Byron Holley, aerospace engineer

Byron J. Holley, retired aerospace engineer, died Tuesday at his home in Anderso n Township. He was 80.

As an aerospace engineer, Holley worked at the General Electric Co. here as well as with McDonnell-Douglas Co. in Titusville, Fla., and the Department of Defense in Orlando, Fla., and was involved with the development of the Tomahawk Cruise Missile, the F-15 aircraft, the space shuttle and most recently the Stealth bomber, the most advanced aircraft built to date.

He was a veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. He received a degree in industrial management from Ohio State University, studied engineering at the University of Cincinnati and received a master's degree in business administration from Xavier University.

He was a member of numerous professional associations, including the Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He also was a member of the Toastmasters Interna tional and the Disabled American Veterans.

"My father believed there was no excuse for giving less than 100 percent, either in your job duties or to your family," said a daughter, Debrah Bay.

Holley was a member of the Anderson Hills United Methodist Church for more than 30 years.

In addition to Ms. Bay, Holley leaves his wife, Georgia Douglas Holley; a son, Robert Holley; another daughter, Sharon Holley, both of Anderson Township, and a sister, Geraldine McCann.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mount Washington . Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice.

Daniel W. Martin, expert in acoustics
Daniel W. Martin, 80, of Anderson Township, who dedicated his life to music and acoustical engineering, died at home Thursday.

With a doctorate in physics from the University of Illinois, Dr. Martin earned 25 patents related to musical acoustics and helped engineer the sound design of more than 350 theaters, churches and auditoriums.

He helped engineer the acoustics for Music Hall in Cincinnati, Corbett Auditorium and the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and Christ Episcopal Church, downtown.

Mr. Martin spent eight years at Radio Corporation of America developing microphones, headsets

and communication systems. Then he worked at Baldwin Piano & Organ Co., where he rose to the position of director of engineering and research.

An elder in the Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church, Mr. Martin also served as national president of Presbyterian Men and was a tenor staff soloist at various Presbyterian churches for 25 years.He leaves his wife, Martha; daughters, Mary Kilpatrick of Wooster and Nancy Glasgow of Iowa; and son, Dr. David Martin of North Carolina.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at T. P. White & Sons Funeral Home, Mount Washington .

Elizabeth Gast, linguist and animal advocate
Elizabeth Hilton Gast loved people, languages, family and animals.

'My mother's love of animals was surpassed only by her deep and genuine love and concern for

other people,' said her son, Matthew Gast.

Mrs. Gast, of East Walnut Hills, died Tuesday after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 47.

The native Cincinnatian attended the Lotspeich School and graduated from the Hillsdale School in 1969. She graduated from Skidmore College in 1973 with a degree in linguistics.

She traveled extensively and lived in Europe through the Experiment in International Living. She graduated from the Interpreters' School in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1975.

Mrs. Gast was fluent in numerous languages and tutored students in German, French, Italian and Russian. Her husband, William C. Gast, is leasing manager at McCluskey Chevrolet.

She was executive assistant at the Red Bank Veterinary Clinic and was a member of the Raise and Release Program, which cares for injured and orphaned animals before their return to the wild.

Mrs. Gast supported the Seven Hills School and was a member and president of the Parent Association Board.

She also leaves her parents, Robert and Mathilde Hilton Jr.; brother David of Eugene, Ore.; and sister, Melissa of Cincinnati.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Redeemer, Hyde Park. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today at Elden A. Good Funeral Home, Hyde Park. Memorials: American Cancer Society.
