Brown County's John L. Cooper, loved history, foxhounds, work
John L. Cooper, a sixth-generation resident of Brown County who strived to keep his family's traditions alive, died Wednesday at the age of 68.
Mr. Cooper's ancestors, William and Mary Richmond Cooper, arrived in Brown County in 1812 with a horse, wagon and 12 children.
Mr. Cooper, who was born near Aberdeen, collected family history such as a nose ring from a Native American who killed one of his ancestors.
He also followed the family's longtime practices of raising tobacco and foxhounds.
'He raised tobacco up until about two years ago when he was unable to and he fox-hunted until he couldn't do it no more,' said Brown County Sheriff Windell Crawford, a friend who spoke with Mr. Cooper daily.
'He loved his foxes and he loved to work.'
Mr. Cooper worked for 38 years as a Pepsi-Cola salesman in Brown County. His customers trusted him so much that they did not recount the number of bottles in his deliveries and often left him keys to their stores, family members said.
'You don't see that in 1998,' said son John David Cooper, who lives in Ripley. 'He just had a real high level of trust with people.'
Since his retirement in 1992, Mr. Cooper worked as weights and measures inspector for the Brown County auditor's office. He had served in the Army during the
Korean War and was a member of the Courts-Fussnecker American Legion Post 367. He also belonged to Ripley Church of Christ, the Brown County Democratic Party and the Eagle Creek Beagle Club.
Mr. Cooper died in his sleep at home after a long bout with diabetes., heart disease and prostate cancer.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Carol Hicks Cooper; three daughters, Gaynor Pfeffer of Columbus, Wendy Cooper of Cincinnati and Jackie Cooper of Flemingsburg, Ky.; four grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Cooper of Ripley and three sisters, Frances Bowling of Winchester, Jean Faulconer of Goshen and Bernice Reynolds of Bethel. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sharon Griffith.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, at Cahall Funeral Home, Ripley. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials: Ripley Life Square or to the American Cancer Society.
