Robert J. Fogarty, newspaperman
Robert J. Fogarty was a newspaperman through and through - a colorful character with a self-deprecating sense of humor who could handle any story that came his way.
The joking was set aside when he picked up a pen and notebook.
"He took his craft seriously," said former Kenton District Court Judge William Schmaedecke.
"He was absolutely one of the finest reporters I ever knew," added Kenton District Judge Frank Trusty.
Mr. Fogarty, 77, of Cincinnati, died Friday in the Batavia Nursing Home, Batavia, Ohio.
Mr. Fogarty worked for The Kentucky Post in 1963-73 and the Kentucky Enquirer from 1973 until he retired in 1985. He lived in Covington and other Northern Kentucky communities for many years.
The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire court trials were among Mr. Fogarty's most high-profile assignments, but he was equally adept at covering a breaking news story or writing a touching feature about the likes of songwriter Haven Gillespie.
"I've read his stories over in recent years and was impressed by the clarity of his sentences," said a son, John Fogarty of Cincinnati.
Even more than his abilities as a writer and reporter, Mr. Fogarty had a reputation for trustworthiness and fairness.
"He was absolutely fair. He went out of his way to get both sides of a story," Schmaedecke said.
Mr. Fogarty had a fine sense of humor and liked to joke about many things, including his Army unit. But his outfit was in or near the thick of the fighting in Europe during World War II, and he received a number of personal and unit citations. In recent years he was working on a fictionalized account of his Army days named,"Operation Rubber Duck," said his son.
Mr. Fogarty's primary hobby was reading. "Sometimes he would go through three novels in a day," said John Fogarty. He also enjoyed fishing and golf, his son said.
Mr. Fogarty was a member of the Garrard Street Christian Church, Covington, and was a former deacon of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Park. His wife, Peggy Norville Fogarty, died in 1994.
He also leaves sons Paul, of Cincinnati, and David, of Covington; and a granddaughter.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday at the National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. Arrangements: Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Memorials: charity of choice.

Robin Sheets, UC English professor
Robin Ann Lauterbach Sheets, 55, a University of Cincinnati English professor and director of the Center for Women's Studies, died Friday of cancer.
Dr. Sheets arrived at the university in 1972, shortly after receiving both a master's degree and a doctorate in English from Johns Hopkins University. She was the author of book reviews, articles and books and her expertise was in Victorian studies, focusing on the role of women in that era's literature.
"She worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of women around the world," recalled Jim Sheets, her husband of 31 years. "She believed in a just and fair society in every corner of the world so that women could have the same opportunities as men."
Five years ago, she became director of the Center for Women's Studies. The English professor also had worked to create a joint degree - a master's program in women's studies and a J.D. program through the university's College of Law. After developing a relationship with a law center in Botswana in southern Africa, she subsequently sent students there to work on women's rights.
In 1984, Dr. Sheets received UC's highest award for excellence in teaching. She garnered special recognition from the Great Rivers Girl Scout Council earlier this year when she was named "Woman of Distinction."
Dr. Sheets also leaves a daughter, Sara, and son, Alex, both of Cincinnati.
