Circus owner dies, service planned

HUGO, Okla. - Doris Richard Miller, owner of the Hugo-based Carson & Barnes 5-Ring Circus, died as he had lived since age 7 Ñ on the road with the big top spread.

Miller, who was known as D.R., died in McCook, Neb., on Wednesday at age 83. He had rejoined the circus on the road last week to celebrate the first birthday of an Asian elephant born in the circus' breeding program.

Miller will be buried in November in a service that at his own request 'will be the biggest thing that ever happened to Hugo,' said Trey Key, general agent for the Hugo-based Kelly-Miller Circus, which Miller co-owned and helped found.

'He had left instructions if he died during the season that he would be buried when the show got in,' Key said.

A private memorial service will be held between circus shows at a stop in Littleton, Colo., on Saturday.

Miller started his circus 62 years ago and built it into the nation's largest tented show, Key said. In recent years, he spent more time at that show's winter stop in Hugo but occasionally joined the circus on the road and traveled for weeks.

He loved elephants and owned 36 of them. The circus has an elephant breeding farm in Texas that Miller had planned to move to Hugo.

Circus people worldwide got their start in the Carson & Barnes show, which features elephants, horses, clowns and high-flying trapeze acts, Key said. He fielded calls Thursday from around the nation as news of Miller's death spread in the circus world.

'He loved the circus,' said Key, who had known Miller for about seven years. 'He was like a kid watching the show. He bought everybody Cokes, he bought everybody peanuts. He applauded and laughed and commented on the acts.'

Miller died between shows in Nebraska. Earlier in the day, he had gone to the hospital after complaining of chest pains, Key said.

No problems were found and he returned to his motor home to rest. He collapsed and died around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Miller married his wife, Isla, in 1934, and they immediately hit the road as part of a dog and pony show owned by his father, Obert. They did a tight wire and trapeze act. Both were later inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame.

Miller moved his circus base to Hugo from Mena, Ark., in 1941.

His body will be placed in storage until the burial in November in Showman's Rest, a portion of the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo reserved for circus performers.

Mrs. Miller, who died less than a year ago, also is buried there.

Miller is survived by his daughter, Barbara Miller Byrd and son-in-law Geary Byrd, who manage the circus. He has two granddaughters, Kristin Parra and Traci Cavallini, who also travel with the show.

Miller had long described wanting a funeral procession with an elephant- or horse-drawn carriage and circus music 'every step of the way to the cemetery,' Key said. He expects November's service will meet the showman's expectations.

'He always wanted big, big, big shows,' he said.
