallock; daughters and spouses, Alicia and Bill Terry, Gilboa, Heidi and David Pickett, Gilboa, and Polly Hallock, Gilboa; two grandsons, William Terry and Thomas Pickett; sisters and spouses, Patricia White, Middleburgh, Donna and David Wood, Middleburgh, and Martha and Guy Lindemann, Berne; brother and wife, Bill and Marlene Laraway, Middleburgh; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, with the Rev. Paul Buhrke, pastor of the Broome Center Chapel Church, officiating.
A spring interment will be made in Flat Creek Cemetery, Gilboa.
