Robert L. Ross, leading minority business owner
Robert L. Ross, 59, founder of a leading minority-owned business and part-owner of seven radio stations, died Thursday at home.
A native of Brandon, Miss., Mr. Ross created Penquin Painters Inc. with his wife, Lovie, in 1985. The firm worked on projects such as the Aronoff Center, the Procter & Gamble Healthcare Research Center in Mason and the Grand Victoria casino in Rising Sun, Ind.
The couple also are part-owners of Blue Chip Broadcasting, which operates radio stations in Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville and Lexington. Locally, the corporation owns WIZF.
'He is the quintessential self-made man,' said Mrs. Ross about her husband. 'He came from rural Mississippi with nothing at the age of 14 and grew to head up a multi-million-dollar business and be part owner of another multi-million-dollar business.'
When he was first starting his contracting business in the mid-1980s, Mr. Ross joined the Quinn Chapel AME Church of Forest Park, where he later served as vice chairman of the trustees. He was co-chair of the church's building committee when it completed a new $2.5 million sanctuary and family life center.
'He was instrumental in guiding the church through the perilous territory of building a church,' said the Rev. Donald Jordan, former pastor at Quinn Chapel. 'He was also a leader by his own financial giving. He had a commitment to the church.'
Mr. Ross leaves his wife, Lovie Ross; three sons: Andre and Stanley Ross of Cincinnati and Michael Johnson of St. Elizabeth, Mo.; two daughters: Kimberly Ross and Nandea Lewis, of Cincinnati; one brother, Charles Ross of Cincinnati; and three sisters: Jessie Jones of Milwaukee, Elizabeth Jordan and Cora Edwards, of Cincinnati.
