Ralph Colbert

Shawnee resident Ralph Colbert died Friday at his home. He was 54.

Colbert was born Dec. 4, 1945, in Simpson, to Raymond J. and Geneva L. (Keel) Colbert.

He graduated from Star Spencer High School in Oklahoma City.

He worked at the Shawnee Milling Co. for 10 years. He previously worked as a driller in the Oklahoma oil fields and as a security guard.

Colbert served with the U.S. Navy for two years.

He was a union member, and had lived in Shawnee for 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Hershel Colbert.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Willie Williams, Wewoka; Lora and Guy Wantland, Glenwood, N.M.; a son, Kenny Colbert, Rimrock, Ariz.; and 10 grandchildren, Amber Williams, Shelby Williams, Carly Williams, Colton Colbert, Kade Colbert, Koby Colbert, Taryn Colbert, Kendra Colbert, Ty Wantland and Bryce Wantland.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lone Cedar Cemetery in Mansville with the Rev. Roy Robertson Jr. officiating. Services are under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel in Shawnee.

Katrine Bradshaw Abernathy

Katrine Bradshaw Abernathy, Shawnee, died Friday at her home. She was 91.

Mrs. Abernathy was born March 10, 1909, in Crown King, Ariz.

She graduated from Oklahoma A&M, earning a degree in home economics.

She worked for the home service division of OG&E in Shawnee.

She married Kenneth Abernathy on Dec. 22, 1937. The couple made their home in Shawnee.

Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught in the junior department and served as president of the Women's Association.

She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Hawthorne Club, and served as president of both organizations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Abernathy; and her parents.

Survivors include her brother-in-law, George C. Abernathy Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.; a niece, Carri Abernathy Bell, Oklahoma City; and a nephew, Jack H. Abernathy Jr., Rockwall, Texas.

Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Shawnee or a charity of choice.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Max Shumake officiating. Private burial was held at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.

Anne Katherine Abernathy

Shawnee resident Anne Katherine Abernathy died Friday at her home. She was 57.

Ms. Abernathy was born April 24, 1943, the daughter of Kenneth and Katrine Abernathy.

She graduated from Shawnee High School and the University of Oklahoma.

At OU, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and was named Outstanding Woman Student and outstanding member of her sorority as a senior.

She previously lived in Houston, Texas, and was a member of the Junior League of Houston, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Ms. Abernathy had moved to Shawnee to care for her mother, Katrine Abernathy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Katrine Abernathy; and her grandparents, George C. and Carrie Howell Abernathy.

Survivors include her uncle, George C. Abernathy Jr.; and six cousins, Carri Abernathy Bell, Jack H. Abernathy Jr., Helen Abernathy Rollins, Ruth Abernathy Peksens, Gail Abernathy Middleton and Ann Abernathy Ransdell.

Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Shawnee or a charity of choice.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Max Shumake officiating. Private burial was held at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel, Shawnee.

Paulyne E. Criswell

Paulyne E. Criswell died July 22 in Stillwater at the age of 85.

She was born Aug. 22, 1914, to Hugh D. and Eva Lora (Hill) North. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Little and was a homemaker. She married J.T. Criswell on March 26, 1938 in Seminole. He preceded her in death.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Betty Ann Jernigan, sister; and Gene and Ray North, brothers.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Nancy Criswell of Post Falls, Idaho, Paul and Sharon Criswell of Wautoma, Wis., Ted and Opal Criswell of Seminole and Jim and Angela Criswell of Stillwater; one sister-in-law, Earlene North of Seminole; one brother-in-law, John Jernigan of Bedford, Texas; six grandsons; three granddaughters, two step-granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Little. Rusty Dawson will officiate under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home of Prague. Burial will be in the Prague Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Church of Christ at Little.

Gladys E. McCray Short

Gladys E. McCray Short of Oklahoma City died Saturday at an Oklahoma City nursing center. She was 94.

She was born April 2, 1906, in Decatur, Ala., the daughter of Homer Watson and Elsie (Smith) Watson.

She was a longtime resident of Chickasha and Seminole before moving to Midwest City in 1994. Her first husband, Vernon McRay, preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1961. Her second husband, Robert Short, preceded her in death on Feb. 29, 1984.

Mrs. Short was a homemaker. She was a member of the Tracy Rebekah Lodge and Amerado Club.

While in Seminole she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; in Midwest City she was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and brother, Doyal C. Watson.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Connely and Lou McCray of Oklahoma City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Bill Eggleston of Oklahoma City, Loleet and Steve Venezia of Fairfield, Conn., and Qureatha and Bill Frye, Summerfield, N.C.; three brothers, Col. Clay O. and Margaret Collier of Bastrop, Texas, E. Charles Collier of Seminole and Raymond Collier of Chickasha; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon E. Charles Collier officiating.

Burial will be at Little Cemetery, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.

Vineta Leone O'Brien

Vineta Leone O'Brien died July 23 at the Rollings Hills Care Center of Catoosa. She was 86.

She was born on Feb. 8, 1914, to Thomas and Rose May (Chidester) Zuck. She married Cornelius "Whitey" O'Brien on July 8, 1935.

Mrs. O'Brien worked as an upholster. She also cared for Dr. Bob Roulston's property in Maud.

She was a member of the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Maud.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and Rhobena Morgan, sister.

Survivors include three sisters, Faye Smith of Cherryville, Kan., Pearl Whitsman of Tulsa and Norma Moore of Broken Arrow, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Cummings Cemetery of Maud with the Rev. Basil Keenan, O.S.B., officiating under the direction of Knight Funeral Home.

Lydia M. (Slape) Miles

Lydia M. (Slape) Miles died Saturday at Shawnee Regional Hospital at the age of 98.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1902, to C.E. and Alice Georgia (Wheeler) Slape.

She married Claude D. Miles in 1944 and worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II.

She later owned a restaurant.

She was also a member of the East Oak Church of God in Maud.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; Dalton and Marion Slape, brothers; Bessie White and Mae Armstrong, sisters; May Slape, sister-in-law; Jeff Bise, great-grandson; Mircale Lynn Jennings, great-great-granddaughter; and Ted Archer, son-in-law.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Georgia and Preston Abbott of Shawnee and Bertha Archer of Shawnee, five grandchildren, Lavon Sanders, Joyce Smith, Marylea Bise, David Abbott and Shirley Jennings, 11 great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren and four great-great-great grandchildren.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the East Oak Church of God in Maud with the Rev. Sidney Freeman officiating under the direction of Knight Funeral Home with burial in the Cummings Cemetery in Maud.

Ethel Larena Anderson Hamilton

Shawnee resident Ethel Larena Anderson Hamilton died Monday at Rose Manor Nursing Home. She was 95.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
