Robert R. 'Bob' Saunders
1929 - 2003
Robert R. 'Bob' Saunders, age 73, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday evening January 29, 2003 at Holzer Medical Center. Born April 15, 1929 in North Hampton, OH. He was the son of the late Connie S. and Bertha B. Smith Saunders. In addition to his parents he was preceded by 2 brothers; Connie and James Saunders, and by 2 sisters; Norma Jean Dailey Back, and Mary Lou Brannon.
Bob owned and operated the Quaker State Service Center in Gallipolis for 35 years. He later worked and retired from the Gallia County Landfill after 10 years of service.

He faithfully attended and was a member of the First Church of God, where he served on the church board of trustees. Bob was a Kentucky Colonol, a former Central Committee man for the Republican Party, and was recently inducted ino the GAHS Athletic Boosters Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in starting and was one of the first sponsors of the Midget Football League; he also sponsored many athletic teams through the years. He was a member of the downtown coaches club, and was active in the Rio Grande College Athletic Boosters for several years; he also was an active supporter of the Gallia County Jr. Fair. Bob was a United States Army Veteran, having served 2 years, while stationed in Alaska.

He is survived by: Wife: Jean Smith Saunders of Gallipolis; Son and Daughter In Law: Rusty and Connie Saunders of Gallipolis; Grandson: Nicklaus Saunders of Gallipolis; Sister: Maybelle Parsley; 3 Brothers: William (Virginia) Saunders of Bidwell, Jack (Vivian) Saunders of Gallipolis, and Roger (Sheila) Saunders of Gallipolis.

Memorial services will be 12:30 P.M. Saturday February 1, 2003 at the First Church of God in Gallipolis, with Pastor Paul Voss officiating. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home on Friday (today) from 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to either Holzer Hospice 100 Jackson Pike Gallipolis, OH 45631 or to the First Church of God Building Fund 109 Garfield Ave. Gallipolis, OH 45631.

Charlotte Arminda Hoover
1916 - 2003
Charlotte Arminda Hoover, age 86, of Gallipolis, died Thursday January 30, 2003 at the Arbors at Gallipolis. Born July 19, 1916 in Delbarten, WV. She was the daughter of the late William and Sarah Harris Justice. In addition to her parents she was preceded by 4 sisters, 1 brother, and by 1 great grandson.
Charlotte was a retired florist, having started her career Ruth's Floral in Gallipolis, before leaving to own and operate her own shop in Pompano Beach, Florida for over 25 years. She returned to Gallia County in 1996. She was a member of the Westwood Baptist Church in Gainesville, FL. She was a former member of the FTD, and of the Business and Professional Women.

She is survived by: 2 Daughters: Joann Canaday of Gallipolis, and Alice Frazier of Gallipolis; 2 Sons: Don Hoover of St. Augustine, FL, and Rex Hoover of Gallipolis; 1 Sister: Ruth Turner of Portland, OR; 7 Grandchildren: Gene (Maria) Canaday of Gallipolis, Mike (Kim) Canaday of Gallipolis, Jeff (Kim) Canaday of Gallipolis, Greg Frazier of Gallipolis, Minday (Phillip) Allie of Gallipolis, Christi Hoover of St. Augustine, FL, and Joey Hoover of Gallipolis; 4 Great Grandchildren: Casey and Ryan Canaday of Gallipolis, Amy Beth Duke of Texas, and Beth Allie of Gallipolis.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday February 3, 2003 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home 810 Second Ave. Gallipolis, OH. with Pastor Jim Lusher officiating. Burial will follow in Rome cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.

Fred Jearl Rawlins
1927 - 2003
Frd Jearl Rawlins, age 75, of Pt. Pleasant, died Thursday April 3, 2003 at Pleasant Valley Hospital. Born September 24, 1927 he was the son of the late Fred and Martha Justis Rawlins. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his Wife: Rosemary Long Rawlins, 2 Step Sons: Asa and Alan Rucker, a Brother: Harvey Rawlins and by a Sister: Erma Rawlins.
He was a furniture craftsman, and a United States Army Veteran. He was a former member of the Bidwell Church of Christ.

He is survived by Daughter: Karne (David) Walter of Gallipolis; 3 Grandchildren: Robert (Christine) Bates of Dayton, Tammy (Dorisl) McCoy of Gallipolis, and Wade (Stacey) Walter of Gallipolis; Brother: Charles (Bertha) Rawlins of Jackson; And many special friends at Twin Towers.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday April 6, 2003 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Rev. Alfred Holley officiating. Burial will follow in Old Mercerville cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6-9 P.M. Military funeral honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Organizations.

