Charles Robinson, ex-fireman
Charlene Ventura, YWCA of Cincinnati executive director, remembers her father, Charles J. Robinson, for the lifelong lessons she learned from him:
"My dad taught us how to live, how to love, and he taught us how to laugh. He was a salty old Irishman. He was very, very loved."
Mr. Robinson, 85, died Monday of a heart attack at Mercy Franciscan Hospital in Western Hills after spending two weeks at Western Hills Retirement Community. Ms. Ventura said the family helped care for him the last five years so he could remain independent.
Mr. Robinson's first career was as a Cincinnati firefighter and he rose to the rank of lieutenant. Ms. Ventura said he often told her how he was one of the first to run the life squad when the department had only two ambulances.
His only son, Tim Robinson, said he had a rugged exterior molded in part by his experience growing up in Depression-era Cincinnati.
"He was a kid raised during the Depression on State Avenue," he said. "He was a fireman. He built his own home, physically, in Western Hills, and retired and became a farmer. Then he really went to work ... He was just one of those tough guys but very soft underneath and very loving."
He retired from firefighting at age 57 and bought a place in Rising Sun, Ind., where he began farming. He later returned to Western Hills.
He is survived by his wife, Anna May Robinson of Western Hills, four daughters, Ms. Ventura, Patricia Tarvin, Linda Redington, and Regina Porter, all of Cincinnati; son Tim Robinson of Columbus; a brother, Arthur Robinson of White Oak; two sisters, Regina Lambers and Ruth Borgman; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dalbert & Woodruff Funeral Home in Western Hills. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Clare Church in College Hill. Memorials to the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati.

Virginia Toche, famed ballet dancer
Virginia Toche danced in North America, South America and Europe, performing in ballets, on Broadway, on television, and in Las Vegas. When she danced, the raven-haired beauty went by the name Virginia Poe, a tribute to the distantly-related writer she admired.
She also was known as "Miss Greater Cincinnati of 1948."
"She was very pretty, and also she had the dancing talent," said her sister, Eleanor Clemm of Spring Valley, N.Y.
Mrs. Toche died Monday at her Staten Island, N.Y., home after a six-year struggle against liver cancer.
She was born Oct. 25, 1922 in Cincinnati and graduated from Withrow High School before attending the American Ballet School. She launched her dancing career at the Cincinnati Summer Opera in 1939 and moved to New York in 1942, starring in numerous Broadway shows, including "By Jupiter," " Oklahoma," "Billion Dollar Baby," and "Allegro."
In 1946 she danced with the Col. de Basil Ballets Russes in Rio, Sao Paolo and New York. In 1950, she danced with the Irene Hawthorne Concert Dance Group. She also was with the Folies Bergeres in Madrid and Barcelona.

She worked in night clubs like the Flamingo in Las Vegas, Cal Neva in Lake Tahoe, French Casino in New York, Astoria in Milan, Moulon Rouge in Geneva and the Florida in Brussels. It was at the Florida that she met the man who was to be her husband, Jean Toche, a musician and artist who in 1969 was a founder of the Guerrilla Art Action Group in New York.
The couple married March 11, 1959 in Brussels, but did so secretly, her husband explained, "because in Brussels at that time you needed your parents' permission until you were 27. I was 26."
The couple settled in New York City and from 1970 until her 1981 retirement, she worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst.
She will be privately cremated and buried at sea. She requested no memorial service be held.
