Carol Darnell, active at Elder and Mercy
Carol Darnell, 53, of Mack, died Monday morning at her home. She had been battling pancreatic cancer for the past year.
"She was a very, very special lady," said her daughter, Jennifer Dermody.
Mrs. Darnell was a secretary at Xavier University and was active in the music and theater programs at Elder and Mercy high schools, where hundreds of students grew up calling her "Mom."
She leaves her husband, Tom, a teacher at Elder; sons, Timothy and Scott; and another daughter, Rebecca Darnell, all of Mack; a brother, Jay Wagner, of Taylor Mill, Ky.; and a grandchild.

John A. Ventre Sr., businessman
John A. Ventre Sr., 64, of Covedale, who opened Cincinnati's first pizza parlor 46 years ago and went on to a successful insurance career, died Monday.
Mr. Ventre was the second youngest of 11 children born in the United States to Italian immigrants Rose Ann and Joseph Ventre. He served in the Air Force during the
Korean War.
Along with brothers Carmen and Jerry, Mr. Ventre founded Cincinnati's first pizza parlor, the Pizza Pantry, on Walnut Street near the Metropolitan Hotel in 1951.
He co-owned the Assured Driving School, one of the first registered in the state of Ohio. Mr. Ventre also was an owner of the Grand Prix Motorcycle Shop in Western Hills and was an original partner in the Columbo Room Italian restaurant on Beechmont Avenue.
He worked 19 years for Western-Southern Life Insurance Co. and 15 years as an independent broker. "His charm, wit and spontaneous instinct for reading people made him the best salesman many have ever known," said family members.
Mr. Ventre was a volunteer football and baseball coach for St. Antoninus School and began the "Main Event" fund-raiser for the parish's annual festival.
He loved to play golf and shot two holes-in-one.
Mr. Ventre leaves his wife of 42 years, Mary Jo; sons John Jr., Nicholas, Joseph, Stephen and Michael; daughters Gina Harbison, Lisa Ventre and Carol Lay; sisters Gilda Meehan, Mathilda Fischer and Patricia Jacimine; and 23 grandchildren.
Mass: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Antoninus Church, Western Hills. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Westwood.

William Alan White, 67, retired principal of Georgetown's Alverda Reed Elementary School, died Tuesday.
Mr. White, of Georgetown, was an Army veteran who also taught in the New Richmond schools.

William R. Bogart, architect and senior-citizen advocate
Before ramps for the handicapped were commonplace, William R. Bogart included them in his architectural designs.
Before computers became a business necessity, Mr. Bogart used them to help build a multimillion-dollar agency for the elderly.
"He's always been kind of a visionary," said his wife, Judith. "His whole purpose in life was trying to do everything he could to make Cincinnati an even better city."
Mr. Bogart, an architect and long-time advocate for senior citizens. He was 69.
The Miami University graduate's commercial and residential designs often included ramps, easy-access entrances and other features intended to accommodate the elderly and disabled.
In 1973, Mr. Bogart became executive director of the Area Agency on Aging.
He established a five-county computer network that provided immediate information about all agencies serving the elderly. Mr. Bogart also served as national president of the Urban Elderly Coalition, was a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 1981 and was selected as one of Cincinnati's most influential people in 1988.
He also leaves his son, John, of Villa Park, Calif.; daughter, Traci Bogart-Higgins, of Moore, S.C., and a grandson.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Unitarian Church, Avondale.

Dr. Remo J. DiSalvo, cardiologist
Dr. Remo J. DiSalvo, 75, a retired director of adult medicine for Group Health Associates, died Sept. 10 while vacationing in Italy.
Dr. DiSalvo retired in 1991, having served as a physician with Group Health Associates for 14 years. He also was a former vice president of Union Central Life Insurance Co.
He was former chief of cardiology at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center for six years. He published several scientific papers on hypertension and respiratory functions, and was a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He was named to the Marlon Blankenhorn Society, an honor society.
Dr. DiSalvo was an accomplished musician, specializing in classical and jazz guitar and piano.
He leaves his wife, Elizabeth Jane Connelly DiS alvo; sons Thomas, John and Ray; daughter, Mary Foster; mother, Giovannina DaPilla DiSalvo; and six grandchildren.
