Edwin J. Menninger, beloved Reds usher
Edwin J. Menninger was known as the Harry Caray of Cincinnati.
Mr. Menninger, who ushered at Cincinnati Reds games after his retirement as a pipe fitter, led fans in his section in singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch. It echoed the tradition set by the late baseball announcer Caray at Chicago's Wrigley Field.
Mr. Menninger, 88, of Mount Washington, died Sunday.
Mr. Menninger attended Elder High School and took labor relations classes at Xavier University. He was married to the late Margaret Rose Klopp for 54 years.
In his early years, Mr. Menninger was a maintenance man and engineer at the Kroger Co.'s manufacturing plant on State Avenue. He helped keep the plant running during World War II so food could be manufactured for the war effort.
In 1948, he began work as a pipe fitter and, after retiring in 1977, started ushering at Riverfront Stadium, Riverfront Coliseum and Cincinnati Gardens.
At Reds' games, he often would be pictured on the scoreboard video screen as he led the fans in song. During the second game of the 1990 World Series, he was pictured on national television during the seventh inning stretch.
Mr. Menninger retired from ushering at the age of 83. Fans who regularly sat in his section often chanted, "Eddie, Eddie."
He leaves daughters Peggy Nusekabel of Cincinnati and Karen Lapsis of Colchester, Conn.; and sons Richard Menninger of Bernardsville, N.J., and Karl Menninger of Carbondale, Ill.