Howard Richard Wells
1946 - 2004
Howard Richard Wells, age 58, of Crown City, died Saturday evening November 27, 2004 at his residence. Born June 9, 1946 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late Everett and Rena Rice Wells. In addition to his parents he was preceded by a brother Bernard Wells, and by 3 infants brothers.
Richard was an employee of the GKN Corp. in Gallipolis, where he had worked since 1974. He was a member of Dickey Chapel Church.

Richard is survived by his Wife: Doris Sheets Wells; 1 Son: Rich Wells of Crown City; 5 Step Children: Rick (Judy) Eggleton of Bidwell, Mary (Bill) McCarty of Vinton, Linda (Don) Newell of Bidwell, Sherry (Ray) Hylton of Gallipolis, and Tina (Brett) Harrison of Patriot; 3 Brothers: Otis Wells of Piketon, Everett Wells of Crown City, and Dee Wells of Crown City; 2 Sisters: Dortothy (Mike) Flint of Crown City, and Ruby (Charles) Caldwell of Kerr; 2 Special Friends: Wayne Elliott of Gallipolis, and Frank Cooper of Gallipolis Ferry.

Funeral services will be 2:30 P.M. Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Good Hope Church with Pastor Berkley Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Good Hope cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home on Tuesday for 2-4 and 7-9 P.M., and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be: Frank Cooper, Wayne Elliott, Billy Wells, Reed Wells, Johnny Dale Caldwell, and Rick Eggleton.

Neta V. Wood
1922 - 2004
Neta V. Wood, age 82, of Bidwell, died Saturday evening December 25, 2004 at the Arbors at Gallipolis. Born April 18, 1922 in Pike County, she was the daughter of the late Ida Pool. In addition to her mother she was preceded by a daughter, Doris Kay Holt, and by a granddaughter, Paula Marie Wood, and by a sister Evelyn Shoults.
Neta was a homemaker, and a member of the Sand Hill Church of Christ in Pt. Pleasant. She was also a member of the Gallipolis chapter of the VFW Auxiliary, and the Thurman Chapter Eastern Star.

She is survived by her husband: Cliff Wood; 6 Children: Debby (Les) Barcus of Gallipolis, Susan McKnabb of Columbus, Jim (Pam) Wood of Bidwell, Eddie (Cindy) Wood of Cross City, Florida, C. Dean (Judy) Holt of Columbus, and Howard (Eunice) Wood of Lakeland, Florida; 11 Grandchildren: Dustin Wood, Lacy Wood, Michael Wayne Wood, Jennifer Wood, Tammy Autullo, Mike McKnabb, James Dean McKnabb, Mark Holt, Jodi Holt, Craig Holt, and Cory Holt; 12 Great Grandchildren: Aubra Wood, Jackie and Markie Holt, Jayla and Janie Coplin, Lindsey, Caleb, and Carter Holt, Shane, Dustin, and Mike McKnabb, and AJ Autullo; 3 Great Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers: Bud (June) Pool of Urichsville, and Ross (Rudi) Pool of Port Washington; 7 Sisters: Sherri (Ron) Clark of Joelton, TN, Phyllis (Bob) Dickey of Tippie Canoe, Karne )Burt) Link of Carrolton, Ruth (Tom) McClaskey of Hemet, CA, Fern (Emil) Poli of Sharriosville, Thelma Harmon of Massillon, and Bonnie (Fred) Strayer of Portsmouth.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday December 29, 2004 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Pete Allinder officiating. Burial will follow in Salem cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-9 P.M.

Charles Kenneth Steger
1923 - 2005
Charles Kenneth Steger, age 81, of Gallipolis, died Wednesday evening, February 2, 2005 at Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehab Center in Pt. Pleasant. Born August 22, 1923 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Dorothy Harrison Steger. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his wife Marchita Ramroth Steger in 1970.
Kenneth retired in 1984 from the ODOT. He previously drove a school bus for the Gallipolis City Schools for many years. He also owned and operated C. K. Steger and Sons Livestock Hauling, and was a former Green Township Trustee. Earlier in his life he worked at the White-Westinghouse Plant in Columbus. He was a World War II Navy Veteran, and a 1942 graduate of Cadmus High School. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church, VFW #4464, American Legion #27, and the Gallia County Conservation Club.

He is survived by 6 Children: Michelle (Phil) Ross of Sunbury, Eric (Patty) Steger of Gallipolis, Teresa (Tex) St. Claire of Mt. Vernon, Terri (Ron) Corbin of Gallipolis, Tammy (John) Riebel of Pomeroy, and Jeff (Tracy) Steger of Gallipolis; 15 Grandchildren: Matt, David, and Paul Ross of Sunbury, Wesley and Casey Corbin of Gallipolis, Bryan and Brent St. Claire of Mt. Vernon, Cari and Ethan Steger of Pomeroy, Kystle, Colton, and Drew Steger of Gallipolis, Alicia Reynolds of Gallipolis, Brooke Plants and Jamie Steger of Gallipolis; 2 Sisters: Louise (Edwin) Elliot of Gallipolis and Naomi (Harold) Salisbury of Columbus; Several Nieces, Nephews, and Great Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday February 6, 2005 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Pastor Larry Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Organizations. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the American Heart Association. Pallbearers will be: Matt, David, and Paul Ross, Wesley Corbin, Bryan and Brent St. Claire; Honorary Pallbearers will be: Casey Corbin, Ethan and Drew Steger.

