Harriet Janszen, of Good Samaritan
Harriet Janszen, longtime director of public relations for Good Samaritan Hospital and a tireless volunteer there, died Tuesday after battling cancer for nearly a decade.
"I think what made her special was she was absolutely selfless," said Sister Myra James, the hospital's chief executive officer. "Her idea was: 'What can I do for you? How can I help you?' I think her attitude toward life was joy and one of real dedication to the poor, the underserved and the people no one cared about."
She worked closely and enthusiastically with many reporters. "Harriet gained the respect of all of us both for her competence and her sheer goodness," former Post associate editor James L. Adams wrote in 1989.
Ms. Janszen began her career at Good Samaritan in 1957 as director of the volunteer program. In 1963, she became director of public relations - a position she held for 20 years. In 1983 she was named assistant to the president.
Among the University of Cincinnati graduate's honors were the 1986 Outstanding Communicator Award from Women in Communications and the National Conference of Christians and Jews' Community Service Award. Among her affiliations were the Cincinnati Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and Women in Communications.
Ms. Janszen assisted senior citizens and the underprivileged at the Clifton Senior Multi-Service Center, the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and the Pleasant Ridge Community Council. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Ruth Tabor's values rooted in family farm
Ruth Baker Tabor died Tuesday, quietly and with dignity. And with her passing, a rural way of life came a step closer to vanishing from Fairfield.
The second-generation homestead where Mrs. Tabor and her late husband, Charles, farmed and raised a family was an unassuming landmark on Gilmore Road. It's gone now, a footnote to industrial development. Only the nearby Gilmore Ponds Conservancy preserves a landscape that once yielded arrowheads with every turn of the plow.
"She was a friend to everyone she ever met, a good Christian woman," said her son, Keith, of Fairfield. "We did a lot of hard work together. But she never got down."
Mrs. Tabor, 82, who was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, also leaves son Kenneth, of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren. Another son, Charles Jr., preceded her in death.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Webb-Noonan Funeral Home, Hamilton. Visitation: noon Thursday at the funeral home.
