Carolyn Lou George passed from this life into the arms of her Heavenly Father on July 14, 2013 at the local Hospital with her Husband at her side. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 20th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Craddock Memorial Chapel with Dr. Douglas R. Miller officiating.
Carolyn was born on June 13, 1942 as the 5th of 8 children to Robert Russell (Taliaferro) Salthouse and Lorene Rushing Salthouse at Ardmore, OK. She was raised in the Ardmore, Healdton and Fox area until the family moved to Houston, TX, in the mid 1950’s where she eventually met and married the Love of Her Life, Fred D. George, on June 22, 1960. They moved back to Ardmore in 1982, with their children, to be closer to her family.
Carolyn was a very creative person who loved to do arts and crafts projects as well as decorate her home. She was a giving person, always giving to and doing thing for others. She loved to have parties and family gatherings, to celebrate holidays and birthdays, of which there were 13 in June alone. As her eyesight and health started to decline the crafting and cooking for the occasions slowed dramatically.
Fred realized that their retirement plans for traveling the country could not wait until retirement. So, for the last ten years they used all of Fred’s vacations to see our beautiful country including Alaska, Hawaii and some of Canada.
Carolyn dearly loved children and worked in day care for her Churches’ and Daycare centers, both in Houston, TX and in Ardmore, OK, at First Christian Church, Ardmore Day Nursery and others. She also cared for all of her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren until her vision and health would not permit it anymore. She was not a babysitter per-se but a Teacher, always teaching children to read, to have manners, to get along with others and have fun while doing so.
She took classes to learn to be a Day Care Director and was close to being certified when she stopped to care for her grandbabies at home.
She had a passion for the Christmas season and the Birth of our Savior. She loved decorating the house inside and out to celebrate, sometimes putting a tree up in every room; with lighted garlands around doors and windows. She kept Fred busy at those times, but it was a labor of love.
One of her greatest joys was playing Mrs. Claus for over 37 years, in a dress, apron, and bonnet that she designed and made herself. With Fred as Santa they entertained thousands of children at Daycare’s, Schools, Churches, Nursing Homes and Southern Oklahoma Children’s Christmas Parades until her health forced her to retire from it.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Bobby, Jerry and Merle, her sisters, Sue Smith of Vian, OK; Patty Tarwater of Oklahoma City, OK; and a beloved granddaughter, Naomi George of Ardmore, OK.
She leaves to cherish her memory: Her loving husband Fred, her loving children, Edward, Bryan, Tony, Terri George and husband Emmet Loughridge, Grandchildren, Rachael Green and husband Casey, Patrick Loughridge and spouse Shannon, Vinny George, Step Grandson, Dillon Vantine, Kaitlin and Katrina George, Great-Grandchildren, Kirra Gooden, Davion Green and Jackson Loughridge and step-great-granddaughter August all of Ardmore. Brothers, Bill Salthouse and Wife LaQuita of Ardmore, OK; Tommy Salthouse of CA and a host of Nieces, Nephews, and Great-Nieces and Nephews. Dear Friends, Shirley McLeroy, Jean Bass and Husband Tommy, Sisters-in-Law, Barbara Salthouse, Rosalie Tharp, Janice Schroeder.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be sons, grandsons, son-in-law; Emmett Loughridge, brothers-in–law; Bob Tharp, Winston Schroeder, good friend Tommy Bass and our dear friend Joe McLeroy whom is in Heaven.
The family request no flowers. In lieu please make donations to the Oklahoma Tornado Relief Fund, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Relief Fund, or the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
