Edward Bailey Sr., band leader
Edward Bailey Sr., band leader, former sheriff, church organist and consummate salesman, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, Ky. He was 70.
"He was a jack of all trades," said his son, Walter Bailey of Covington. "If he wanted to do something, he read a book. And it usually turned out pretty good."
Mr. Bailey married when he was 15. "He and mom built their first home from scratch in Latonia Lakes, and it's still standing," said Walter Bailey.
"He would try anything. He always worked for himself."
In the early 1950s, he bought a panel truck and created his own doughnut delivery route. He played piano at Walt's Hitching Post and Nick's Grove restaurants.
In the mid 1950s, he moved the family to Florida, where he ran a shrimp boat, started an electroplating business and became a linen and towel supplier for hotels. "He'd get a roll of linens and we'd cut it in the back yard and mom would sew the towels," Walter Bailey said.
They returned to Northern Kentucky in the 1960s and he started a concrete business, sold insurance and joined the musicians union and started playing in Holiday Inns in several states. He owned rental property and had his own woodworking shop. "He made dog and cat caskets for a vet in Las Vegas," his son said.
He and his first wife divorced. He married Ruth Hounts in 1990.
He was a member of Latonia Christian Church, Covington FOP, Latonia Gun Club and was a Ham radio operator.

Bailey Jr. of Rabbit Hash and Aaron Bailey of Covington; a daughter, Scarlett Dane of Elsmere; brothers, David Bailey of Eustis, Fla., and Christopher Bailey of Orlando, Fla.; a stepson, Howard Law of Cold Spring; a stepdaughter, Barbara Rauh of Oregonia, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
