Mary Alice Neikirk
Tiffin native

Word has been received of the death of Mary Alice Neikirk, 81, of Oklahoma City, Okla., who died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at her home.

She was born in Tiffin June 2, 1918, to Marcus and Corrine Mangett. On Sept. 19, 1939, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, she married Harold Neikirk, whom she had met in 1937 at a school function. He survives.

Survivors also include: five children, David, Dennis, Dale, Debbie and Dean; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Kate and Evelyn.

Her parents, two sisters, Madeline and Lucille, and a brother, Marcus Jr., are deceased.

Mrs. Neikirk, who had resided in Oklahoma City since 1947, was an active member of St. Francis of Assissi Parish, its Altar Society and Catholic Daughters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Jan. 8 in St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church. Burial was in Resurrection Memorial cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Rosary Catholic Church, Oklahoma City, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Ruth L. Miller
Bellevue G.E. employee

Ruth L. Miller, 81, of Madden Street, Bellevue, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in The Arbors at Clyde.

She was born July 17, 1918, in Akron, to Earl R. and Ida M. (Howell) Becker. Her husband, Marcus H. Miller, whom she married July 22, 1939, in the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, Bellevue, is deceased.

Surviving are: two sons, Michael E. Miller of Bellevue and Paul A. Miller of Jackson, Tenn.; two daughters, Linda M. Lamb of Bellevue and Deborah A. Miller of Fostoria; nine grandchildren: and four great-grandchildren.

A brother, Maurice Becker; and three sisters, Esther Becker, Lillian Zaebst and Dorothy Speelman, are deceased.

Mrs. Miller, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its St. Cecelia Choir, was employed for many years at the General Electric Bellevue Lamp Plant until its closing.

She also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, Immaculate Circle 757 of the church, Four County Young at Heart Senior Citizens, the Bellevue Lamp Plant Alumni Club and the Bellevue Eagles Auxiliary.

Prayers will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Foos and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue, followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Resurrection in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in Bellevue Catholic cemetery.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where Daughters of Isabella services will be at 3:45 p.m. and the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church.

Betty Jane Losey
Homemaker

Betty Jane Losey, 77, of 7094 East Harbor Road, Marblehead, died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton.

She was born in West Lodi, Dec. 7, 1922, to Oswald and Dora (Myers) Lenz. On Oct. 7, 1950, in Ashland, Ky., she married Robert H. "Bob" Losey, who died Aug. 5, 1993.

Survivors include: two sons, Randy Losey of Marblehead and Jeff Losey of Tiffin; a stepdaughter, Nancy Margaret Losey of Marblehead; two stepsons, John Losey of Tiffin and Robert H. Losey Jr. of Ohio; a sister, Eva Frontz of Tiffin; three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

A stepson, James Losey, four brothers and three sisters are deceased.

A homemaker, Mrs. Losey also was a partner with her husband in the coin machine operator business.

She was a past member of the First Lutheran Church in Tiffin.

The Rev. Margaret M. Marks will be the officiant at the 1:30 p.m. Friday service in the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home. Burial will be in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.

Judy G. Teets
Findlay homemaker

Judy G. Teets, 88, of 604 Center St., Findlay, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in the Fox Run Manor, Findlay.

She was born Jan. 23, 1911, in Spencerville, to Oliver and Minta C. (Stombaugh) Ward. On Jan. 7, 1937, she married Joseph W. Teets, who died Dec. 23, 1981.

Surviving are: three sons, Joseph C. Teets of Toledo, Jim Teets of Findlay and Gary Teets of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Henderson of Mt. Blanchard.

A son, Jon Teets; a daughter, Jaclyn Sherlock; a brother, Sid Ward; and a sister, Alberta Arnold, are deceased.

Mrs. Teets, a homemaker, was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Findlay and the Findlay Senior Citizens.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey, with the Rev. Dick Powell officiating. Interment will be in Wharton-Richland Union cemetery, Wharton.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Catherine M. (Pethe) Slater
Retired registered nurse

Catherine M. (Pethe) Slater, 84, formerly of Carey and Vero Beach, Fla., died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in St. Francis Home, Tiffin, where she had resided for the past year.

She was born May 10, 1915, in Seneca County, to Joseph and Alice (Kirian) Pethe. In 1948, she married Joseph Slater, who died in 1982.

Surviving are: a step-daughter, Pat Haller of New York City, N.Y.; two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Sister Alice Pethe of St. Francis Convent, Tiffin.

Five brothers and two sisters also are deceased.

Mrs. Slater, a retired registered nurse, worked in Memorial Hospital, New York City for 40 years.

A member of St. Helen's Catholic Church, Vero Beach, she also worked as a ship nurse on the SS America, SS United States and SS Independence.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Carey, with the Rev. Arthur Young as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Carey.

Visitation will be 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, Carey, where a Christian wake service will be at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Home, in care of the Stombaugh Memorial Funeral Home, 225 W. Findlay St., Carey, Ohio 43316-1169.

Orrin Earl 'Bub' Thornton
Midwest Industries retiree

Orrin Earl "Bub" Thornton, 82, of 14359 E. SR 224, Attica, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in the Hillside Acres Nursing Home, Willard.

