Business, civic leader John Magro
brought opera to life for Cincinnati
John L. Magro was a prominent businessman and president of companies, but his passion was music, especially opera.
Mr. Magro, 91, died Saturday in Camden, Maine, where he had moved from Cincinnati in 1992.
A 1932 graduate of Harvard, Mr. Magro formed his own advertising company and later became president of Candle-Lite Co., director of Dextra Sugar Corp. and president of Doro d'Italia. He served on the boards of several civic and cultural organizations, including the National Ballet Theatre Foundation, the American Ballet Theatre, the Cincinnati Park Board, and the Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority. He was co-chairman of the Cincinnati chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
In 1946, Mr. Magro joined the board of the Cincinnati Opera, where he later became board president and general manager. He is credited with reviving opera in Cincinnati and making its Summer Opera Association one of the best in the country. Mr. Magro managed at least 60 grand operas for the company and several recordings.
Mr. Magro co-founded the American Opera Auditions and, in 1961, received one of Italy's highest civilian awards for outstanding efforts in furthering Italian-American relations and in launching singers in their careers.
"People are not always aware of everything he did. He was very humble," said Mr. Magro's daughter, Victoria Pfeil, of Cincinnati. "He was president and director of all these things, but he was very real. He had a way of interacting with all people in a very loving way."
He also leaves his wife, Nancy P. Magro; other children, Susan Pfeil of New Canaan, Conn., Jonathan Magro of Cincinnati, Nancy Magro of Brookline, Mass., and Benjamin Magro of Union, Maine; a sister, Mary Wilder of Harper's Ferry, W.Va.; and nine grandchildren.
