Gary Oakes

Gary Eugene Oakes, 57, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, July 30, 2004 at James Cancer Hospital, Columbus. He was born February 19, 1947 in Massena, New York the son of the late John and Issabel Oakes. Gary had a successful transplant a year and a half ago. He beat non- Hodgkins Lymphoma, however, due to other complications he could fight no longer. He is survived by four children, a daughter, Tammy (Scott Berry) Oakes; three sons, Jamie Oakes of McArthur, Jack (Angie) Oakes of Jacksonville, Florida and Gary (Meredith) Oakes of Glen St. Mary‚s, Florida; a daughter-in- law, Linda Oakes of Buchtel; two step daughters, Jennifer (John) Davidson of Athens and Shelly (Tim) Powell of Albany; ten grandchildren, Jamie Jr., Mandy, Elizabeth, Mikala, Jack 'L.J.', Ryan and Alexandra Oakes, Taylor, Deven and Allison Berry; three brothers, Robert, Jimmy and Richard and two sisters, Shirley and Elaine and a special friend who has helped our Dad through the past couple of years through the good as well as the bad times, his former wife, Donna Cozort. PFC. Jared Christopher “J.C.” Daubenmire

Private First Class Jared Christopher “J.C.” Daubenmire, 21, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, September 2, 2005 at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was born August 1, 1984 in Lancaster, the son of Timothy Hummel and Paula Hummel Tucker. J.C. was an active duty enlisted Infantryman with the United States Army. His last duty station was with the K-16 Tango Security Force in Yong San, Republic of Korea. He was also a member of the American Legion in Marietta, Ohio. In addition to his parents, J.C. is survived by his maternal grandparents, Paul and Diana Smathers of Nelsonville, and Clark and Susan (Withem) Shepard of Columbus, two sisters, Tia and Caitlyn Hummel of Bremen, uncles John and Joel Smathers, very special friend Jay Jay Eckels, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Richard L. Daubenmire, and paternal great grandmother Hazel Daubenmire. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street, Nelsonville. Interment will be at Hilltop cemetery, Millfield. Phyllis M. Lehlbach

ATHENS - Phyllis M. Lehlbach, 70, of Athens, died early Monday morning, August 2, 2004 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital. She was born on April 13, 1934 in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Hollie E. and Hazel Plants Thomas. She was a lifelong Athens resident and an Athens High School graduate. She spent many years co-managing Ohio University Inn with her husband Ray, and later retired from Ohio University (Chubb Hall). She is survived by her husband, Ray; one son, Timothy (Annie) McDonald of Cincinnati; three stepsons, Larry (Bonnie) Lehlbach of Safety Harbor, FL., Dan Lehlbach of Berea, and Tim Lehlbach of Tampa, FL.; six grandchildren, Kelly and Amy McDonald, Mike Lehlbach and Kim Lehlbach Nottke, and Ariel and Danielle Lehlbach; and four great grandchildren; a brother, Wesley Thomas of Shade; a sister, Thelma Mae Irwin of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers, Hollie Cleo, Kenneth D., Edward, and Richard Thomas; and two sisters, Clara M. Thomas and Dorothy Patterson. Services will be Thursday at 1 PM at, Athens with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be at Bates cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM. Lawrence A. Bethscheider

ATHENS - Lawrence A. Bethscheider, 61, of Athens died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital. He was born December 14, 1943 in Hebron, Nebraska and was the son of the late Gene and Goldie Bethscheider. He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Bethscheider of Athens; four sons, David Bethscheider, Brian Bethscheider, K.C. Bethsceider, all of Athens, and Joey Smith of Albany; two sisters, Marcy (Jim) Gish of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Joan Licht of Athens; and one brother, Kenneth Bethscheider of Silver City, New Mexico; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marilyn Cox and Beverly Rivers. He donated his body to Ohio University Willed Body Program. Arrangements are by . James C. Stump

