Annie Hanna, storyteller, widow of Scripps exec
Annie Lou Guidry Hanna, widow of former E.W. Scripps company news executive Gordon Hanna, died Sunday at Christ Hospital. She was 84.
Mrs. Hanna, a resident of the New England Club in Anderson Township, met her husband in Port Arthur, Texas, where she was involved with a local theater group. Mr. Hanna, a young reporter for the Port Arthur News, was covering the group's latest production.
"Mom always said it was love at first sight," said daughter Harriet Helsley, of San Diego. "He was the light of her life, and no one could make him smile like she did."
During their 54-year marriage, Mrs. Hanna worked tirelessly for charitable, church and civic organizations in the communities where the couple lived. In retirement, they spent their summers in Waynesville, N.C., and the rest of the year in Panama City, Fla.
No matter where they lived, Mrs. Hanna, who was born in Abbeville, La., remained true to her childhood roots. She never lost her Acadian French accent, and her dinner guests frequent dined on Cajun cuisine.
Like her father, she was an extraordinary storyteller.
"Everything reminded her of a joke," said daughter Judy Carruthers of Anderson Township.
Gordon Hanna died in 1995.
In addition to her daughters, Mrs. Hanna leaves five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be private.
The family requests memorial gifts be directed to the Scripps Howard Foundation, 312 Walnut St., Cincinnati, OH 45202, the America Heart Association or a charity of the donor's choice.
