DANIEL PAUL BRADLEY
1939-2007
GROVE, Okla. - Daniel Paul Bradley passed away January 16, 2007, after a 20 year struggle with emphysema. He was born October 23, 1939, in Springfield, Ill. He had one younger brother Michael, who died at the age of 10 months.
Danny grew up in an environment of domestic abuse. He witnessed his mother being beaten many times by his father. Through his first 5 years of life, his mother tried several times to escape the abuse and flee to Wichita, Kan., to her family. Several times he caught them trying to board a bus, and drug them back home. Finally, she managed to get away with Danny and head for family and safety.
Danny grew up in the Wichita area with his mother, maternal grandparents, and relatives. He excelled in sports, mainly wrestling and football. When a young teen, he began living on a farm in Arkansas City during the summer months, and most of his growing up years were spent with his friends in Arkansas City. When the farm chores were finished, he headed to the gravel pit to fish. Fishing was his favorite past time for many years.
During his teen years his Mother re-married. Danny loved Bill Mietchen like the father he never had. He had much respect for Bill and learned all the tricks of fishing from him. He planned to become a forest ranger so he could be outdoors, but then he married his high school sweetheart and that was the end of being a forest ranger.
He graduated from Wichita High School North and attended on year of college at Wichita University. It was during that time that he married Judy Smith on July 31, 1959, and became a father of two--Kerry and Kelly.
His mother died at the age of 43 with leukemia, and Bill died at the age of 39 with a ruptured aorta. Danny’s family now consisted of his wife, 2 children and relatives.
Without a college education and no training, it was hard during the 50’s to make enough money to raise a family, so he began driving a semi-truck for Safeway Stores. For the next 15 years he drove an 18-wheeler all over the mid-west for Luper, McGills and Graves. When he quit driving on the road, he worked for Scott Rice Office Supply in Wichita, assembling office furniture and head of the delivery warehouse. He loved working with wood and for 5 years built custom order office furniture in his off hours.
He hated being gone from home so long from Kerry and Kelly and was determined that they would not have the kind of growing up that he did, and he treasured each time he spent with them. Weekends became the only time they had together as a family. The minute he came home from being on the road all week, he stepped into his pickup w/ camper and headed out for a weekend of camping, fishing and water skiing. Several of the neighborhood kids always went with them. Danny taught two of their friends how to water ski.
People who knew Danny back in the 70’s and 80’s teasingly called him Steve. With his blond hair, blue eyes and long side burns, he looked exactly like Steve McQueen.
In the mid 80’s, Danny discovered he had emphysema, from smoking. At first, he didn’t notice any difference, but the real difficulty to work began in 1990. For a person so very active, he really struggled with it, not once did he ever complain.
Danny and Judy moved to Grove, Oklahoma in 1987. They had purchased a home there three years earlier thinking it would be a good place to retire, and Danny could fish all the time. Unfortunately, loading and unloading the boat by himself became harder and harder due to his health. Judy never could get “the hang” of backing the boat trailer into the water. He began working for the City of Grove in 1989, first with Building and Grounds, but then later transferred to GMSA to be head operator of the Water Treatment Plant.
The fishing poles and lures were put aside for the expensive golf clubs and golf accessories. He played golf almost daily for the first few years until swinging the club became harder and harder. He played everywhere there was a golf course in the area. When he finally was ready to admit his golfing days were about over, he and Judy decided to build a house on Cherokee Grove Golf Course, with their deck overlooking the golf course. At least he could watch the sport he loved so well. His poker buddies took him to Noel, Mo. to play golf when they went. The golf course there would allow him to drive his golf cart up to the ball, instead of keeping it on the cart path. His days of playing become fewer and fewer between, but he never gave up hope that he could keep on playing.
In 2001 it became necessary for him to go on oxygen 24 hours a day. It was a traumatic day, but he commented that “it’s all my own fault. I knew when I was smoking in high school that it was not good for your health.”
He retired from the City of Grove in 2001, and never was bored. In 2003 he embarked on a huge project, building a water garden in his yard. He spent many days and months lining the stream and pond with rocks. He grumbled that it was taking him so long, as most days he could only move 15-20 rocks in place. The finished project was his pride and joy and he spent many hours sitting on the cement bench alongside the pond, or in the glider in the shade overlooking it all, listening to the birds and sounds of the waterfalls.
In 2004 he began building a lay-out for his model HO trains. From that day until his death, he spent many hours each day in the lower level of his home working with his trains.
He is survived by: his wife, Judy; son Kerry Bradley of Grove; daughter Kelly Barnes and husband Noal of Wichita; three grandchildren, Danielle Winegarner, Jessika Gooding, and Alli Barnes; three great-grandchildren, Jerek Winegarner, Karma Winegarner, and great-grandson due in a few weeks; two nieces, uncles, aunts and several cousins.
Danny was a quiet person with a dry sense of humor. He didn’t blend in well with people he didn’t know, and avoided social parties. He was a hard-worker all his life, always concerned about his responsibility to his family. He was never a complainer about his disability, and always said “each day was a great day.”
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 18. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, January 19, both at the Ellis Family Funeral Home Chapel. Services have been entrusted to Ellis Family Funeral Home, Grove.