James C. Stump, 72 of Logan, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at OSU Medical Center, Columbus. He was born May 30, 1932 in South Perry, son of the late Merle W. and Mable Bailey Stump. He was married to Coletta M. Poling Stump whom survives. At the request of Mr. Stump, he will be cremated and there will be a memorial service at 11:00 AM on August 7, 2004 at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, on State Route 664 North with Rev. Larry Poling officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services. Military services will be conducted by the Combined Veterans Burial Detail of Hocking County. Freda M. Crow

Freda M. Crow, age 87, of New Marshfield, went to be with her lord and savior on July 4th, 2004. She passed away peacefully at home with her daughter by her side. Born in Carbondale, Ohio on February 3rd, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Allison and Nora L. Martin Cox. Freda was an excellent student, having graduated valedictorian of her junior class at Carbondale High School in 1934, the year the school closed. She also graduated valedictorian of her senior class at Union Furnace High School in 1935. Freda was also an accomplished musician, playing both the piano and singing the lead in many countywide operettas during high school, and playing for her church most of her life. Freda was a lifelong member of the Carbondale United Methodist Church, and had more recently attended the Bates United Methodist Church. Freda was also a 70 year member of the Pythian Sister Lodge of Nelsonville, and a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, chapter 346 of New Marshfield, Ohio, where she held many offices, including Worthy Matron. Freda and her husband of 49 ? years, Granville L. Crow, who passed away on July 13th, 1990, owned and operated the Williams store in Carbondale for over 25 years. Freda retired from Ohio University in 1980, after working in the housekeeping department for 14 years. Freda is survived by her beloved daughter, Jacquelyn, with whom she made her home. According to Freda’s wishes, calling hours and the funeral were private, for family and close friends. The services, a wonderful celebration of Freda’s life, was officiated by Pastor William Hixson on Thursday, July 8th. Burial was in the New Marshfield cemetery, beside her beloved husband, Granville. KEITH W. SKINNER

Keith Warren Skinner, age 68, of Chesterhill passed away late Thursday morning July 22,2004 at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster. He was born in Logan, Ohio on June 30,1936, son of the late Clarence and Ozilla Schaal Skinner. He was retired from Columbia Gas as a Meter Technician where he had been employed for 36 years.

JUNIUS E. MARKS

Junius E. Marks, of Millfield, formerly of Gibson Ridge Albany, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2004 at Doctor’s Hospital, Nelsonville. He was the son of the late Nathan & Luna Belle Usry Marks, born March 24, 1912 in Warrenton, N.C. Mr. Marks was a welder in the aviation industry, working at North American Aviation. He attended school in Richmond, VA and was a former resident of Manchester, CT. He was a 30 year area resident and had built his home at Albany in his retirement years. He was a member of the Sciopo Township Senior Citizens. Mr. Marks served in the US Army Air Corps. He is survived by a daughter- Joan Pavao of Fall River, MA; daughter & son in law- Patricia & James Watson of Millfield; son & daughter in law- Robert E. & Diane Marks of Rouses Point, NY; 16 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; a brother in law- Joseph (Albina) Twaronite of Manchester, CT; and special friends- Becky & Greg Cox of The Plains. Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife- Josephine Twaronite Marks, 1991; a son in law- Louis Pavao; three sisters- Helen Morris, Mattie Blankenship, & Mary Keith Marks; four brothers- Richard, William, Francis, & Alvin Marks. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday 2:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Father John Mucha with burial in Alexander cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday 7-9PM

ARIANE WARD

Ariane R. Ward, age 66, of Mansfield died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at MedCentral/ Mansfield Hospital following a long illness. She was born Sept. 11, 1938 in Athens, daughter of the late Walter & Roberta Fuller Smith. She had lived in the Mansfield area since 1950. Mrs. Ward was a teller at Key Bank, Mansfield for 20 years. Most recently, she was the manager of the Lexington-Springmill BP station until it closed. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kenneth A. Ward; two daughters- Cheryl Huffman and Angela Moore both of Shelby; seven grandchildren; one great grandson; brother & sister in law- James & Donna Smith of Archibald; sisters and brothers in law- Charlene & Neil McNeil of Mt. Vernon and Sandra & Carl Hogue of Brunswick. Besides her parents she is preceded in death by three infant sons. Graveside service will be conducted Thursday 11:00AM at Shade cemetery. Arrangements are by Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