Robert Lee 'Bob' Shiflet
1923 - 2003
Robert Lee 'Bob' Shiflet, age 79, of Gallipolis, died Friday evening March 28, 2003 at his residence. Born December 3, 1923 in Gallia County, he was the son of the late Charles and Edna White Shiflet. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his first wife; Betty Jo Brown Shiflet, and by 2 sisters; Hilda J. Nibert, and Jean Radcliff.
Bob was a retired boilermaker, and a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of The First Church of God on Garfield Ave. He was also a member of Boilermakers Local 667, The VFW #4464, The National Rifle Association, and a former member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association.

He is survived by: Wife: Leoma J. Snyder Shiflet; 5 Children: Linda K. Mahan, Patricia Sheline, Deborah Carhart, all of Gallipolis; Robert M. Shiflet of Bidwell, and Kelly Renee Shiflet of Jacksonville, Florida; 4 Step Children: Ronald K. White of Gallipolis, Diana Glover of Daytona Beach, Florida, Kathy Sands of Cheshire, and Jeff White of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; 7 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; 9 Step Grandchildren; and 6 Step Great Grandchildren; 1 Brother: John Dray of Kenton, Ohio; 4 Sisters: Ernstine Lane, Nancy Fields both of Dunnellon, Florida, Margaret Haskins of Gallipolis, and Anna Mead of Henderson, West Virginia.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday April 2, 2003 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home with Pastor Paul Voss officiating. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-9 P.M. Full Military Honors will be presented a the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Organizations. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The First Church Of God Building Fund 109 Garfield Ave. Gallipolis, Ohio 45631.

John A. Epling
1931 - 2006
John A. Epling, age 76, of Cincinnati, and formerly of Gallipolis, died Wednesday evening at is residence. Born September 9, 1931 in Gallipolis, he was the son of the late Moses and Hortense Epling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his first wife Christine Fraley Epling, by a son, Matthew Epling, and by a brother Miles Epling.
John graduated from Gallia Academy High School, Syracuse University, and the Ohio state University Law School. He practiced law in Gallipolis and in Cincinnati. His greatest interest was in the facilitation of joint ventures between American and Russian businesses. He was the first American lawyer admitted to the Russian Bar Association. John also taught construction law at Texas A&M University and facilitated conferences in construction management in Thailand, The Sudan, Jordan, and Indonesia. He was a member of the Church of the Advent Episcopal Church in Cincinnati. He has been a member of the propeller Club, full Gospel Men’s Fellowship, The International Bar Association, Rotary International, and the Navy League. He was a United States Air Force Veteran, and attended the Naval Academy.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM. Saturday April 8, 2006 at the Church of the Advent 2366 Kemper Lane, in Cincinnati.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to, the Crossroads Hospice Foundation, 9912 Carver Road Suite 101, Cincinnati, OH. 45242 or to the Church of the Advent 2366 Kemper Road, Cincinnati, OH. 45206.

Charles Miller
1928 - 2006
Charles Miller, age 78 of Zanesville, and formerly of Gallipolis, died Thursday April 13, 2006 at Genesis Extended Care Center in Zanesville. Born March 12, 1928 in Wayne, WV. He was the son of the late Thomas Miller and the late Alma Salmons Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife Geneva Dewitt Francis Miller and by a son Daniel Miller.
Charles was a United States Army Veteran, and a retired welder.

He is survived by:

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM. Monday April 17, 2006 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral Home with Rev. Ralph Workman officiating. Burial will follow in Gallia Methodist cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday one hour prior to services.

Military Funeral Honors will be presented at the cemetery by the Gallia County Veterans Funeral Detail.

Alyce N. Hoffman
1921 - 2006
Alyce N. Hoffman, age 85, of Gallipolis, passed away on Friday April 14, 2006 at Holzer Medical Center. Born January 24, 1921 in Mason County, WV. She was the youngest daughter of the late Andrew F. and Lula Lanthorn Henry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband William H. Hoffman Jr. in 1980. Also preceding her are 2 brothers, Marion A. and Lewis E. Henry, 2 sisters, Lucille M. Pearson, and Mai L. Moodespaugh and by a great grandson Ryan Conner Murphy.
She became a Christian in her younger years, and was a member of The First Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker and mother of 6 children, who survive her,
