Herschel V. Penry
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Herschel V. Penry, 90, of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, at Southwood Nursing Home.
He was born March 7, 1913, to John J. and Mattie Latham Penry in Prospect, Ohio.
Herschel married Vivian Collings on Feb. 10, 1937, in Reelsville, Ind.
He was a graduate of Prospect High School and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, the U.S. Department of Interior National Park Service in Yellowstone Park as a forest firefighter. His distinguished professional semi-driving career included gasoline tankers with Girton Brothers of Brazil, Ind., during World War II and the DuPont Weapons Depot of Dana, Ind. Herschel retired from the Motor Freight Corp. of Terre Haute in 1970. He was a member of the Teamster Retirees, First Baptist Church and the former Grace United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paul D. "Brick" Penry and one sister, Doris L. Cameron.
Surviving is his wife of 66 years Vivian; two sons and their wives, Jerry L. and Jane Penry and John W. and Sharron Penry all of Terre Haute; a brother, John L. Penry of Marion, Ohio; two sisters, Patricia McPherson of Marion, Ohio, and Bettie Fout of Columbus, Ohio; three grandsons, three granddaughters, five great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Roselawn Funeral Home with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time on Friday at the funeral home.
Norma J. Potts
MARION -- Norma J. Potts, age 54, of Marion, died early Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at home.
She was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Marion, to the late George A. and Mary A. (Fry) Potts.
Survivors include a brother, George P. Potts of Marion; two sisters, Judy (Charles) Morris of Marion, Peggy (Larry) Napper of Marion; two nieces, Carrisa Potts, Miranda Malone; two nephews, Chad and Brett Morris; two great-nephews, Dustin and Christopher Terry and lifelong family friend, Patti Crane.
Norma graduated from Marion Catholic High School in 1967, Marion General Hospital School of Nursing in 1969, and Hocking College with an RN degree in 1988. She worked at Maplewood Nursing Home, Marion Manor, then as an RN at MedCenter and Marion General Hospital until her retirement in 2003.
Friends may call Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004, from 2-5 p.m. at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with parish prayers at 2 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society and American Heart Association.
Irene R. Glass
MARENGO -- Irene R. Glass, age 102, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at her home in Marengo.
Friends may call Sunday 2-5 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 229, Marengo, where services will be held Monday 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Jesse H. James
MARION -- Jesse H. James, age 64, of Marion, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 1, 2004, at his home.
He was born in Marion County on Sept. 3, 1939, to Everett and Beulah (O'Donald) James and had been a self-employed master plumber.
Jesse was preceded in death by his wife, the former Joan Tipton; one son, five bothers and one sister.
Surviving are his son, Robert (Nancy) Tipton of Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Donna) Lindsey of Massillon, Mrs. Edward (Kathy) Hoffman of Marengo and Mrs. Steve (Jean) James-Betz of Montgomery, Ala.; five brothers, Richard (Pat) James, Charles James, Bill (Betty) James, Don (Betty) James and Kenneth (Debbie) James; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and his companion, Nancy Prouty.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Hughes-Allen Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date. Friends may call Saturday from 2 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Quality of Life Hospice.
Wayne L. 'Bud/Truck' Miller
UPPER SANDUSKY -- Wayne L. "Bud/Truck" Miller Sr., 64, Upper Sandusky, passed away at 12:38 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.
Born Feb. 18, 1939, in Marion County, he was the son of the late Dewey and Garnet (Roush) Miller.
On Aug. 6, 1974, he married Arlene Esterline; she died Feb. 24, 1988.
He was a truck driver for Marion Distributing and Treaty Supply. He was a member of Upper Sandusky Moose Lodge 1093.
He is survived by three sons, Wayne L. (Sharon) Miller Jr., Kenton, John Miller, Kenton, Allen Miller, Upper Sandusky; a daughter, Mary (Kenny) Davis, Marion; two stepsons, Chuck (Lee) Esterline, Marion, Craig Esterline, Marion; two brothers, Richard L. (Virginia) Miller, Findlay, Raymond L. (Mary) Miller, Marion; five sisters, Alma (Norm) Lensink, Arkansas, Beverly (David) Shoemaker, Portsmouth, Peggy Miller, Urbana, Kitty Miller, Urbana, Pamela (Michael) Morrell, Sun City, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and also a former wife Sandra Sue Newland. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and William Miller and a sister, Phyllis Miller.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Denzer-Farison-Hottinger Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Raypholpz officiating. Burial is in Marion Cemetery. Friends may call 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart of Ohio Dialysis Center in Marion and/or Wyandot County Hospice.
Pauline 'Polly' L. Newland
Dec. 21, 1933 - Jan. 1, 2004
CHEYBOYGAN, Mich. -- Pauline "Polly" L. Newland, 70 years of age, of Cheboygan, Mich., died Thursday at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Tiro to the late Vernelle Fetter and Frieda (Rossman) Fetter, who survives in Bucyrus.
She was married June 29, 1973, to Ronald J. Newland, who survives.
Also surviving are sons Randy (Pam) Shull of Bucyrus, Michael (Connie) Shull of Oceola, stepdaughter Karen (Keith) Cunningham of Stafford, Va., stepson Dan Newland of Phoenix, Ariz., sisters Bert (Ron) Wenninger of Crossville, Texas and Mary (Bob) Kepford of Galion, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Newland moved to Cheboygan in 1992 from Marion, where she had worked at Whirlpool. She also had served as vice president of the Meeker men's club. While in Cheboygan she had been employed at the Island House Hotel in Mackinaw Island and served as a trustee at the Twin Lakes Association. She enjoyed embroidery and was an avid Ohio State fan.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, Bucyrus with burial in Meeker Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be in the form of contributions to the American Heart Association through the funeral home.
Luella Pearl Pierce
MARION -- Luella Pearl Pierce, age 80, of Marion, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 1, 2004, at Marion General Hospital.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral service or visiting hours. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot at Marion Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled for her family by the Hughes-Allen Funeral Home.
