Marjorie M. Rex
(1921-2005)

STRYKER - Marjorie M. Rex, 84, of Stryker, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio-Bryan.
Born Jan. 21, 1921, at Delta, to Wilma (Layman) and Charles DeLong, she married Alfred Rex and he preceded her in death in 1988.
Surviving are four daughters, Irene Repp of Hicksville, Mrs. Kenny (Pauline) Belknap of Montpelier, Mrs. Larry (Marjorie)  Jones of Bryan and Darlene Underwood of Central; three sons, Alfred "Mike" Rex of Evansport, Harold Rex of Defiance and Donald Rex of Bryan; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, a daughter, two grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 12:30 a.m. until the time of service in the Grisier Funeral Home, Stryker.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Blough to officiate. Interment will follow in the Boynton Cemetery near Stryker.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the family's choice.

Annabelle Grine
(1915-2005)

Annabelle Grine, 90, formerly of rural Bryan, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at the Laurels of Defiance.
Born March 7, 1915, in Washington Township, Defiance County, to Susie Ann (Patten) and Karl Donley, she married Robert Grine on March 25, 1945, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Delaware Bend, and he preceded her in death on June 2, 1997.
A homemaker, she was a member of Marysdale Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, rural Ney.
Surviving are two sons, Jake (and wife, Linda) Grine of Bryan and John (Susan) Grine of Ney; a brother, Louis "Mike" F. Donley of Ney; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-8 p.m. in the Oberlin-Ford Funeral Home-Bryan. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Christian Mass burial services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Marysdale Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father David Tscherne to officiate. Interment will follow in Marysdale Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Cemetery, rural Ney.
Memorials may be made to the church, Laurels of Defiance Activity Fund, or to the donor's choice.

Vera L. Szabo
(1915-2005)

Vera L. Szabo, 90, of Bryan and formerly of Toledo, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at Harborside Healthcare Northwestern Ohio-Bryan, where she had been a resident the past week.
Born July 23, 1915, at Toledo, to Leona (Monnett) and Noah Hay, she married Lloyd Silverwood in 1934 and he preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1951. She then married James G. Szabo in 1955 and he also preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1983.
Employed as a bag handler for the St. Regis Paper Company in Toledo for 27 years, she retired in 1972.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Toledo.
Surviving are her three daughters, Nancy Peterson of Portland, Ore., Esther  Johnson of Pioneer and Mrs. Mike (Lois) Worstell of Bryan; a son, Larry (and wife, Juldean) Silverwood of Blissfield, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clinton R. (Mona) Hay of Woodville. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Ellen Snyder; a granddaughter, Debra Whitemore; three sisters, Pearl, Edna and Ruth; and a brother, Bud Hay. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-8 p.m. in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Father Charles Ritter to officiate. Graveside committal services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park with Father Thomas Wehinger to officiate.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Frederick D. Manley

DALLAS, Texas - Frederick D. Manley, 47, formerly of Bryan, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005, at his sister's home in Dallas, following a lengthy illness.
Survivors include three sisters, Donna Kiowski of Dallas, Mrs. Phillip (Carol) Shutts of Radcliff, Ky. and Mrs. Ronnie (Sharon) Duncan of Three Rivers, Mich.; a brother, David (and wife, Kim) Manley of Pioneer, Ohio; three nephews; and four nieces.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Duane and Helen Manley; two sisters, Barbara and Laura; and a brother-in-law, Micheal Kiowski.
Services will be held at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, with military honors. Arrangements are being handled by the Gonzalez Funeral Home and Crematory in Dallas.

Letha Genevieve Snider
(1912-2005)

FAYETTE - Letha Genevieve Snider, 93, of Fayette, died late Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold, where she had resided since Feb. 3, 2000. Born Nov. 20, 1912, near Fayette, she was the daughter of Beryl (Cottner) and Elmer Daso. She married Walter A. Snider, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1995.
A resident of the Fayette area for many years, she was a homemaker and a charter member of the Fayette Bible Church.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin (and wife, Betty) Snider of Lyons and Kary (Cindy) Snider of Pettisville; a daughter, Karen (Leininger) King of Fayette; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were her parents; a son, Kelvin; and a brother, Carlton Daso.
There will be no visitation.
Services will be held Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at 6:45 p.m. at the Fairlawn Chapel in Archbold. Short Funeral Home in Archbold is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Larry Paul Vonalt
(1937-2005)

