Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Virginia Kunz (formerly Sister Jerome Marie), pastoral care director at Mother Margaret Hall and Bayley Place nursing homes, died Friday at Mother Margaret Hall. She was 58.

She celebrated 40 years as a Sister of Charity in September.

"Sister Virginia Kunz was a deeply spiritual person who was in love with the Lord and who saw Christ in the persons to whom she ministered," said Sister of Charity Claire Foken, a lifelong friend. "She loved life and knew how to enjoy it."

Sister Virginia was an elementary school teacher and principal for 21 years before she assumed pastoral care duties. She recived her bachelor's degree in education from the College of Mount St. Joseph and a master's in education from Xavier University. She taught and was principal in several Ohio schools until the mid-1980's.

In 1983, she completed the clinical pastoral education program at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, and became pastoral care director at Mother Margaret Hall. In 1996, she also assumed pastoral care duties at Bayley Place, the Delhi Township nursing home sponsored by the Sisters of Charity.

Rev. Carl Geers, pastor and missionary

In his life, the Rev. Carl Joseph Geers proved true the maxim that Roman Catholic priests never really retire.

"Even after his retirement, he wanted to continue to serve the church in whatever way he could," said the Rev. James Bramlage, of St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, where Father Geers was last assigned.

Father Geers died Thursday at age 84.

The Norwood native was ordained in 1943 and went on to serve as assistant pastor at parishes in Cincinnati and southwestern Ohio for the next 20 years.

He was assistant chaplain from 1951 to 1955 at the summer camp Fort Scott and taught part-time at Elder High School. Upon being named associate pastor at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in 1983, Father Geers began to pursue a lifelong interest in missionary work.

He sought permission to permanently live and work in Grenada in the West Indies but had to be airlifted in 1983 after U.S. armed forces invaded that island.

According to nephew Ric Calme, Father Geers recently told family members, "The Mass and the Lord are the center of my life."

Carl R. Osborn Sr., left legacy of values

Carl Russell Osborn Sr. spent a lot of time visiting his son, Cincinnati Post photographer James W. "Jim" Osborn.

The younger Osborn, who has won many professional awards during a 20-year career at The Post, attributes his work ethic to his father, who left school in the ninth-grade during the Depression to work on the family farm in Ashley, Ohio.

"He gave me my sense of values as far as what's right and what's wrong," Jim Osborn said.

"He always told me, "If you are going to do something, do it right the first time. Don't do it halfway.' I try to pass that on to my own kids."

Carl Osborn, 79, of Houcktown, Ohio, died Monday at Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy, Ohio.

Mr. Osborn was retired from National Lime & Stone Co. He also worked for Findlay & Mt. Blanchard Landmark and was a member of the Houcktown United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Jean Shaffer, two brothers and four sisters.

Jim Osborn was the first of Mr. Osborn's children to attend college, and the elder Osborn was a proud father on graduation day, his son said.

"I remember him grinning from ear-to-ear. He said, "You know I love you, don't you?' " Jim Osborn said.

Mr. Osborn was a quiet man who was slow to anger. However, he wasn't afraid to express his opinions and taught his children to do the same.

"The biggest thing is my dad never quit. He was extremely competitive," Jim Osborn said.

"I owe an awful lot to him. The older he got, the closer we grew. I was holding his hand when he died. I'm glad I was there with him."

Mr. Osborn also leaves sons Michael A. Osborn of Piqua, Ohio, and Carl R. Osborn of Findlay; daughters, Virginia Irene Osborn and Sarah J. Osborn of Findlay; sisters, Minnie Redden of Columbus, Ohio, and Grace Cramer, Vera Osborn and Daisy Osborn, all of Ashley, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials: Muscular Dystrophy Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, 2421 Edgehill Road, Toledo, Ohio, 43615; or Houcktown United Methodist Church, 15931 County Road 8, Findlay, Ohio, 45840.
