Elvera Radford, longtime political activist

Elvera Radford, a veteran Democratic activist and former executive director of the Hamilton County Board of Elections, died Monday at her home at Seasons Retirement Community in Kenwood. She was 82.

The longtime Democratic 14th ward chairperson's expertise and experience led candidates to call her "Mother Radford" for her help in guiding them through the often complex election process.

"She helped so many candidates start off their political life and helped guide them through their original campaigns," recalled her daughter, Betty Radford Fox. "She worked so hard for (former City Council Member) Pete Strauss and (former state representative) Terry Tranter and (judge) Bob Gorman and the Lukens and so many, many more.

"She had a wonderful life and that's what she said just the other day. She was the most fabulous woman I ever met. She loved her family. And of course she loved politics," her daughter said.

Mrs. Radford, who began work at the elections board as a clerk in 1965, was a homemaker and mother of three when she first became interested in politics in 1941 after a neighbor asked her to staff a polling booth.

In 1963, her husband, the late Larry Radford, was disabled and Mrs. Radford took a job with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

She went to the board of elections in 1965, became an administrator in 1972 and was promoted to deputy director in 1976. She was named the first woman director of the elections board in 1980.

Mrs. Radford told a Post reporter at the time that she "kept the elections law section of the Ohio Revised Code by my bedside and read it every night."

Mrs. Radford retired from the elections board at 68, in 1985. She continued to be active in the Democratic Party.

She also leaves another daughter, Mary Lynne Hays, of Arlington, Va.; a son, Richard L. Radford, of Milford; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services have not yet been arranged. The Gilligan Funeral Home, Kenwood, is in charge of arrangements.