EVA KELLEY

Eva E. Kelley, age 63 of the Plains passed away unexpectantly and peacefully on Sunday Nov. 28, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Julius and Evelyn Lubonia Green, born Nov. 10, 1941 in West Virginia. She is survived by a son, George A. Kelley of The Plains; a special friend, Jan A. Kovalcik of The Plains; a sister Linda Nelson of Athens; a nephew Dan Nelson of Columbus,; a niece Heather Nelson of East Canton; a brother Dan Green of Wake Forest, NC; cousins- Troy & Marilyn Hyatt, Sheila (Jeff) Dicken, Bill (Jana) Hyatt, Shelley (Brent) Nicholson, Sarena (Dave) Hope and their families. She is preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Green and a special aunt, Hazel Williams. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by Rev. George Petrovay with burial in Hollister cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Linda Nelson, 7140-130 Selby Rd. Athens 45701 to help with expenses due to her sudden death.

Dorothy L. Sheets

Dorothy L. Sheets, 85, of Logan, passed away November 30, 2004, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital of Logan. She was born December 13, 1918, in Perry Co., daughter of the late Frank and Lura Beougher Wolfe. She was the widow of Ottis H. Sheets. Dorothy was retired from Goodyear of Logan and was also a member of the Maxville United Methodist Church. She is survived by a brother, Daniel (Judy) Wolfe of Enterprise; two sisters, Mabel Heidlebaugh of Logan and Peg Spohn of New Straitsville; several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by two brothers, George and Earl Wolfe; two sisters, Edith Wolfe and Josephine Mohler. Funeral services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home 183 E. Second St. Logan, with the Rev. Dixie Bauman, officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer cemetery, Perry Co. AnnaBell Gilbraith

Annabell Gilbraith, 65, of Nelsonville, passed away Tuesday, November 30th, 2004 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in The Plains. She was born May 6th, 1939 in Athens County, Ohio, the daughter of the late William and Roxanne (Hammond) Monroe. She was married to Bobby Gilbraith for 22 years. He survives. In addition to her husband, Annabell is survived by two sons, David (Tammy) Hutchison of Lancaster, Rafael (Tina Stover) Gilbraith of Athens County, three daughters Tammie (James) Gilbraith of Nelsonville, Kellie (Don) Stinnett of Nelsonville, and Danielle Marlowe of Athens, 18 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, two brothers, William Monroe of Nelsonville, and James (Edna) Monroe of Nelsonville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Toby and Ed, and a sister, Sally Cooper Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 4th, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville, with Pastor Dave Cogar officiating. Robert Hatfield Jr.

Robert L. Hatfield Jr., 46, of Nelsonville, went home to be with the angels Monday, November 29, 2004 following a brief illness, at his residence. He was born March 19, 1958 in Nelsonville, the son of Robert Hatfield Sr. of Nelsonville and the late Flora 'Flo' Nelson Hatfield. He was married to Deborah Blair Hatfield, of Nelsonville, for 28 years. In addition to his wife, Deborah, and his father, he is survived by a son Robert 'BJ' Hatfield IV of Nelsonville; three daughters, Lori (Nick) Rucker of Nelsonville, Cassy (Gregory) Hanning of Murray City and Tracy (Dearold) Sealey of Nelsonville; two sisters, Carolyn (Richard) Seymour of Newark and Jean (Walter) Johnston of Nelsonville; mother-in-law, Arvella Lehman of Logan and he was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren; loved by many, he was blessed by three very special friends, Shane Smith of New Marshfield, Dave Simms of Sunbury and Russell Broomfield of Columbus. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Gerald Blair. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette Street Nelsonville with Russell Broomfield officiating. Arthur "Fritz" Smith

