Paul Huenefeld, designed theological school campus

Paul Huenefeld's memory will live on in the buildings and grounds of the Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio, a campus he helped design and build.

As a founding trustee of the school, a position he held from 1958 to 1983, Mr. Huenefeld was appointed chairman of the building committee and led the board through the entire process of design and construction of the campus.

Devoted to his church, he made weekly trips to Delaware to supervise construction "down to the finest detail," said his son, Robert.

In a resolution presented to Mr. Huenefeld in May 1983, the school's board of trustees stated: "He was in many ways personally responsible for the beauty, quality and integrity in the design and construction of all of the buildings."

A Cincinnati native and Hyde Park resident for many years, Mr. Huenefeld died Thursday after a brief illness.

He was 86.

A graduate of Hughes High School, he studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati. He began working at the Huenefeld Co. in 1937 and later became president of that firm and several other family businesses.

In 1967, he bought Rich Ladder Co. in Carrollton, Ky., and Dee Sign Co. in West Chester, with his son.

In the early 1960s, he worked with his father, Walter E., in helping renovate Scarlet Oaks Manor, part of Bethesda Hospital.

He also was a trustee of Bethesda Hospital Inc. from 1946 to 1972, serving as treasurer from 1959 to 1967.

Mr. Huenefeld also served as a member of Fifth Third Bank Corp.'s board of directors from 1963 to 1985.

He was a lifelong member of Hyde Park Bethlehem United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, served as a trustee and chaired many committees including the investment committee and building committee.

Also, he was a member of the Cincinnati Country Club and the Queen City Club.

Mrs. Spaeth followed both her husband and son on the championship circuit. She declines to say who was better.

"Gary was the best in banks and Joey was the best in pockets," she said. "Joey was so very proud of Gary and Gary always said that his father taught him so much.

"Gary made a lot of money in pool tournaments and had a whole lot of trophies.

"One time, Gary was going to play in a big tournament and someone asked Joey if he was going to attend to see how his son played. 'No, I don't have to,' replied Joey. 'I know how he plays.' "
