Earl Taylor Wallick, UC professor of biochemistry
Earl Taylor Wallick was recognized worldwide as a leader in his field of heart research, but he was a family man at heart.
Dr. Wallick, of Clifton Heights, died Thursday. He was 62.
"He was always there for us when we needed him," said his son James Lee Wallick of New York City. "He was generous with his time and his energies."
Dr. Wallick was a professor of biochemistry at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He earned a doctorate in pharmacology from Rice University.
He came to Cincinnati in 1977, after having taught at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Acknowledged by his colleagues as a world leader in the study of the sodium-potassium enzyme, he was considered an expert in digitalis and its interaction with that enzyme.
His research, dealing with heart disease at the molecular level, was published in more than 75 articles and papers.
He also was a consultant to the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Wallick also was an accomplished amateur clarinetist.
Other survivors include a son, Karl Taylor Wallick of Philadelphia; a grandson; his mother, LaFran H. Wallick McDaniel of Monticello, Ark.; and a sister, Diane W. Creel of Fairfax, Va.
Services were held Sunday at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home in Monticello, Ark. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Donald Ray Brauning was homicide detective
Donald Ray Brauning Sr. of Delhi Township, a retired Cincinnati Police Division homicide detective, died Friday. He was 69.
Mr. Brauning was a family man who enjoyed spending off-duty time with his children.
"We are a close-knit family," said Dell, his wife of 42 years. "He was a wonderful father. If everyone had a father like him, we would not have the problems we have today."
Mr. Brauning was born in Bond Hill, but was raised in Deer Park, and is a graduate of Purcell High School. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the
Korean War as a radio operator with the 5th Battalion.
He joined the Cincinnati Police Division in 1949, the year he was discharged from the Marines. While working as a police officer, he met his wife at a Frisch's restaurant downtown where she worked, and they married on July 12, 1958.
During his career, he worked for Districts 1 and 5, and the burglary squad, until 1972 when he was promoted to homicide detective. By the time he retired in 1984, he had received 22 letters of commendation.
From 1954 until 1961, he also volunteered as a firefighter in Silverton, where he lived until moving to Delhi years ago.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Donald Ray Jr. of Anderson Township, and Jim Brauning of Delhi Township; four daughters, Sherree Hilvert of New Richmond, Kimberly Ann Kline of Moores Hill, Ind., Sandra Dietrich of Delhi, and Carol Sue Schuerman of Moores Hill, Ind.; one sister, Mary Jane Fritsch of Pleasant Ridge; and 15 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent De Paul Church, 4026 River Road, Delhi. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home at 6550 Neeb Road in Delhi Township with a Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. St. Vincent De Paul Church.

Ralph Paul Baker, retired builder, Cincinnati Milacron inspector
Ralph Paul Baker worked for 35 years at Cincinnati Milacron, where he retired as an inspector.
He built the house his son, Donald, lives in with his own hands. And as his son was growing up, the senior Mr. Baker, along with his father, L.S. Baker, taught him everything he would need to know to become a professional home remodeler.
Now, Donald Baker thanks his father for his home and his grandfather and father for his livelihood.
"He was a good father and a good husband," Donald Baker said of his father. "He was a very nice, gentle man."
Ralph Paul Baker, 86, of Alexandria, Ky., died at 10:20 p.m. Monday at Highlands of Fort Thomas Nursing Home.
He also did some farming and spent a few years as a homebuilder in Northern Kentucky and in Florida. Mr. Baker also was a deacon, a maintenance man and Sunday school supervisor at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Alexandria.
His wife, Mary Baker, preceded him in death.
Other survivors include another son Jerry Baker of Boston, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
