Jean Strasser, Post columnist
The first woman to be named managing editor of the student newspaper at the University of Cincinnati would have a brief but colorful career in journalism, writing a column for The Post and hosting radio programs for WCPO and WSAI.
Jean Hennegan Strasser's column, "Jean About Town," began with UC's newspaper -- then known as the News and Bearcat -- and in 1933 she began writing it for The Post. The young co-ed would attend events all over the city, from City Hall to Crosley Field to Coney Island, entertaining readers with her enthusiasm and wit.
Mrs. Strasser, 92, died Thursday at her home in Mount Lookout.
After writing for The Post and, later, the Cincinnati Enquirer, Mrs. Strasser tried her hand at radio, first hosting a shopping tips program on WCPO, then a frequently-running skit on WSAI with the intriguing title "How to Keep Ahead of Your Husband."
She would retire her press card after marrying her college sweetheart, Elmer Strasser, and having seven children. But she continued to find an outlet for her creative talent by writing skits for "Hits and Misses," a variety show at Christ the King Church in Mount Lookout.
Her father and uncle, James Hennegan and John Hennegan, founded the Hennegan Printing Co. in Cincinnati in 1886. Mrs. Strasser also founded her own business, a gift shop called The Gilt Edge in Mount Lookout, from 1966 to 1976.
Mrs. Strasser graduated from Summit Country Day School and the University of Cincinnati. In addition to serving as managing editor of the student newspaper, she served as chapter and national president of Theta Phi Alpha sorority, and was a member of the Fresh Painters, an acting guild.
She was a woman ahead of her time, said her daughter, Mary Strasser of Mount Lookout.
"She was an only child, and her parents treated her like she was another adult," Mary Strasser said. "She had such confidence and spirit. Even in the toughest of times, you could turn to her.
"She was a loving, generous mother. She had her hands full with seven children, but she connected with each of us in a special way. She knew how to make each of us happy," her daughter said.
Her husband of 55 years, Elmer Strasser, died six years ago.
Other survivors include two other daughters, Judith Bohmfalk of Sanibel, Fla., and Jane Washburn of San Francisco; four sons, James Strasser of Hyde Park, Dr. Michael Strasser of Prescott, Ariz., Paul Strasser of Dillsboro, Ind., and Peter Strasser of Batavia; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rohde Funeral Home, Mount Lookout, with a Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Church, Mount Lookout. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Wolf Sanctuary, P.O. Box 235, Dillsboro, Ind. 47018.
