John O'Hara, sat on Kentucky high court
John "Jay" O'Hara, a former Kentucky Supreme Court Justice and Kenton County prosecutor honored as the state's Outstanding Lawyer of the Year in 1997, died Sunday at his home in Edgewood. He was 75.
Colleagues called him "tough, fair, meticulous and gruff." Friends called him a man dedicated to his family and profession.
Mr. O'Hara was the commonwealth attorney in Kenton County for 18 years after being elected in 1958.
In 1982, he was appointed to the Kentucky Supreme Court but was not elected to another term. After his service on the Supreme Court, Ms. O'Hara returned to private practice and spent a total 48 years as an attorney.
Mr. O'Hara thought pursuing justice should be a full-time occupation and lobbied hard to make the commonwealth attorney's office a full-time position in larger counties.
The state has since extended Mr. O'Hara's idea to smaller counties.
Mr. O'Hara and his wife, Dottie, were married for 51 years. The couple has seven children and 11 grandchildren.
