Randy Sowards, Knothole baseball coach
Randy Sowards believed that children learned the values of hard work, determination and competition through sports.
The Knothole baseball coach and the former director of the South Kenton Youth Football program in Northern Kentucky died Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati of injuries from an accident. The Independence, Ky., resident was 40.
"He felt kids need a role model, and I think one of the things that maybe frustrated him the most . . . was if he'd see parents drop off a kid and not even see the game," said his wife, Diane Sowards.
Mr. Sowards attended Morehead State University and in 1977 went to work for CSX Railroad, where he was a railcar inspector.
He also leaves a son, Sam, and brother, Chuck Sowards, of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Independence Christian Church. Visitation: 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Longtime Cincinnati Public Schools teacher Thomas J. "Mitch" Mitchell III, 64, of Bridgetown, died Wednesday.
Mr. Mitchell taught at Woodward, Aiken and Hughes high schools. A member of the Xavier University baseball team from 1952-55, he later served as Hughes' baseball coach.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers and was active in Project Business with Junior Achievement.
He belonged to the St. Al's Old Timers Softball Team and was a member of the Archbishop Purcell Council 2798 Knights of Columbus and the River Squares square dancing club. Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Green Township Democratic Club and received a Cincinnati mayoral proclamation for his work with young people.
He leaves his wife, Marion Glandorf Mitchell; daughters, Maria Mitchell of Westwood, Amy Freese of O'Fallon, Ill., Michelle Zulli of Colerain Township, and Nancy Wagner of St. Louis; a son, Thomas J. Mitchell IV of Mt. Lookout; a sister, Alice Blank of Colerain Township; and five grandchildren.

Hymn writer was known worldwide
Omer Westendorf, 81, the Cincinnati man who wrote hymns that have become a standard part of modern Roman Catholic church services around the world, died Wednesday in his Covedale home.
Westendorf was internationally known for lyrics that gave expression to the liturgical reforms in the Catholic Church following the Second Vatican Council.
One of Mr. Westendorf's best-known hymns was "The Gift of Finest Wheat."
Survivors include a daughter, Monica, of Columbus, and sons, Randy and Kirk, both of Covedale.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Monday at Vitt, Stermer & Anderson Funeral Home, 4619 Delhi Pike, Delhi Township. Mass: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, 1798 Queen City Ave., South Fairmount.

C.R. Haegele reassembled organ
Charles R. Haegele volunteered to help reassemble the historic Mathias-Schwab organ, piece by piece, when it was moved in 1969 to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington from a Walton, Ky., church.
The painstaking job took several months and won him a letter of appreciation from Covington's bishop.
"He always told us that when he died to put that in his pocket so that when he got to heaven, he'd show it and surely get in," said daughter Beverly Drye of Highland Heights.
Mr. Haegele died Thursday at his Covington home. He was 89.
Mr. Haegele and his wife Louise had nine children. He supported his family as a carpenter for the Central Trust Building in Cincinnati.
Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cathedral Basilica. Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Memorials are suggested to the cathedral, or St. Joseph the Worker, Walton.
