Winkler Goodman, businessman, storyteller
Winkler W. Goodman, a retired businessman who installed fireproofing at the White House during Harry Truman's presidency, died of heart failure last week in Cincinnati. The North Avondale resident was 86.
'He was a superb teller of stories and jokes and always had a tremendous supply at hand to entertain whoever was near,' said his brother, Al Goodman, of Tampa, Fla. 'Everyone liked Wink, and he was always at the center of any social gathering.'
In the 1940s, Mr. Goodman founded the Chemical Fireproofing Co., which eventually had offices in Cleveland, St. Louis, Silver Spring, Md., and Chicago.
'They did work for restaurants and companies that had grease or other flammables build up in their internal ducts,' said David Hathaway, Mr. Goodman's lawyer and longtime friend. 'They went in and cleaned these out and fireproofed them. This was not a clean job. But it was something no one else wanted to do. And he became very successful.'
Mr. Goodman enjoyed flying himself from one division to another in the company airplane. In the early 1980s he sold the company, now Delta Industrial Cleaning Inc., in Pleasant Ridge.
Mr. Goodman loved reciting poetry and telling the stories of author O. Henry. He graduated from Hughes High School in 1929. During the Depression, after two years of college, he went to work. His wife, the late Hortense Frank Goodman, worked with him for more than two decades.
A Mason and member of Montgomery Lodge 94, Mr. Goodman supported numerous charities, including hospice centers, Jewish organizations, the American Cancer Society and the Nature Conservancy. Just a few days before his death he bundled newspapers for a recycling drive in his neighborhood.
He was the father of the late Robert B. Goodman. Other survivors include son Gary F. Goodman, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and three grandchildren.