He was born in Bucyrus, March 10, 1917, to Orrin W. and Ina Pearl (Karber) Thornton. His wife, Geraldine G. (Keller) Thornton, whom he married May 26, 1942, survives.

Other survivors include: a son, John E. Thornton of Attica; two daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Jacqualin) Stephens and Mrs. John (Jane) King, both of Attica; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Zola M. Blair of Zephyhills, Fla.; and a sister-in-law.

A brother, Raymond Thornton; and a sister, Imogene Thornton, are deceased.

Mr. Thornton, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, worked at Shunk Mfg. in Bucyrus and retired in April 1980 from Midwest Industries, Willard.

He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Attica and a former member of the Attica Fire Department, Attica American Legion, Attica Lions Club and the church's KOC.

The Rev. Joseph Szybka will be the celebrant at the 11 a.m. Saturday Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Attica American Legion Post 260.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Lindsey-Foos-Kocher Funeral Service, Attica, where the rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the church or the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home.

Fred W. Bickenheuser
Author of Tiffin Glass books

Word has been received of the death of Fred W. Bickenheuser of Grove City, who died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, following a lengthy illness.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, two sons, two daughters, 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mr. Bickenheuser was the author of several books on Tiffin Glass, including "U.S. Glass A-Z" and "Tiffin Glassmasters Books I, II and III."

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Schoendenger-Norris Funeral Home, Grove City.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Tiffin Glass Museum, P.O. Box 554, Tiffin.

Ernest E. Bowman
Retired minister

Ernest E. Bowman, 85, of West Lytle Street, Fostoria, died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born in Middlebury, Ind., June 17, 1914, to William and Ida (Rhinesmith) Bowman. His first wife Elsie (Miller) Bowman, whom he married in Bristol, Ind., is deceased. He later married Elenore Drenning-Mehrman Nov. 19, 1983, in Fostoria. She survives in Fostoria.

Survivors also include: a son, Darell W. Bowman of Syracuse, Ind.; step-sons Robert Mehrman of Tiffin and Terry Mehrman of Jenera; a step-daughter, Margo Long of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Vera Tyson of Middlebury, Ind.; three grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A step-son, Roger Mehrman; four brothers, Galen, Glen, Chance and Emerson Bowman; and two sisters, Ruth and Dorothy Bowman, also are deceased.

A retired minister for the Church of the Brethren in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, Mr. Bowman also was employed as a carpenter in Middlebury.

A 1932 graduate of Middlebury High School and a 1942 graduate of the United Brethren Bethany Seminary, Chicago, Ill., he attended the Four Square Gospel Church in Fostoria.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, Ind. Burial will be in Grace Lawn cemetery, Middlebury.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Marjorie C. Lee
Sycamore area homemaker

Marjorie C. Lee, 102, formerly of 3798 TH 10, Sycamore, died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Wyandot County Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 28, 1897, to John D. and Lillian (Cochenour) Curlis in Wyandot County. On Dec. 22, 1923 she married Stanley E. Lee. He died June 11, 1969.

Survivors include: a son, Bill E. Lee of Sycamore; a half sister, Jean Knieciemen of Amherst; three grandchildren, Robert M. Lee of Sycamore, Mrs. Cathy Kessler of Tiffin and Jerry H. Lee of Toledo; and four great-grandchildren.

She follows in death six sisters, three brothers, a half sister and a foster brother.

Mrs. Lee was a 1914 graduate of Sycamore High School. She attended Oberlin College and School of Nursing in Chicago. A homemaker, she was a member of Sycamore United Methodist Church and formerly of: Warpole Lodge 3666 OES, Upper Sandusky; Sycamore Literary Club; United Methodist Women of the Church; and Crawford County Farm Bureau.

The Rev. Van Fisher will officiate the 1 p.m. Monday service at the Walton-Moore Funeral Home in Sycamore. Burial will be at Pleasant View cemetery.

Visitation hours will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Cecelia S. Guss
Former Tiffin resident

Cecelia Rose (Scott) Guss, formerly of Tiffin, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Sun City West, Ariz., where she had resided for 12 years.

She was born July 10, 1927, in Tiffin to William F. and Mary I. (Griselding) Scott. Survivors include her husband, Gene P. Guss, whom she married May 30, 1949, in Tiffin. Prior to retirement she was employed in banking. She enjoyed reading, walking, and travel, and lived in Singapore for several years.

Survivors include a son, Fred Guss of Holland, Mich.; four daughters, Marilyn Stover of Salem, Ore., Paula Guss of East Lansing, Mich., Jennifer Ollis of Wetmore, Mich. and Sara Heinzelman of Carmel, Ind.; and 15 grandchildren. A brother, Father James Scott, and sister, Ethelyn Mae Imwalle, also are deceased.

At her request, no services will be held. Memorials may be made to local community hospital children's units.

Emma A. Kovasckitz
Former Tiffin resident

Emma A. Kovasckitz, 93, of Palmetto, Fla., formerly of Tiffin, died at 4:55 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000.

Arrangements are pending at the Hoffman-Gottfried Funeral Home, Tiffin.

Rose Marie Haefling
Former Tiffin resident

Rose Marie Haefling, 87, of Humble, Texas, formerly of Tiffin, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Northeast Medical Center, Humble.

There will be no visitation.

The Rev. Robert Dendinger will officiate the funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at St. Mary Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at St. Mary's cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, Tiffin.
