ARVEL JONES

HOOKER, Okla. -- Arvel Jones, 90, Hooker, Okla., passed away Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Home in Liberal, Kansas.

Arvel was born Oct. 27, 1909, in Haviland, Kans., to S.S. and Avanah Jones. In 1914, his family moved to Hooker and settled on a homestead one mile east of Hooker. Arvel graduated from Hooker High School in 1929 as valedictorian of his class, and the next Monday began work at the First National Bank of Hooker.

In 1934 he married his high school sweetheart, Velma Dobbs, and they made their home in Hooker. During World War II, Arvel served in the U.S. Navy and was involved in five European invasions, including North Africa, Salerno, Anzio, Palermo and Normandy.

Arvel and Velma had two children, Anna ArVel and John Arthur. Velma died in 1964 and in 1969 he married Martha St. Clair.

Arvel for many years was in partnership with Elmer Hollman in insurance, farming and cattle. He continued working at the First National Bank where he rose from janitor to president and was named president emeritus. He continued there until January, 1999, and had many long-time customers and friends with whom he enjoyed visiting. He often joked that if he tried really hard, maybe he could "get on steady" at the bank. During his tenure there, the bank was held up twice, built a new facility and installed computers, but when Arvel wrote out a loan, it was always on his manual typewriter with his two forefingers. Scrupulously honest and forthright, Arvel was a man of few words. The bank honored him on several occasions for his longevity and he was also honored by the Oklahoma Banker's Association.

Until his memory began to fail the last few years, Arvel was an encyclopedia for information about local history and people and was a most valuable resource to ArVel in the writing of three local history books. He never forgot a name, how it was spelled or how folks were related.

Arvel loved the land and driving around to look at the crops. He was a bundle of nerves until his faithful friend, Ernest Herald, got the wheat into the elevator, but he also knew Ernest gave his very best care to Arvel's farming concerns.

He was a regular sight at First Baptist Church, where for years he served as usher and trustee. Recently he was named as trustee Emeritus. He served the local American Legion for 43 years as financial officer and was long-time treasurer for the Lions Club, of which he was a charter member. Until the last few years he managed the ticket sales and money receipts at the local Lions Club carnival and once he even embarrassed his children by appearing as an end man in the local Lions Minstrel Show. ArVel remembers being mortified that he would forget his jokes, but they were securely placed inside his top hat which he would consult each time he came to the mike.

He thoroughly enjoyed his family as it expanded to include stepchildren, children-in-law and grandchildren, and his favorite times were when they would all gather around the piano and play and sing his old favorite songs. He especially enjoyed barbershop harmony and loved to hear the Chords of Joy sing.

Arvel was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, in addition to American Legion and Lions Club.

He loved Hooker and its people and could hardly be persuaded to leave town at all once he returned from the war.

Arvel was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Johnny and Floyd Jones; and his first wife, Velma.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Jones, of the home; daughter ArVel White of Hooker; son, John Jones and his wife Janie of Houston, Texas; three step-daughters, Susan Thomson and husband Jim of Dallas, Texas, Drue Washburn and her husband Kirk of Alva, Okla., and Debbie St. Clair of Hooker; 10 grandchildren, Ed and Gina White of Oklahoma City, Okla., Wes and Shanna Jones of Austin, Texas, Sean and Jennifer White of Moss Bluff, La., Kerri Jones Gupta and her husband, Jason, of Dallas, Texas, Kami Washburn of Medford and Cory Washburn of Stillwater, Okla., Dane and Chris Thomson of Dallas, Texas and Samantha Thomson of Dallas, Texas and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the First Baptist Church in Hooker, Okla., with Brother Ron Mimms officiating. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery directed by the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home in Hooker.

Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church-Building Fund or the Hooker Swimming Pool Fund and may be left at the Roberts Brothers Funeral Home, Box 745, Hooker, Okla. 73945.
