Louise Davey, operatic singer and teacher

Louise Kleve Davey was a graduate of the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, Germany, and a successful opera singer before she turned to children and teaching.

Mrs. Davey studied piano and voice and earned a bachelor of music degree from the conservatory. She sang operatic roles in Germany before returning to Cincinnati to sing opera at the zoo under Fausto Cleva as La Cieca in "La Gioconda."

She also sang in the May Festival, some Wagnerian parts at Music Hall under the direction of Eugene Goossens as well as at many other musical events.

Mrs. Davey died Tuesday at University Hospital. She was 87.

After returning to Cincinnati, she did volunteer work with children at Girls' Town and pursued a master's degree in education at the University of Cincinnati and began teaching at St. Ignatius School.

She also taught at Washington Park School when it was a demonstration school. Later in her career, she taught conversational French and German and other language arts at Cheviot School.

Mrs. Davey, who was born in Westwood, graduated from St. Ursula Academy and from the College of the Sacred Heart in Clifton.

She retired from teaching in 1978 and became active in the Town Club, Westwood Women's Club, Clifton Music Club, West Hills Music Club, MacDowell Society, English Speaking Union, American Guild of Organists and Cincinnati Travel Club.

She leaves a sister, Sylvia Sheblessy, and a brother, Karl Kleve, both of Cincinnati.

Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Westwood. Visitation: 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements: Miller-Busse & Borgmann Funeral Home. Memorials: Glenmary Home Missions.

Milton Bloom, 91, bar leader

Milton M. Bloom, 91, a former Cincinnati Bar Association president and law professor, died Tuesday. He had been a partner in the law firm, Long & Bloom.

He was a graduate of University of Cincinnati Law School and taught at Salmon P. Chase College of Law, when it was at UC. He also was a former president of the UC Law School Alumni.

He is survived by his wife Helen K. Bloom; a daughter, Susan Trentkamp; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great grandchildren.

Services were today at Weil Funeral Home. Friends may call on the family at the residence of Susan Trentkamp Saturday and Sunday evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Daniel McElroy, 80, carpenter

Daniel Richard McElroy, who installed the system that moves the blue seats in Cinergy Field and also had worked on the bleachers in Crosley Field with his father, died Saturday at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood.

At 80, he was the oldest card-carrying Carpenter Union member in southwestern Ohio.

"He enjoyed the union. There was a real brotherhood there," said his son, Mark McElroy of Rochester, N.Y., about the man who worked as a union organizer from 1952 to 1960 in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, and served as president of a millwright carpenters' local in the late 1970s.

Mr. McElroy was born July 27, 1917, in downtown Cincinnati and grew up on the West Side. The World War II Army recipient of the Purple Heart served in Belgium, France and Germany, and was one of the first soldiers to liberate Germany's Buchenwald concentration camp.

He served as a white officer in the war's mostly black Red Ball Express trucking unit and also served with the Third Army, his son said. He was a member of the Retired Army Officers Association and Carpenter Union Local 1066. In 1990 he retired from his second career of five years, as a tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service.

On June 5 he celebrated the 52nd anniversary of his wedding to Mary Lou (Fenner) McElroy.

In addition to his wife and son, he also is survived by daughter Barbara McElroy of Western Hills; son Dennis McElroy of Salt Lake City, Utah; and grandson Daniel Robert McElroy.

Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harry Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, 4989 Glenway Ave. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church.

Civic leader Rev. Tecumseh Graham

The Rev. Tecumseh X. Graham, a former Cincinnati Public School Board president and Cincinnati City Council member, died Sunday at age 73.

A civic leader during the 1970s, the retired pastor of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Corryville also was a director of the Council of Christian Communions.

Since retiring, the Washington, D.C., native has received several community honors, including being named an African American Lion by the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati and receiving the Charles P. Taft Award for outstanding contributions to ecumenism from the Council of Christian Communions.

Rev. Graham was a graduate of Hood Theological Seminary and Livingstone College.

While on the school board, he helped appoint black principals in high schools and to include black history in the regular curriculum.

He moved to City Hall, replacing former Democrat James Cissell in 1978. He lost a re-election bid in 1979.

A former vice chairman of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Rev. Graham also taught at both the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.

He leaves his wife, Loreda; son, Tecumseh X. Graham Jr., of Houston, Texas ; daughter, Marjorie Graham Henry of Cincinnati; brother, D'Anthony Graham of Middleburg, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Visitation: 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, with services at 11 a.m. Memorials: the church, the American Caner Society or American Diabetes. Association. Arrangements: Renfro Funeral Service.
