For that effort, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt invited them to have Sunday dinner at the White House.

During World War II, the couple lived in Detroit and worked for the United Auto Workers Union, moving to Clifton in 1948 where she was active in Girl Scouts and the Charter Party.
For many year, Mrs. Sweet shared her home on Woolper Avenue with UC students. Among her more notable guests were Spanish poet Luis Maristany and Austrian cellist Julius Berger. Berger sent her a ticket to his concert at the Salzburg Music Festival and an invitation to go with him afterwards to hear him play for the queen of Denmark.
Over the years, Mrs. Sweet was active in the Cincinnati Teachers Union, Camp Joy, the Women's City Club, Noonday, The Center for Peace Education, the ACLU, the advisory committee of the Otto Armleder Memorial Trust and St. John's.
