John E. Mulgrew

John E. Mulgrew, 69, of Canastota, died Friday. He was born in Fall River, Mass. He retired in 1997 as a night maintenance supervisor after 11 years at Philips Broadband Networks and previously was a superintendent for more than 20 years at Finger Lakes Race Track. He was senior vice commander of Bridgeport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8440. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.Survivors: His wife of 41 years, the former Catherine Travano; a daughter, Kathleen Mulgrew of Sylvan Beach; a sister, Mary Audette of Westport, Mass.; two brothers, Thomas of Westport, Mass., and Russell of Fairfield, Maine; a granddaughter. Services: 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Traub Funeral Home and 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial, Pine Plains Cemetery, North Manlius. Naomi C. Pratt

Naomi C. Pratt, 97, of Syracuse, died Friday. Born in Syracuse, she graduated from Syracuse University College of Fine Arts, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She retired in 1972 as an art teacher after 16 years with the West Genesee school district. She also taught art at Valley and Corcoran high schools in the Syracuse City School District. She was a member of the Asa Danforth Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution and the Onondaga Art Guild. She also taught art for the DeWitt Recreation Generation. Her first husband, Elliot Case, died in 1950; her second husband, Minot Pratt, died in 1988.Survivors: Three daughters, Joan C. Ebel of McLean, Va., Ellen C. Anderson of Syracuse and Linda C. Osadchey of LaFayette; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse. Melvin L. Richardson

Melvin Leroy Richardson, 48, of Frazee Street, Auburn, died Oct. 9. Born in Auburn, he graduated from Auburn High School, attended the University of Wyoming and graduated from the State University College at Brockport. He was a counselor for the Baden Street Settlement in Rochester and previously worked for the New York State Department of Corrections and as a counselor for the Monroe County Department of Social Services. He was an umpire for baseball and basketball games at the Booker T.  Washington Community Center, Auburn. He was an Air Force veteran. His father, Walter Sr., died previously; a brother, Jeffrey, died in 1988.Survivors: His wife, the former Jeanine Navarro; three daughters, Tressa of Troy and Dominique and Shantel, both of Rochester; a son, Joseph L. of New York City; his mother, Gertrude  Jones Richardson of Auburn; two sisters, Sandra Shepard of Rochester and Cynthia J. of Auburn; five brothers, Walter B. Jr. of Rochester, Frederick of Auburn, Gerald of Buffalo, Gordon of Westbury and Howard of Riverdale, Ga. Services: 1 p.m. Saturday at Brew Funeral Home, 48 South St., Auburn. No calling hours.

Pearl Richardson, 98, of 210 Fenway Drive, Syracuse, died Thursday. Born in Bowman, S.C., she attended Bowman schools. She retired in the early 1970s from the Syracuse Housing Authority, where she worked several years at the Coffee House. She was a member of People's AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the adult, choir, the Missionary Board and Willing Workers. Her husband, Shelton Sr., and four daughters, Bertha Wade, Lucille Amaker, Jessie B. Jennings and Loraine Miah, all died previously.Survivors: Three daughters, Adelle Jennings, Gladys Gallishaw and Josephine Grant, all of Syracuse; 44 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and great-great-great-grandchildren. He graduated from Central City Business Institute. He retired in 1985 as an inspector at Carrier Corp. after 20 years. He attended First English Lutheran Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. A daughter, Debra Ross, died in 1969.Survivors: His wife of 49 years, the former Donella Decker; two daughters, Diane Mejias of Camillus and Dixie Updike of Cato; three sons, Gerald Jr. of Bridgeport, Joseph of Cleveland and James of Poolesville, Md.; seven grandchildren. Dorothy L. Sagona

Dorothy L. Sagona, 88, of Boulder,  Colo., died Tuesday. Born in  Washington, D.C., she lived 24 years in Syracuse before moving to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1982 and Boulder in 2000. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Syracuse University. She retired in 1979 after 21 years as an English, drama, radio and journalism teacher with the Syracuse City School District. She taught several years at Clary Junior High School, where she produced and directed numerous student plays and founded the Clary Broadcasting Club. She was a member of Eta Pi Upsilon, Delta Gamma and the Senior Women's Honorary. She was a former member of Elmwood Presbyterian Church in Syracuse. She was active with the American Red Cross during World War II.Survivors: Two sons, Jay S. Lindsay of Boulder and Robert H. Sagona of Camden, Maine; a brother, Don D. Ward Jr. of Liverpool; five grandchildren. Services: Tuesday in Boulder. Summer burial, Onondaga Valley Cemetery. Crist Mortuary, Boulder, has arrangements. Born in Utica, he graduated from Liverpool High School and the State University Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome and received a master's degree from Chapman College. He was an accounting teacher at Bryant & Stratton and Central City Business Institute. He also operated an accounting service and had several accountant certifications. She was a life member of Warners United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school superintendent and teacher and past president of the United Methodist Women.
