SHEELY Lillian Juanita Sheely, 88, of Springfield and formerly of Cedarville and Northridge, died Monday afternoon, March 5, 2001 in the Ohio Masonic Home. Her survivors include 3 grandchildren, Mike Zeigler of Cleveland, Steve Zeigler, Cheri and Jeff McFarland, all of Springfield. SIPE Mary J. Sipe, 72, of Grove City, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at Doctors Hospital West. She was born October 26, 1928 in Columbus to Albert G. and Elva M. (McPeak) Schwartz. Mary was a member of American Legion Post #164, VFW Ladies Auxiliary #3424 and enjoyed cooking. Preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Mary is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, William C. Sipe; daughter, Tampa J. Bialkowski and beloved, Jim; grandchildren, Tommy and Teddy Bialkowski; brother, Fay Schwartz; and sisters, Jean Wilcomb, Clara Morse and Shirley Warrix. A graduate of St. Johns University, he received his Masters Degree in Business and Finance from Farleigh Dickinson University and was employed by Borden Inc. as a financial analyst in both New York and Columbus for many years. WATKINS Mary Louise Watkins, age 54, died March 6, 2001 at the Kobacker HousE. She was preceded in death by her father Lawrence and brother Melvin. WELLS Dolly G. Wells, 70, of Mt. Gilead, died Wednesday morning at Doctors Hospital North, Columbus. She was born April 16, 1930 in Hilliard to the late Delbert and Louise (Davis) Moore. She was co-owner/operator of the family business and had been a Mt. Gilead resident for 12 years. Survived by husband of 54 years, Leland; 2 daughters, Sharon (Lon) Pepple of Rogers, Ark. and Debbie (Terry) Baumgardt of Baltimore, Oh.; son, Terry Wells of San Diego, Calif.; 5 grandchildren, Shawn Pepple, Shanin Pepple-Ogden, Kevin and Chris Wells and Tammy Maring; several great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Eddie Moore of Colorado Springs, Colo., Larry Moore of Thornville, Oh. and Kenny Moore of Delaware; 2 sisters, Jean Peake of Thornville and Betty Bartley of Columbus. Preceded in death by 1 brother Robert Moore. WELLS Nena Maxine (Kessel) Wells, age 74, of Wilkesville, Oh., passed away March 4, 2001 at Holzer Hospital. She was born June 3, 1926, in Nitro, W.Va., the daughter of the late Londus H. Kessel and Blanche (Casto) Kessel. She lived in Vinton County, Oh. since 1947. She worked thirty years in the operations of the Wells Farms and Orchard. She taught School in Gallia and Vinton Counties for 19* years. In 1966, her family was selected by the Columbus Dispatch as the Blue Ribbon Farm Family for Vinton County and was honored at the Ohio State Fair. She attended Rio Grande College and Ohio University, after raising her four children, returned to school and graduated from Ohio University, Athens, Oh. at age 50. She taught First Grade at Portsmouth City Schools, 1946, Head Start, 1966 and 1967, Guiding Hand School-Gallia County, Special Education at Bidwell-Porter Elementary, Vinton Elementary, and North Gallia and Southwestern High School, grades 4th, 5th and 6th in Vinton County. She was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. A member of the Wilkesville Chapter #207 Order of the Eastern Star for 53 years, Past Matron 1956 and 1989, served as an officer for many years, and Deputy Grand Matron of District #24 in 1991. A member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Joseph Freeman Post #476 for 32 years and received the Americanism Award for District 8. Past President - Ohio Ladies Auxiliary of the Ohio State Horticulture Society. Member of the Wilkesville Presbyterian Church for 47 years. Served as Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, Superintendent, Elder, Clerk of Session and Organist and during that time donated her baby grand piano to the church. Her hobbies were working in her flowers and vegetable garden, sharing produce with friends, buying clothes for needy children and families and she loved to sing and watch major league baseball. Served on the Vinton County Local School Board 16 years and 9 months. Served 8 years as Vice President. Served 10 years on the JVS Buckeye Hills Board, 2 years as Vice President and 2 years as President. Served on the Management Team of the Tech Prep for Gallia, Jackson and Vinton Counties and she was the only school board member to serve on this committee. Member of the SEOSBA Executive Committee. Gallia-Vinton ESC President 2* years. She is survived by sons, Danny (June) Wells and Eugene Wells; daughter, Constance (Joe) White of Wilkesville; son, Frank Wells, address unknown; grandchildren, Stephanie (Mark) Saunders of Londonderry, Josh (Brooksann) Wells of Ray and Kyle White of Wilkesville; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Hope Elizabeth Saunders; brothers, Harold (Dorothy) Kessel of Dunbar, WVa., Howard Carroll (Karen) Kessel of Groveport, Paul Eugene (Barbara) Kessel of Cookeville, TN, Keith (Margie) Kessel of Sparta, TN, Tom (Carol) Kessel of Gallipolis, OH.; sister, Lorene Hudson, Winfield, WVa.; 14 nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brother Travis Kessel and sister Anna Kathleen Kessel Mace and husband Walter M. Wells. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 11 at 2 p.m. at the new Vinton County High School Auditorium. Her request was for no flowers. WHITEHEAD Chief Fred Whitehead, 80, of New Albany, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at St. Ann's Hospital. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at CROUSE-KAUBER FUNERAL HOME, 225 N. Main St., Johnstown with Rev. Calvin Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Glen Rest Memorial Estate Cemetery, Reynoldsburg. Mr. Whitehead was born October 12, 1920 in Pataskala, Oh. to the late Frank and Rena Peffers Whitehead. He retired after 39 years as a fire chief for Plain Township Fire Department, secretary of Ohio State Fireman's Association, President and Secretary of Franklin County Firefighters Association, N.R.A., member of the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II. He is survived by his wife, Janice Whitehead; 4 daughters, Carol (David) Douglass, Diana (Emery) Bennett, Fonda Whitehead, Roxann (Bill) Smith; 1 son, Rex Whitehead; sister, Edna Priest; brother, Ernie (Ruby) Whitehead; sister, Mary Koontz; brother, Frank (Donna) Whitehead; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by a son Fred Whitehead Jr., brothers Howard and Edgar Whitehead, 2 sisters Edith Dague and Marie Whitehead. Family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. WIDELL Larry R. Widell, age 50, Friday, March 2, 2001 in Rockford, Ill. Resident of Columbus, Oh. since 1980. Graduate of MacMurray College, BA, 1972, Northern Illinois, MS and Duke University, Ph.D., 1981. He was a man that worked with environmental concerns. Survived by son, Christopher Widell, resident of Gahanna and graduate of St. Charles Preparatory and a junior at West Point Academy; sister, Nancy Landers, Severna Park, Md.; brother, David Widell, Chicago, Ill. BERNHARD (ELLIS) Pauline Bernhard, age 87, Thursday, March 8, 2001 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Preceded in death by husband Joseph, daughter Sharon Grove and grandson Dennis. Survived by sons, Niles (Rita) Ellis of Braintree, Mass. and Gary (Nancy) Ellis; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren. BISHOP Mary Bishop, of Upper Arlington, died on March 7, 2001 at age 82 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She played a major role in restoring, renovating, and expanding both the Ohio Theatre in Columbus and the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu. Mary Bishop won wide recognition, including awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the League of Historic American Theatres, the Columbus Symphony, and the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. She was active in organizations such as CAPA, the Columbus Symphony, the Vienna Boys' Choir, First Community Church, and Trouville, where she served as treasurer of the La Rochelle Association. In her 80s, Mrs. Bishop renewed her interest in ballroom dancing, enrolled in classes at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, and participated in ballroom dancing contests with a team from the Bethel Road studio. Mary Bishop was the wife of the late Kenneth Bishop. Her family includes her brother, Howard Gordon and his wife, Helen of Mountain Grove, Mo.; her daughter, Robin Allen and her husband, Dwight of Bethesda, Md.; her granddaughter, Jennifer Mitchell and her husband, Michael of Columbus; her granddaughter, Carolyn Dubois and her husband, Rob of Herndon, Va.; her grandson,, Steven Allen and his wife Jennifer of Falls Church, Virginia, and her grandson, Orlando Allen and his wife, Carolina of Bethesda, Md. She leaves one great-grandson, Nathan Dubois. Visitation will be Friday, March 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Burial will be Saturday, March 10, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Union Cemetery, 3349 Olentangy River Road. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at First Community Church south campus, 1320 Cambridge Boulevard. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Mary Bishop Memorial Fund, CAPA, 55 E. State Street, Columbus 43215.
