Melba Jean Brooks
Melba Jean (Goodin) Brooks, 75, of Maud died Tuesday at her daughter's home in Prague.

She was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Remus, Okla., the daughter of John Wesley and Vaida Florence (Coleman) Goodin.

Brooks lived in the Maud area except for a 30-year period in which she lived in Wichita, Kan. She returned to the Maud area 20 years ago.

She was a sales associate at J.C. Penney's, Shawnee before retiring in 1994.

Brooks was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Maud and the WMU.

She served on the Trinity Baptist Hostess Committee, was a vacation Bible school assistant teacher for many years and was an assistant cook at Falls Creek youth camp.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Donnie L. Goodin and Alvin "Ab" Goodin.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Williams of Prague, Jana Thomas of Tecumseh and Jean Baysinger of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren, Malea Thomas, Deanna Thomas, Kevin Williams, Shawna Thomas, Justin Baysinger, Molly Williams and Matthew Baysinger; three brothers Alton "Bud" Goodin of East Carbon, Utah, Dewey Goodin of Maud and Delbert Goodin of Del City; two sisters, Norma La Farge of Loveland, Ohio, and Sue McCraw of Stillwater; and three great-grandchildren.

A service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Carl Whitfield and the Rev. Wayne Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Cummings Cemetery, Maud.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Shawnee, 1102 W. MacArthur, Shawnee, OK 74804.

Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home.

Lyman W. Pray Sr.
Lyman W. Pray Sr., 61, of Shawnee died Monday at his home.

He retired as a captain from the Del City Fire Department and had served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Pray, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lyman W. and Misty Pray of Shawnee and Paul J.S. and Dawn Pray of Columbia, Mo.; two sons, Albert Arthur Pray of Seattle, Wash., and Kevin L. Pray of Shawnee; a brother, James Pray of Enid; a sister, Elizabeth Pray of Enid; and 14 grandchildren.

A service will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church in Shawnee, with Pastor Kurt Beauford officiating. Burial will be in Canton Cemetery in Canton, Okla., with a committal service at 3:30 p.m.

Arrangements are being handled by Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.

Vernel L. Anglin
Vernel "Vern" L. Anglin, 60, Stroud, died Sunday.

Survivors include a son, Zachery Forest Anglin of Bronson, Mich.; a daughter, Shannon Fawn Anglin of Bronson; his mother, Donna Mae Anglin of Davenport; a brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Pat Anglin of Guthrie; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A service will be 10 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Stroud with the Rev. Burl Mackey officiating. Burial will be in the Davenport Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Parks Brothers Funeral Services.

Lillian Lois Shelton
Wesley, Ark., resident Lillian Lois Shelton died Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the age of 94.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Feb. 24, at Tecumseh Cemetery with Elder Glen Rooker officiating under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark, Ark.

Betty Teas
Oklahoma City resident Betty Teas, 84, died Wednesday, March 7, at The Lakes Assisted Living Center.

A private family graveside service was held Friday, March 8, under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Lorene Stalnaker
Longtime Maud resident Lorene Stalnaker died Monday, March 12, at Seminole Medical Center.

Services are pending with Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home, Maud.

James Timberlake
Shawnee resident Dr. James Timberlake, 87, died Sunday, March 13, at his home.

Burial service with military honors will be 9 a.m. Friday at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Warren McWilliams and the Rev. J.C. Farrand.

Additional information is pending with Walker Funeral Service.

Daniel Keith Newman
Chandler resident Daniel Keith Newman, 72, died Saturday, March 12, at his home near Chandler.

Service was held 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Chandler with the Rev. Rick Blackwell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service.

Vivian Rigby Parris
Tecumseh resident Vivian Rigby Parris, 56, died Friday, March 11, in Shawnee.

She was born March 17, 1948, in San Jose, Calif., to John and Ola (Cates) Merritt. Parris grew up in San Jose, Calif., and moved to Oklahoma in 1974. She has lived in the Shawnee and Tecumseh area since.

In 1963, she married Robert Rigby and they parted as friends in 1990.