CHAUNCEY - Arthur 'Fritz' Smith, 85, of Chauncey died Saturday afternoon, November 27, 2004 at O‚Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born September 6, 1919 in Chauncey, he was the son of the late Arthur J. Sr. and Ruth Collins Smith. He was formerly the owner and operator of Art‚s Welding Shop, and was retired from Ohio University. He was a member of the American Legion, Athens Elks, Chauncey Loins Club and the Athens Boat and Ski Club. He is survived by two sons, Roger (Mimi) Smith, and Larry (Kay) Smith all of Athens; two daughters, Janice (Paul) Gould of West Lafayette, and Sheila (Jack) Claxton of Athens; seven grandchildren, Philip Smith of Chauncey, Alan Smith of Cornelius, North Carolina, Kelly Smith Hawk of Albany, Damon Gould of West Lafayette, Richard Gould of Hudson, Jay Claxton of Dublin, and Renee Claxton Defrank of New Albany; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Elsie) Smith of Lancaster; and a sister, Margaret Lusk of Chicago, IL. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Bullock Smith, 1999. Services will be Wednesday at 1:00 PM at, Athens with Rev. Steve Bentley officiating. Stella Ross

Athens - Stella Ross, age 94 of Athens, died Sunday afternoon, November 21, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. She was born February 19, 1910 in Washington County, daughter of the late Clarence R. & Lucy E. Fullerton Barnett. Mrs. Ross had been a resident of Athens since 1935 and had lived on Maplewood Drive for 46 years. She was a graduate of Athens High School. Mrs. Ross was a member of First Christian Church, Athens, Group 2 Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Mixed Adult Sunday School Class. A charter member of the local AARP chapter, she had been a poll worker for 40 years for the Athens County Board of Elections. She is survived by a son & daughter in law- David & Connie M. Ross of Lancaster; a daughter- June Hoy of Lancaster; son in law- William J. Knoop of Pelhan, N.H.; two grandsons- Paul R. & Kevin J. Hoy both of Lancaster; two granddaughters- Vicki Alarie and Pamela Martin both of Pelham, N.H.; six great grandchildren; a sister - Betty McGill of Coal Grove; two nieces and one nephew. Besides her parents she is precded in death by her husband- Harley L. Ross, March 21, 1974; a daughter- Ruth L. Knoop; a granddaughter- Kimberly Ross; a son in law- Paul Hoy; two sisters- Alberta Schuler & Clara Wise; three brothers- Clarence, William, & Millard Barnett. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 1:30PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Rev. John Longard with burial in Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 3-6PM.

ELAINE AMNAH

Millfield - Dorothy Elaine Amnah, age 64, of Millfield, went to be with Jesus early Sunday morning, November 21, 2004 at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens. She was born June 19, 1940 in Dover Township, Athens County, daughter of Betty Antle Sayre of Millfield and the late Victor Sayre. She retired from Brooks Shoe Co., Nelsonville and attended Chauncey-Dover High School and Concord Church. She is survived by a daughter - Vicki (Jon) Christian of Nelsonville; two sons- Edward Amnah of Chillicothe and J. Dominic (Debbie) Amnah of Bentonville, Ark.; grandchildren- Hilary Amnah of Logan, Rachel Amnah of Logan, Alex Christian of Nelsonville, Kevin Barton of Coolville, and Joshua Barton of Coolville; sister- Barbara (Dean) Collins of The Plains; niece- Melissa (Willard) Cominsky of The Plains; great niece- Krista Cominsky of The Plains; two great nephews- J.D. Cominsky of The Plains and Jared Cominsky of The Plains; she is also survived by her former husband- John Amnah of Glouster. Besides her father she is preceded in death by an infant daughter- Melanie Amnah and a daughter in law- Marsha Amnah. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday 11:00AM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Pastor David Cogar. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 6-9PM. Cremation will follow the service.
