Joan Patterson Witten, Red Cross volunteer
Joan Patterson Witten of Hyde Park, a driver for the Red Cross for more than 10 years, died Friday. She was 73.
She was active in the Junior League and served on the board of Planned Parenthood and the Cerebral Palsy Association and was a volunteer for many years at Krohn Conservatory. She also was a member of Christ Church Cathedral where she served as an officer of the Altar Guild, organizing service assignments for members. She had similar responsibilities for the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Community, where she lived.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel Witten; a daughter, Carol W. Brennan of Madison, Conn.; a son, Daniel M. Witten II; a brother, Donald M. Patterson of Leland, Mich.; a sister, Janet P. Raymond of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ Church Cathedral, Fourth and Sycamore, Cincinnati. Elden A. Good Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Alberta Schmid, nurse at Christ Hospital
Alberta C. Schmid was a "nurse's nurse."
"She was tops in her profession," said Arlene Corsaw, a nurse and friend of Ms. Schmid for more than 50 years. "She was a dedicated nurse in every way. She was always on the giving end, always taking care of people, always helping people."
Ms. Schmid, 84, of College Hill, who was a Christ Hospital department head from 1948 until her retirement in 1977, died Saturday.
A member of the family that operated Schmid Bakery in Northside for 97 years, Ms. Schmid graduated from DePauw University in 1937 and from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in 1940. During World War II, she was an Army captain and served as a nurse in France. She also taught practical nurses. "She was an excellent teacher," said Ms. Corsaw.
Ms. Schmid also enjoyed cooking, reading, playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. She was a whiz at crosswords, and "wouldn't start the day until she got her crossword puzzle done," Ms. Corsaw said. Survivors include several cousins.
Funeral services will be at the convenience of friends and relatives. Charles A. Miller funeral home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Alberta C. Schmid Scholarship Fund, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, 600 N. Wolfe St., Baltimore, Md., 21205.

Jane Callaghan, church, civic volunteer
Jane Thompson Callaghan, a Finneytown marriage and family counselor and avid volunteer, died Saturday. She was 71.
Mrs. Callaghan was a talented artist who exhibited in several Greater Cincinnati galleries during the 1970s. She was active in the College Hill Presbyterian Church for more than 40 years, teaching Sunday school, the Bethel Bible series and an adult session course on self esteem, which she developed.
After the death of her husband, Cal Callaghan, she turned to community work. She volunteered her time to the Krohn Conservatory, to Christ Hospital as a patient liaison, and served as chairman of the gallery aides of the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Mrs. Callaghan leaves a son, Bryant Callaghan of Wyoming; daughters, Tracey Mattox of Pleasant Ridge and Cindy Whitley of Geneva, Ill.; sisters, LeMoine Baker of Upper Arlington, Ohio, and Eileen Shimp of Corona, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

Sister Dorothy Steiner, had 52-year ministry
Sister of Charity of Cincinnati and teacher Dorothy Steiner often told friends that she had wanted to be a nun for as long as she could remember.
Sister Dorothy, 70, who taught school, worked in offices and was a Sister of Charity for 52 years, died Sunday. She once wrote that "the happiest occasion she experienced was the day she pronounced her final vows."
She also is being remembered for her love of the American West, love for sports and sense of humor. Sister Dorothy taught elementary school in Colorado and Ohio and served in hospitals in New Mexico, Colorado and California. In 1958, she worked in the office at Seton High School. She retired to Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in 1985.
She leaves a sister, Catherine Compton-Audette, of Arizona. Mass was today.
