James Griffith, protected four presidents
James H. Griffith, a former Secret Service agent who protected four presidents, died Wednesday.
He was 89.
He joined the Secret Service in 1942, just after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and guarded President Franklin Roosevelt at the White House and on numerous trips overseas, including Tehran, Cairo, and the historic Yalta talks between Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin.
Mr. Griffith then served Harry Truman and investigated the assassination attempt by Puerto Rican nationalists at Blair House in 1951. He also protected Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, as well as two vice presidents who went on to become president, Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson.
In November 1963, the same month Kennedy was assassinated and Johnson was elevated to president, Mr. Griffith was appointed to head the Cincinnati Field Office of the Secret Service where he served until his retirement.
He appeared in Jim Bishop's book, "FDR's Last Year," the History Channel A&E documentary "The Secret Service" and was interviewed for an upcoming PBS production on FDR at Yalta.
After his retirement, he founded Continental Polygraph Service in 1975.
The Anderson Township resident suffered a stroke the day after the terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon and had been in failing health since.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Hills United Methodist Church, 7515 Forest Road. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home, 2050 Beechmont Ave., Mount Washington .

Kathleen Beck, Batesville leader
Kathleen "Kitsy" Beck let her voice be heard through radio, newspapers and the arts in Batesville, Ind. She died Sunday at age 76.
She founded and directed several plays for the Batesville Actor's Theater, was one of the first news directors of WRBI radio and wrote a newspaper column for the Herald Tribune in Batesville.
Ms. Beck also was active in Republican politics, serving as vice chairman of the Ripley County GOP and president of the Republican Women's Club.
In addition to her public worker, she served as a counselor to addicted persons and their families at Serenity Hall in Batesville.
In 1989, Gov. Robert Orr presented to her the Sagamore of the Wabash.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Rescue 10 or the American Cancer Society.

Sister Ann Louis Niermann, teacher, principal
Sister Ann Louis Niermann OSU taught at various schools in Cincinnati and Dayton. She also was principal at several of them.
Sister Niermann, of Walnut Hills, died Sunday. She was 99.
An Ursuline sister for 77 years, she had taught at St. Ursula Academy, St. Francis de Sales, Holy Name, St. Monica, All Saints, St. Stephen, Resurrection elementary schools in Cincinnati and St. Henry in Dayton, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Ursula Academy, 1339 E. McMillan St., Walnut Hills. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the school's chapel.

Paula Roseman, aided law firm
Paula Roseman, a receptionist whom colleagues called the "nerve center" of the downtown law firm of Manley, Burke and Lipton, died March 26 after a long battle with cancer. She was 51.
Confined to a wheelchair in October, she still joined two dozen friends and co-workers in a "Making Strides of Breast Cancer" fund-raiser.
"She never complained, she was always cheerful, and she was able to keep track of our lawyers who were often scattered around the state and the nation working on cases," said Robert E. Manley, firm chairman.
Survivors include her husband, Darryl; a daughter, Anita Harris; two brothers, Phillip Haley and Roy Haley; and three grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Thompson Hall and Jordan Funeral Home, Forest Park. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery.

James Cucinotta, home builder
James A. Cucinotta believed in - and lived - the American dream.
A successful home builder, he saw the single-family home as the symbol of the American dream, his family said. Mr. Cucinotta, of Kenwood, died Wednesday. He was 71.
Born the son of immigrants from Sicily, he was president of his senior class at Purcell High School and an All-City baseball player who went to the University of Cincinnati on a baseball scholarship.
He served with the Army during the
Korean War, then came home to begin a career in home construction.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Rita; daughters, Diane, Cris, Jami and Ann Cucinotta, Cadi Kelly and Tina Colbert; and two granddaughters.
Mass of Christian Burial is 1 p.m. today at St. Gertrude Parish, 7630 Shawnee Run Road, Madeira. Memorials may be made to the church building fund. Gilligan Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Betty Jane Ahrens, philanthropist
Services were Saturday for philanthropist and community leader Betty Jane Ahrens.
A lifelong Hyde Park resident, she was on the board of directors of Media Group International and the Cincinnati Park Board Foundation.
Mrs. Ahrens also volunteered as a reading tutor, enjoyed traveling, loved dogs and cats, flowers and gardening, and helped out at the Krohn Conservatory, but her happiest years were "at home raising my children."
She worked at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Survivors include her sons, Dr. Edwin Ahrens of Prospect, Ky., and Richard E. Ahrens of Eugene, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Edwin B.
Memorials may be made to the Cincinnati Nature Center or to Krohn Conservatory.
