Milton Hader, of hardware family
Milton Hader not only helped run the family hardware business, he knew how to use the hardware he sold.
"He was a real fix-it man," said his daughter, Marilyn Hader. "He liked to tell me, 'For every bolt, there is a nut. For every nut, there is a wrench. That's how you know how to fix it.' "
Mr. Hader suffered a heart attack Saturday on a Panama Canal cruise with his wife, Virginia, and was flown to a Miami hospital, where he suffered a stroke and died Sunday.
The Green Township resident would have been 80 years old today.
Mr. Hader and his brother, Jim, were the third generation to operate the stores started by their grandfather, John, in 1888 in Cheviot. Although the Hader family is no longer involved in the business, the 15 stores retain the Hader Hardware name.
Milton Hader also was a history buff who researched the history of church hymns.
"A number of groups had him trace the origin of hymns," said Ms. Hader. "He loved doing it, and he compiled a big collection of hymnals."
Mr. Hader also was a self-taught Civil War historian, an avid gardener and member of Westwood United Methodist Church. "He loved his church and enjoyed singing in the choir," said Ms. Hader. "He was very involved in Wesley Hall, a Methodist nursing home for the indigent."
Mr. Hader volunteered at Sharon Woods Historic Village, belonged to the Kiwanis Club and helped organize the annual Harvest Home Fair.
Besides his wife, brother and daughter, Mr. Hader leaves sons, John and David, and four grandchildren.
