Father James Brockman, furthered mission of church in Latin America

Father James R. Brockman, S.J., a Cincinnati native and a 1944 graduate of St. Xavier High School, dedicated his life to social justice for the poor, especially Hispanics.

He was a scholar and expert on the life of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was martyred by El Salvadoran military police on March 24, 1980, while he was celebrating Mass.

Father Brockman, 73, died Wednesday in Little Rock, Ark., where he was diocesan director of Hispanic ministry.

The Jesuit priest in 1982 wrote a book on the archbishop, "The Word Remains: A Life of Oscar Romero." The book became the basis of a film, "Romero" in 1989.

"No matter where he was, Father Brockman always had two things on his mind: the state of the Church in Latin America and his call to help the poor," said Father James J. Creighton, S.J., who was a classmate of Father Brockman during their religious studies.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1945-47 and entered the Jesuit novitiate in Milford in 1947. Father Brockman held a bachelor's degree from Xavier University, master's degree from Loyola University Chicago and two degrees from West Baden College in Indiana, where he was ordained in 1960.

In the late 1970s Father Brockman traveled to El Salvador, where he met Archbishop Romero. In 1978 and 1979 several Jesuits and lay people were murdered by military police. After that, the Jesuits and the archbishop openly opposed the ruthless government in El Salvador. Father Brockman returned to the United States in 1981.

Survivors include a sister, Rosann True of Park Ridge, Ill.

Services will be Tuesday in Little Rock. Burial will be in the Milford ( Ohio) Jesuit Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday. A Memorial Mass in Ohio will be announced later.
