RAINEY Lt. Col. (Ret.) Herbert W. Rainey, age 82, died Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Whetstone Care Center. Preceded in death by his wife Katherine Smith Rainey of Statesville, N.C., died August 1995, to whom he married in 1943. They had 5 children, Mary Kay, Margaret Ann, Stephen Herbert (Marcia), David Chester and Martha Elizabeth (deceased); grandson, David Michael. September 1997, he married Annabelle Baird of Worthington and they resided in Riverlea. He was also survived by other relatives and friends. He was born October 19, 1919 in Paterson, N.J. He was a graduate of Pompton Lakes High School, Pompton Lakes, N.J., Shenandoah Valley Military Academy in Va. and Davidson College in N.C. He entered the service in 1943, serving with the Airborne during WW II. He was also a combat veteran of the Korean Conflict. In 1959, he was an instructor of ROTC at The Ohio State University and later in 1963; he was Chief of ROTC Division XV at Ft. Hayes, Oh. In 1964, he retired from the U.S. Army as a Lt. Col. Shortly after his military career, he joined the Lazarus Co. and was an Associate for 16 years. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2002 at the RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 515 High St., Worthington with Pastor Jim Custer officiating. A private family burial will be held at Oak Grove cemetery in Delaware, Oh. The family will welcome friends at the funeral home from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Riverside & Grant, 3535 Olentangy River Rd., Columbus, Oh. 43214-3998.

RIDENOUR William A. Ridenour, age 74, of Galloway, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at Doctors West Hospital. Veteran U.S. Army and retired general contractor for 50 years. Preceded in death by his son Mark, parents Laird and Faye Ridenour, brother Barney and sister Jessie. Survived by wife, Ruth; son, Tim (Liz); sister, Nancy; granddaughter, Christina; step-grandchildren, Candy, Heather, and Raymond; step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. ROBERTS Joyce Roberts, 68, departed this life Monday, September 2, 2002 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. A business women owning former Redd's Babysitting Service, Redd's Group Homes, and retired as owner of Natural Motions Hair Design. She also maintained foster children for various agencies. Preceded in death by father Shelton Flack, brother Roger Flack, son Carlos Roberts, former husband and father of her children Douglas Roberts. ROBINSON Florence E. Robinson, age 88, of Columbus, died Thursday September 5, 2002 at Oakleaf Village Seniors Community. Member Worthington Presbyterian Church. Preceded in death by husband James Edward Robinson. SKIPPER Donald M. Skipper, "Skip", age 72, of Grove City, died Thursday, September 5, 2002 at Mount Carmel Medical Center. Mr. Skipper was a member of Grove City United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army Veteran, graduate of Columbus West High School, 1948, "Class of Champions" and a founding member of Hickory Hills Golf Club. Donald is preceded in death by parents George and Madge Skipper, sisters Martha Igel and Esther Banning, brother H. David Skipper. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; children, George Thomas (Cheryl) Skipper, Ned A. Skipper and Kenton (Ruby) Skipper; grandchildren, Timothy, Kristin, Hilary and Charlie. SUMMERS Adam W. Summers, 31, of Grove City, beloved husband, father and son died Monday, September 2, 2002. Employed by Big Lots and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers Fan. TAYLOR Richard F. "Dick" Taylor, age 81, of Marysville, formerly of Columbus, died Thursday, September 5, 2002, at Heartland of Marysville Nursing Home following an extended illness. He and his wife owned and operated Beechwold Laundromat and Erin Cleaners in Northern Columbus for 18 years, and he formerly was employed with Westinghouse Electric for 11 years. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy having served aboard the USS South Dakota and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a longtime member of the Worthington United Methodist Church and had attended The Ohio State University for two years. Dick had a genuine passion for maritime activities and enjoyed sailing on Lake Erie. His greatest pleasure came from his dedicated volunteerism from 1989-2000 with the Santa Maria in Columbus. He volunteered over 2000 hours by giving tours and performing other duties, and, in 1999, was named Volunteer of the Year by the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of FirstLink, Inc. He will be remembered as a hardworking man and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was born June 29, 1921 in Newark. He was preceded in death by his mother Patsy F. Taylor and his step-father Glenn W. Taylor. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wanda Creswell Taylor, to whom he was married on June 30, 1944, in Mansfield; a daughter, Becky (George) Andrews, Ostrander; a son, Wes Taylor, Powell; 3 Grandchildren, Debbie Andrews, Newark, Jim (Erin) Andrews, Plain City; and Dan Taylor, Jacksonville, FL; and numerous friends and former customers. Graveside service with full military honors will be held Sunday, September 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Iberia cemetery. Pastor Barbara Smith of the Iberia Presbyterian Church will officiate. TRACY Donald E. Tracy, 73, formerly of Columbus, London and New Carlisle, Oh., passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at his residence in Smyrna, Tenn. He was born July 25, 1929 in Columbus, the son of John M. and Loretta (Kimbrough) Tracy. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. He was a CPA for 50 years and played semi pro football and coached peewee football. He worked with the News Reel for the Blind of Columbus, Oh. and was very involved in Youth Sports in the New Carlisle area and was instrumental in the development of the New Carlisle Cubs and Wee Arrows. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy L. Tracy; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Barbara Tracy of Huber Heights, Oh., Pat and Cindy Tracy of Smyrna; 4 grandchildren, Jason, Lisa, Celeste and Jesse Tracy; 2 great-grandsons, Jacob and Jordan; sister, Rebecca Tracy of Reynoldsburg, Oh.