Mil Staun was featured in 'What's Cooking'

An avid cook and part-time accountant, Mil Staun claimed to have unraveled one of Cincinnati's greatest secrets during her lifetime.

The Sycamore Township woman, by experimenting with various ingredients and cooking methods, believed she had discovered the recipe for Montgomery Inn's rib sauce, her family said.

She died Monday at the age of 83.

Born in Cincinnati, Mrs. Staun maintained a small accounting business to help support her and her mother after her father died. She also remained active at All Saints Church in Montgomery where she participated in the nursing home ministry and helped run a Meals-on-Wheels program.

After her first husband, James G. Farasey, died, Mrs. Staun married her childhood sweetheart, William Staun. Together, the couple had 11 children and would rent out the Airmen's Club at Lunken Airport for their annual Christmas Day dinner.

Mrs. Staun was featured in a 1967 Post column, "What's Cooking in Cincinnati," in which she shared directions for her mock turtle soup and beef tenderloin.

Family members fondly recalled her barbecues. She set her sites on the Montgomery Inn sauce and kept trying different cooking strategies until she replicated it.

"She said it took her a few years, but she finally knocked it off," said Dave Staun, her stepson.

Mrs. Staun leaves her husband, William Staun; a daughter, Mindy Burger; a son, Mike Farasey; four stepdaughters, Marge Ernst, Carol Rizzo, Mary Shinkle and Cynthia Baylis; and five stepsons, Mike Staun, Robert Staun, Paul Staun, David Staun and Bill Staun.

Services begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, All Saints Church, Montgomery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home, Kenwood.

Memorials may be directed to Catholics United for Poor, P.O. Box 14548, Cincinnati 45250-0548 or to Mercy League Nativity Church, 5138 Ridge Road, Cincinnati 45213.