Dr. Larry Paul Vonalt, Chair of the Department of English and Technical Communications at the University of Missouri-Rolla, died at Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Rolla, Missouri, on December 26, 2005.
Dr. Vonalt taught English at the University of Florida and at Wesleyan University before arriving at UMR in 1975. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Denver and a Ph.D. graduate of the University of Florida, Vonalt's teaching interests included Restoration and 18th Century British literature, modern and contemporary American fiction and poetry, and technical communication. His scholarly focus included the poetry of Tony Connor, the novels of Donald Harrington, and the photography of Shelby Lee Adams. He served as poetry editor of College English and was project director for the National Endowment for the Humanities pilot grant 'The Mississippi River: Humanities and Civil Engineering.' Dr. Vonalt was a member of the Modern Language Association, the Society for the Study of Southern Literature, and served the Popular Culture Association in the South in several capacities, including newsletter editor and president. He was a long-time faculty advisor to Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society at UMR. In his career, Dr. Vonalt secured ten research grants and awards; published more than forty articles, essays, reviews and manuscripts; and was frequently cited for his scholarly assistance, consultation, and academic service.
His wide-ranging interests included southern culture, contemporary poetry, outsider art, fine art photography, film studies, jazz, the bloodlines of thoroughbred and quarter horses and Doberman pinschers, and a love of New Harmony, Indiana.
Larry was born in Angola, Indiana, on January 10, 1937, to Eula Faye (Gorrell) Vonalt and the late Paul Christian Vonalt. In addition to his mother in Montpelier, Ohio, Larry is survived by his wife Elizabeth Cummins of Rolla; his daughter Larkin Vonalt, grandson Julian Lieu and son-in-law Elmer Lieu of Livingston, Montana; siblings Merrice Ann Chandler and husband James of Rotonda West, Florida; Fred Lynn and wife Ellen of Mancelona, Michigan; Timothy Chris and wife Gail of Riverside, California; and Kerry Gene of Edgerton, Ohio; his step sons Mike Cogell and wife Paula of Flower Mound, Texas, and Dan Cogell and wife Julie of Springfield, Missouri, and their sons Austin and Grant of Texas, and Cedric, Christopher and Joshua of Missouri who affectionately referred to Larry as 'Grumpy.' He is also survived by several nephews and nieces, aunts and uncles. Larry enjoyed researching Vonalt family history and participating in Cummins family gatherings.
With the support of Phelps County Regional Medical Center Hospice, Larry was able to stay at home up to the last day of his final stage of laryngeal cancer. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Larry P. Vonalt Scholarship in the Department of English and Technical Communication at UMR. A memorial service will be held in Rolla at a later date, followed by a burial ceremony at Maple Hill Cemetery in New Harmony, Indiana. Arrangements and cremation are being handled by Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla, Missouri.

Kenneth Stevens
(1921 - 2005)

Kenneth Stevens, 84, of Bryan, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, in the emergency room of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, Bryan.
Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Princess, Ky., he was the son of May (Brown) and William Stevens. He married Sally Mae Clark, and she preceded him in death.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was employed as a cement finisher his entire working career. He was a member of the American Legion.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. David (Kathy) Tracy of Sylvania and Mrs. Scott (Tammy) Shubert of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Bob (and wife, Debbie) Stevens of Sylvania, Dave (Debbie) Stevens of Toledo and Russ (Joan) Stevens of Tulsa, Okla.; stepdaughters, Mrs. Ron (Rita) Miller of Bryan, Mrs. Steve (Diana) Wolwhend of Illinois, Rhonda Wilson of Bryan, Kathy (Ray) Moyers of Queen Creek, Ariz., Mrs. Darrell (Bonnie) Black of Colorado, Mrs. Tom (Connie) Martin of Lethonia, Ga. and Mrs. Terry (Sally) Self of Chino Valley, Ariz.; stepsons, Charles V. (Charlene) Malherbe, Jr., of Peyson, Ariz. and Louis (Donna) Malherbe, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Doug (Tracy) Williamson, of Montpelier, along with 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charlie (Marg) Myers of Grass Lake, Mich., and Mrs. Dwayne (Bea) Maxon of Jackson, Mich. Preceding him in death, in addition to his wife, were a grandson, Brian Stevens; two great-grandchildren, Ashton Emmenecker and Zoe Kaylynn Tinkel; six brothers, Buck, Jim, William 'June,' Ed, Ernie and Donnie Stevens; two sisters, Doris Stevens and Betty Stevens.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in Krill Funeral Home, Bryan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Krill Funeral Home, Bryan, with Minister David Tracy, officiating. Graveside committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Oakwood Cemetery, Grass Lake, Mich.
Memorials may be given to the Bryan Senior Center.