Parris was an LPN, and had been employed by Tecumseh Sunset Estates for many years. She was currently exploring a new business venture.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Venes Mulllins.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lois Rigby of Tecumseh; daughter and son-in-law, Cheri and Mickey Smith of Earlsboro; mother, Ola Merritt Sandovel of Macomb; brother and sister-in-law, John L. "J.L." and Shirley Merritt of Macomb; four grandchildren, Leslie (Rigby) Lewelling, Jami Smith, Keith Rigby and Bailey Smith; great-grandchild and numerous friends and other family members, including Brad and Gabby Merritt, Brian Merritt and Bradford Jr. and Blake Merritt.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Todd Tiffin officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery.

Doyle E. Smith
Doyle E. Smith, 88, longtime owner and operator of Doyle's Service Station, died Monday, March 14, in Shawnee.

Service is pending and will be announced by Gaskill Funeral Chapel.

Tecumseh resident Sherry L. Burns, 42, died Saturday in Missouri.

Service is pending and will be announced by Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Helen Louise Pritchett
Shawnee resident Helen Louise (Zurmehly) Pritchett, 87, died Wednesday, March 14, in a local hospital.

She was born Dec. 13, 1919 to Clyde and Cleta Marie (Rehm) Zurmehly in Lima, Ohio.

She moved to Shawnee in 1927 and attended Jefferson Elementary through the 6th grade and the 7th at Woodrow Wilson. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1937. She attended Oklahoma A & M College, now Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1941, majoring in Elementary Education.

On January 25, 1942, she married Newton Pritchett, her college sweetheart. When he entered the service in World War II and left for the Pacific, Helen worked for the Will Roy Jones Insurance and Real Estate Office in Shawnee until the war ended.

She taught several grades in Shawnee schools retiring in 1981 at Wilson. She was a member of the Junior Mothers Club, Sustaining member of the Junior Service League and was a past-president, and served as a volunteer at Mabee-Gerrer Museum for 20 years. She had been a member of Wesley United Methodist Church since 1927. She taught in the children's division for many years and was active in United Methodist Women. She was an active member of A.A.R.P. and a member of the Monday Book Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Newton, and a brother, Carl, who died in infancy.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Alison of Shawnee; grandson and wife, Travis and Lina Pritchett of College Station, Texas; a granddaughter and husband, Tara and Ruben Rocha and great granddaughter, Kasiana Rocha, of Sugarland, Texas; two brothers and wives, Charles and Jo Zurmehly of Shawnee, Clyde and Jean Zurmehly of Norman; nieces and nephews, Charles Zurmehly wife, Randy, and family, Donna Sidmore and family, Cathy and Ronald Boggs and family, Clyde III, Gina ,Chuck and family.

The family will greet visitors at the funeral home today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kris Steele and the Rev. Jeff Burress officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Eloise Jamae McMurtrey
Former Shawnee resident Eloise Jamae (Cooper) McMurtrey, currently of Duncan, died Wednesday, March 14, at the age of 77.

Eloise was born on Jan. 29, 1930 in Frederick, Okla., the daughter of Alexander G. and Esther I. (May) Cooper. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1948.

In Duncan, she worked as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. William Edwards, until her retirement.

Eloise was a member of DAR, DAC, the Mayflower Society, the Prairie House and First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Susan E. and David Fielder of Oxford, Georgia; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe W. and Connie McMurtrey of Minco, Okla.; two sisters, Elaine Ellis of Shawnee and Marge Wilson of Oklahoma City; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Cooper of Duncan and Betty Cooper of Perryton, Texas; four grandsons, P.T. McMurtrey and his wife Leah, Brett Fielder and his wife Jamie, Michael Fielder and Luke McMurtrey and one great-grandson, Reed Thomas McMurtrey and numerous neices and nephews.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phil Ware officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee with the Rev. George Lupton officiating.

Don Grantham Funeral Home, Duncan, is directing arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Brett Fielder, Michael Fielder, Luke McMurtrey, P.T. McMurtrey, David Fielder and Joe McMurtrey.
