Ina Mae Shankland was born in El Reno, OK on September 16, 1911. When her family moved to Arapaho, OK she met Ivy R. Brown. They married in 1933 and had two daughters, Jenifer Jean and Nancy Lee. They lived in Clinton where Ina worked as the assistant to the administrator of the hospital. She was active in the Presbyterian Church there. Ina always enjoyed nature and became very interested in birds; in fact it was her lifelong hobby. Luckily, two of her friends in Clinton became interested too, so there was always someone to make a trip out in the country with to see what they could find.

In 1956, Ina and Ivy moved to Elk City, OK where Ina again worked at the hospital, was involved in the church and continued her passionate interest in birds. For many years, she wrote a weekly column about the birds in western Oklahoma for the Elk City newspaper. It is only natural that her interest in ornithology would expand to include other areas of nature. A friend of hers tell the story of being in the car with Ina when suddenly Ina stopped her car at an intersection, got out and roundly scolded a young man in the truck ahead of them for throwing his lunch out the window. She would drive a lot of miles out into the country or across town to help someone identify a "strange" bird.

Ivy died in 1970. In 1988, Ina married Dr. Albert M. Mery of Bartelsville, OK and they came to Altus to make their home. Happily, her new husband is interested in all sorts of wildlife too. Ina's daughter, Jenifer lives in Altus with her husband Glen Briggs. Jenifer gave Ina three grandsons, Mark and Todd Connally of San Antonio, TX and Shaun Connally of Oklahoma City, OK. She has a great grandson, Ian Connally of Perry, OK. Her daughter Nancy and husband Jap Blakenship live in Oklahoma City and provided Ina with a granddaughter, Lisa Connery of Norman, OK. Lisa and Steve have four children which Ina and Max enjoy, Sara, Andrew, Matt and Hannah.

The family requests that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Altus at 208 E. Cypress, Altus, OK, 73521.