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2002 at the TROSTEL, CHAPMAN & CHRISTMAS FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Oh., where friends may call 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Burial in New Carlisle cemetery. TRINTER Carolyn Rose Trinter, 15, died at her home Sunday, September 1, 2002 after coping courageously with her illness. Carolyn was a member of St. Anthony Church and a member of the youth group at Church of the Good Shepherd. An honor roll student throughout her school years, she was a sophomore at Northland High School. Carolyn was a proud member of the 'Pride of the Vikings' Marching Band, with whom she marched in the 2002 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Carolyn was the first recipient of the Most Inspirational Marcher Award, which is to be presented annually by the Northland Instrumental Music Department. Carolyn was also active in the Drama Department at Northland. In October 1999, Carolyn was a guest of The Ohio State University Marching Band and had the honor of directing the band in Across the Field both in St. John Arena and in Ohio Stadium. Carolyn was selected by Children's Hospital to receive the 'Special Courage Award' for the 2001 Carl Lewis Track & Field Camp and Festival. Olympic track and field legend, Carl Lewis presented this award to Carolyn. She was also a volunteer with Children's Hospital. Carolyn loved music, school, her family and friends. She had a positive attitude, which allowed her to make the most of every day and live her life to the fullest. She is survived by her devoted and loving family, parents David and Diane Trinter and brother Eric; grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, her three best friends, Courtney, Heather and Stephanie, and many other supportive friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 6, 2002 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1300 Urban Drive, Father Mark Ghiloni, Celebrant. WALLS John R. Walls, 66, of Grove City, died Monday, September 2, 2002 in Atlanta after a sudden illness. Born in Lincoln Co., Ky. to John and Eunice. John was a veteran of the United States Army, Member and Deacon at Highland Baptist Church, and retired from Auto Club Insurance Co. He was preceded in death by son Mark, September 2001, his parents and his sister Lois. Survivors include his loving family, wife of 42 years, Mary Ann; daughter, Beth (Bill) Taylor; and his best buddy and grandson, Zack. BELHORN Linda Ellen Belhorn, age 57, of Dublin, died September 7, 2002. Preceded in death by parents Kenneth E. and Erma B. Mace and uncle Donald Mace. BRIGGS Shirley Compton Briggs, age 78, of Gahanna, Ohio, died Friday, September 6, 2002 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio after a courageous battle with diabetes and Parkinson's disease. Shirley was born in Barnes, Kansas on October 27, 1923 to Reed William and Mary Aileen Compton. She attended the Waterville and Marysville public schools and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in June of 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Psychology and Economics. Beginning in 1948, Shirley was employed for several years as a counselor in the personnel department of Western Electric in Lincoln, Nebraska. On March 16, 1952, she married Stephen D. Briggs at the First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, who preceded her in death after 43 years of marriage. For nearly 20 years Shirley was employed by the State of Ohio Bureau of Disability Determination and was a supervisor of claims adjudicators. She retired in 1989. Her vocational interests included music and art. She had been a violinist in the University of Nebraska and Lincoln Symphony Orchestras, and she continued throughout life to play for her own musical pleasure. She particularly enjoyed playing the violin with the Bureau of Disabilities Employees musical ensemble at the annual Christmas concert with her co-workers. Survivors include daughter, Jane (Steve) Burrell of Arlington, Tx.; son Daniel Briggs of Gahanna, Oh.; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Stacy Burrell of Arlington, Tx.; sister, Bonnie (Norman) Todenhoft of White Sulphur Springs, WV; niece, Mary K. Todenhoft of York, Pa.; and nephew, Master Sgt. Walter Todenhoft of Burke, Va. Family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Monday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd, Gahanna, Oh. BRUNNER Avonell Brunner, age 72 went to be with her Lord on September 7, 2002. Born August 25, 1910 in Hamden, Ohio to the late Lewis and Stella Ashley. She is preceded in death by her husband Douglas Brunner and daughter Suzanne Jepson. A loving mother, she will be greatly missed by daughter, Sonia Weiner; sons: Charles (Maxine), Thomas (Patricia), James (Martha), Larry (Susan), Michael (Jackie), Bruce (JoLynn), Virgil (Sandy) and Walter Brunner; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. COATE Helen Elizabeth (Sis) Schenck Coate, 81 passed away Thursday September 5, 2002 from cancer. A Trenton, Ohio and vicinity resident from 1920-1948, Columbus, Ohio 1948-1991, Johnstown, Ohio 1991-2002. Baptized member of the East Columbus Christian Church, Columbus, Ohio. Born October 12, 1920 in Trenton, Ohio. She was the second child of fourteen born to Roy V. and Laura Helen Schenck who preceded her in death along with sisters Mary Watson and Martha Jean Tincher. Helen was a devoted mother to son, Warren E. Coate and daughter, Wendy Lee Brenot (Charles) and a great homemaker and wife of husband Warren E. Coate for 54 years, who survive her. She is also survived by sisters Pat Harris, Dorothy Dailey, Sherry Schanie (Harold), Carol Marcum (Beverly (Jr.), Joyce Skinner and brothers, Homer Schenck (Nancy), Jack Schenck (Marie), Bob Schenck (Barb), Ted Schenck, James Schenck (Martha), Bill Schenck (Phyllis) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the Coate family. Known for her selflessness and generous spirit, a past President of the East Columbus Lion's Club Auxiliary, past Vice President of the East Columbus Christian Church's Ladies Aide. COMER Opal M. Comer, age 80, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2002 at her home, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Comer had retired from the Big Bear Bakery. Opal is preceded in death by her parents, Roachie and Roxie Terry; son, Roger Hamilton; grandson, Michael; sisters, June Hollifield, Grace Comer and Loretta Hale. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur; children, Norma (Richard) Pohlable and William Comer; grandchildren, Steven, Bruce, Michelle, David, Thomas, Michael, Jamie, Anita, and Timothy; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mattie Gibson, Ruby (Hershel) Griffth, Minnie Davis and Nadine Kuhn.
